  • Semi-Confusing Information Systems Revisited: The Role of Inefficiencies in the Enactment of Ambidexterity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 47, s. 452-475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forty years ago, Bo Hedberg and Sten Jönsson proposed the notion of semi-confusing information systems as a desired state for organizations operating in dynamic environments. Core to the idea was that mere efficiency is not enough for long-term success, but that organizations also require a certain amount of inefficiency. These ideas resonate within the growing literature on organizational ambidexterity, in which the dynamic balancing of exploration and exploitation is deemed a prerequisite for long-term performance. This study utilizes the design characteristics of semi-confusing information systems as a lens for secondary analysis of a case of new product development in a global, automotive organization. The findings show that inefficiencies in the new product development process correspond to the proposed design characteristics of semi-confusing information systems, opening up for a new take on the role of inefficiencies in the enactment of ambidexterity. The identified inefficiencies are manifested in unsanctioned repertoires which result in increased variety. In addition, the level of compliance with semi-confusing information systems characteristics is found to impact both the ambidextrous balance and the decentralization of the enactment of ambidexterity.

  • Sharing and the disintegration of value creation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 32nd EGOS Colloquium, Naples, Italy. July 7–9, 2016..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Sharing Economy has predominantly been described as something inherently good and tightly coupled with new patterns of consumption rather than production. In this respect, there has been an empirical bias that involves not studying incumbent industrial actors’ adoption of sharing mechanisms as a means for externalized operations. This paper explores how incumbent technology firms utilize sharing economy mechanisms in their pursuit of growth-related advantage. In addition to this, the paper discusses the implications that the adoption of sharing economy mechanisms may have for both business and society. According to the findings, firms display a disintegration of value creation practice through the utilization of sharing economy mechanisms, which in turn may threaten the basis for market formalism through the increased reliance of service bartering as a mechanism of production. Albeit currently a marginal phenomenon, we expect continued adoption of sharing economy mechanisms by incumbent actors to produce new challenges for the society.

  • THE INTERNAL VALUE OF IS: INTEGRATING A VALUE CREATION PERSPECTIVE INTO IT GOVERNANCE
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 24th European Conference on Information Systems. June 11-15 2016, Istanbul..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Information Systems (IS) function has long been acknowledged as a key resource for the organi-zation. Despite this, the dominant paradigm within the governance of said function has been one of efficiency, economies of scale and cost control rather than flexibility, economies of scope and revenue enhancement. This paper explores how a value perspective from management accounting can be ap-plied to the internal IT delivery in a global vehicle-manufacturing firm. Through an action design study, the findings show that the value perspective brings with it several insights on how the internal value of IS could be manifested and inform IT Governance. The findings are discussed in relation to existing streams of research within IS, and with this being research in progress, the paper outlines insights into how to evaluate the applied model.

  • Toward a new Theory of the Firm: Warrant, Design and Proposal
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Blockchain Technology & Organizations Research Symposium at the University of Connecticut.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper, we posit that blockchain technology and its application challenge the foundations of existing theories of the firm. Utilizing transaction cost economics as a point of reference, we explore how said theory grows obsolete with increasing blockchain adoption and how new theory is needed. At the core of our argument lies the diminution of transaction costs and its effect on the principles of scarcity, boundaries, motivation, size and returns. The paper identifies propositions where blockchain challenges the prevailing theory of the firm. These propositions are used as design criteria for future research agenda intended to contribute toward a new theory of the firm. Four design experiments utilizing application of blockchain are presented as a suggestion for future research.
