  • Inside-out planet formation: VI. oligarchic coagulation of planetesimals from a pebble ring?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 510:4, s. 5486-5499
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inside-Out Planet Formation (IOPF) is a theory addressing the origin of Systems of Tightly-Packed Inner Planets (STIPs) via in situ formation and growth of the planets. It predicts that a pebble ring is established at the pressure maximum associated with the dead zone inner boundary (DZIB) with an inner disc magnetorotational instability (MRI)-active region. Using direct N -body simulations, we study the collisional evolution of planetesimals formed from such a pebble ring, in particular, examining whether a single dominant planet emerges. We consider a variety of models, including some in which the planetesimals are continuing to grow via pebble accretion. We find that the planetesimal ring undergoes oligarchic evolution, and typically turns into 2 or 3 surviving oligarchs on nearly coplanar and circular orbits, independent of the explored initial conditions or form of pebble accretion. The most massive oligarchs typically consist of about 70 per cent of the total mass, with the building-up process typically finishing within ∼10 5 yr. Ho we ver, a relati vely massi ve secondary planet al w ays remains with ∼30 -65 per cent of the mass of the primary. Such secondary planets have properties that are inconsistent with the observed properties of the innermost pairs of planets in STIPs. Thus, for IOPF to be a viable theory for STIP formation, it needs to be sho wn ho w oligarchic growth of a relatively massive secondary from the initial pebble ring can be a v oided. We discuss some potential additional physical processes that should be included in the modelling and explored as next steps.

  • Expanding shells around young clusters - S 171/Be 59
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 663
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. Some HII regions that surround young stellar clusters are bordered by molecular shells that appear to expand at a rate inconsistent with our current model simulations. In this study we focus on the dynamics of Sharpless 171 (including NGC 7822), which surrounds the cluster Berkeley 59. Aims. We aim to compare the velocity pattern over the molecular shell with the mean radial velocity of the cluster for estimates of the expansion velocities of different shell structures, and to match the observed properties with model simulations. Methods. Optical spectra of 27 stars located in Berkeley 59 were collected at the Nordic Optical Telescope, and a number of molecular structures scattered over the entire region were mapped in 13CO(1- 0) at Onsala Space Observatory. Results. We obtained radial velocities and MK classes for the clustera's stars. At least four of the O stars are found to be spectroscopic binaries, in addition to one triplet system. From these data we obtain the mean radial velocity of the cluster. From the 13CO spectra we identify three shell structures, expanding relative to the cluster at moderate velocity (4 km s- 1), high velocity (12 km s- 1), and in between. The high-velocity cloudlets extend over a larger radius and are less massive than the low-velocity cloudlets. We performed a model simulation to understand the evolution of this complex. Conclusions. Our simulation of the Sharpless 171 complex and Berkeley 59 cluster demonstrates that the individual components can be explained as a shell driven by stellar winds from the massive cluster members. However, our relatively simple model produces a single component. Modelling of the propagation of shell fragments through a uniform interstellar medium demonstrates that dense cloudlets detached from the shell are decelerated less efficiently than the shell itself. They can reach greater distances and retain higher velocities than the shell.

  • Fast spectrophotometry of WD 1145+017
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 481:1, s. 703-714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • WD 1145+017 is currently the only white dwarf known to exhibit periodic transits of planetary debris as well as absorption lines from circumstellar gas. We present the first simultaneous fast optical spectrophotometry and broad-band photometry of the system, obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the Liverpool Telescope, respectively. The observations spanned 5.5 h, somewhat longer than the 4.5-h orbital period of the debris. Dividing the GTC spectrophotometry into five wavelength bands reveals no significant colour differences, confirming grey transits in the optical. We argue that absorption by an optically thick structure is a plausible alternative explanation for the achromatic nature of the transits that can allow the presence of small-sized (~µm) particles. The longest (87 min) and deepest (50 per cent attenuation) transit recorded in our data exhibits a complex structure around minimum light that can be well modelled by multiple overlapping dust clouds. The strongest circumstellar absorption line, Fe II λ5169, significantly weakens during this transit, with its equivalent width reducing from a mean out-of-transit value of 2 to 1 Å in-transit, supporting spatial correlation between the circumstellar gas and dust. Finally, we made use of the Gaia Data Release 2 and archival photometry to determine the white dwarf parameters. Adopting a helium-dominated atmosphere containing traces of hydrogen and metals, and a reddening E(B - V) = 0.01 we find T_eff=15 020 ± 520 K, log g = 8.07 ± 0.07, corresponding to M_WD=0.63± 0.05 M☉ and a cooling age of 224 ± 30 Myr.

  • A planetesimal orbiting within the debris disc around a white dwarf star
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 364:6435, s. 66-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many white dwarf stars show signs of having accreted smaller bodies, implying that they may host planetary systems. A small number of these systems contain gaseous debris discs, visible through emission lines. We report a stable 123.4-minute periodic variation in the strength and shape of the Ca II emission line profiles originating from the debris disc around the white dwarf SDSS J122859.93+104032.9. We interpret this short-period signal as the signature of a solid-body planetesimal held together by its internal strength.

  • Pulsating ULXs : large pulsed fraction excludes strong beaming
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 501:2, s. 2424-2429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent discovery of pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) shows that the apparent luminosity of accreting neutron stars can exceed the Eddington luminosity by a factor of 100s. The relation between the actual and apparent luminosity is a key ingredient in theoretical models of ULXs, but it is still under debate. A typical feature of the discovered pulsating ULXs is a large pulsed fraction (PF). Using Monte Carlo simulations, we consider a simple geometry of accretion flow and test the possibility of simultaneous presence of a large luminosity amplification due the geometrical beaming and a high PF. We argue that these factors largely exclude each other and only a negligible fraction of strongly beamed ULX pulsars can show PF above 10 per cent. Discrepancy between this conclusion and current observations indicates that pulsating ULXs are not strongly beamed and their apparent luminosity is close to the actual one.
