  • EU FP7 INFSO-ICT-317669 METIS, D3.1 Positioning of multi-node/multi-antenna technologies
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This document describes the research activity in multi-node/multi-antenna technologies within METIS and positions it with respect to the state-of-the-art in the academic literature and in the standardization bodies. Based on the state-of-the-art and as well as on the METIS objectives,we set the research objectives and we group the different activities (or technology components) into research clusters with similar research objectives. The technologycomponents and the research objectives have been set to achieve an ambidextrous purpose. On one side we aim at providing the METIS system with those technological components that are a natural but non-trivial evolution of 4G. On the other side, we aim at seeking for disruptivetechnologies that could radically change 5G with respect to 4G. Moreover, we mapped the different technology components to METIS’ other activities and to the overall goals of theproject.

  • EU FP7 INFSO-ICT-317669 METIS, D3.2 First performance results for multi-node/multi-antenna transmission technologies
  • 2014
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This deliverable describes the current results of the multi-node/multi-antenna technologies investigated within METIS and analyses the interactions within and outside Work Package 3. Furthermore, it identifies the most promising technologies based on the current state of obtained results. This document provides a brief overview of the results in its first part. The second part, namely the Appendix, further details the results, describes the simulation alignment efforts conducted in the Work Package and the interaction of the Test Cases. The results described here show that the investigations conducted in Work Package 3 are maturing resulting in valuable innovative solutions for future 5G systems.

  • On the Latency-Energy Performance of NB-IoT Systems in Providing Wide-Area IoT Connectivity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking. - 2473-2400.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Narrowband Internet-of-Things (NB-IoT) offers a significant link budget improvement in comparison with the legacy networks by introducing different coverage classes, allowing repeated transmissions, and tuning the repetition order based on the path-loss in communications. However, those repetitions necessarily increase energy consumption and latency in the whole NB-IoT system. The extent to which the whole system is affected depends on the scheduling of the uplink and downlink channels. We address this question, not treated previously, by developing a tractable model of NB-IoT connectivity, comprising message exchanges in random-access, control, and data channels. The model is then used to analyze the impact of channel scheduling and interaction of coverage classes on the performance of IoT devices through the derivation of the expected latency and battery lifetime. These results are subsequently employed in determining the optimized operation points, i.e., (i) scheduling of data and control channels for a given set of users and respective coverage classes, or (ii) determining the optimal set of coverage classes and served users per coverage class for a given scheduling strategy. Simulations results show the validity of the analysis and confirm that channel scheduling and coexistence of coverage classes significantly affect latency and battery lifetime performance of NB-IoT devices.

  • Massive Machine-Type Communications in 5G: Physical and MAC-Layer Solutions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Magazine. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 54:9, s. 59-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MTC are expected to play an essential role within future 5G systems. In the FP7 project METIS, MTC has been further classified into mMTC and uMTC. While mMTC is about wireless connectivity to tens of billions of machine-type terminals, uMTC is about availability, low latency, and high reliability. The main challenge in mMTC is scalable and efficient connectivity for a massive number of devices sending very short packets, which is not done adequately in cellular systems designed for human-type communications. Furthermore, mMTC solutions need to enable wide area coverage and deep indoor penetration while having low cost and being energy-efficient. In this article, we introduce the PHY and MAC layer solutions developed within METIS to address this challenge.

  • Toward Massive, Ultrareliable, and Low-Latency Wireless Communication With Short Packets
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1558-2256 .- 0018-9219. ; 104:9, s. 1711-1726
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most of the recent advances in the design of highspeed wireless systems are based on information-theoretic principles that demonstrate how to efficiently transmit long data packets. However, the upcoming wireless systems, notably the fifth-generation (5G) system, will need to support novel traffic types that use short packets. For example, short packets represent the most common form of traffic generated by sensors and other devices involved in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. Furthermore, there are emerging applications in which small packets are expected to carry critical information that should be received with low latency and ultra-high reliability. Current wireless systems are not designed to support short-packet transmissions. For example, the design of current systems relies on the assumption that the metadata (control information) is of negligible size compared to the actual information payload. Hence, transmitting metadata using heuristic methods does not affect the overall system performance. However, when the packets are short, metadata may be of the same size as the payload, and the conventional methods to transmit it may be highly suboptimal. In this paper, we review recent advances in information theory, which provide the theoretical principles that govern the transmission of short packets. We then apply these principles to three exemplary scenarios (the two-way channel, the downlink broadcast channel, and the uplink random access channel), thereby illustrating how the transmission of control information can be optimized when the packets are short. The insights brought by these examples suggest that new principles are needed for the design of wireless protocols supporting short packets. These principles will have a direct impact on the system design.

  • An Overview of Device-to-Device Communications Technology Components in METIS
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2169-3536 .- 2169-3536. ; 4, s. 3288-3299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the standardization of network-assisted device-to-device (D2D) communications by the Third Generation Partnership Project progresses, the research community has started to explore the technology potential of new advanced features that will largely impact the performance of 5G networks. For 5G, D2D is becoming an integrative term of emerging technologies that take an advantage of the proximity of communicating entities in licensed and unlicensed spectra. The European 5G research project Mobile and Wireless Communication Enablers for the 2020 Information Society (METIS) has identified advanced D2D as a key enabler for a variety of 5G services, including cellular coverage extension, social proximity, and communicating vehicles. In this paper, we review the METIS D2D technology components in three key areas of proximal communications-network-assisted multi-hop, full-duplex, and multi-antenna D2D communications-and argue that the advantages of properly combining cellular and ad hoc technologies help to meet the challenges of the information society beyond 2020.
