  • “It’s Almost Impossible to Speak about It”: Sexual Abuse, Forgiveness, and the Need for Restitution Rituals
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Religions. - 2077-1444. ; 9:12, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this research was on ways in which Christian congregations can address the concept of forgiveness when caring for victims of sexual abuse, and to make suggestions for a restitution mass as a possible way for congregations to work with these victims. Interviews with seven women and one man, who were victims of sexual abuse, were analyzed according to inductive thematic analysis. Our focus was on abuse that had occurred outside Church, i.e., not perpetrated by representatives for the Church. The informants described how attending services in Church could trigger their memories of sexual abuse, and they struggled to understand the concept of forgiveness; who they were to forgive and what made their forgiveness good enough. They expressed a need for the Church to offer them a safe space, rituals where their experiences would be acknowledged, and to meet with other victims of sexual abuse. We argue that representatives for the Church need to acquire knowledge about sexual abuse and its consequences before offering care. Further, the presence of victims of sexual abuse in a congregation demands that the congregation create appropriate conditions where the victim’s needs and concerns are put into focus. Addressing forgiveness and offering rituals must be done in such a way that it does not consolidate the victim’s feelings of exclusion, guilt, and shame.

  • Jesus och politiken
  • 2024

  • Consumerism as a moral attitude: Defining consumerism through the works of Pope Francis, Cornel West, and William T. Cavanaugh
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Studia Theologica - Nordic Journal of Theology. - 0039-338X. ; 74:1, s. 4-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this theoretical and explorative essay, from an analysis of Pope Francis’, Cornel West's, and William T. Cavanaugh's works, it is argued that it is possible to construe a specific understanding of the concept of consumerism within the political theological discourse. From the analysis, consumerism is imagined as a fundamental attitude of remaining morally indifferent towards suffering. Accordingly, the proposed definition for consumerism is understood as the act of trivializing the good and remaining indifferent towards suffering. Furthermore, the article highlights how this definition of consumerism challenges the idea of consumerism as an “ersatz” religion, which is an understanding of consumerism that is often used within a Christian theological context. © 2020, © 2020 The Author(s). • Consumerism is not a religion : aiming for the trivial at the shopping mall
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary Religion. - : Routledge. - 1353-7903 .- 1469-9419. ; 39:1, s. 87-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This theoretical and exploratory article analyzes and critically examines the recurrent argument that equates consumption with religious practice. According to an argument offered mainly by theologians, consumerism is a form of 'ersatz' religion, thus serving as a competitor to the Church. As a starting-point for the exposition of this argument, this article examines the shopping mall as a sacred space by highlighting the theoretical work of Mircea Eliade and by arguing that consumerism is the religion practiced at the shopping mall. Although theologians have good reason to understand the shopping mall as a sacred space and consumerism as a religion, this article challenges their assertion through a reading mainly of the work by William Cavanaugh who argues that consumerism does not facilitate the pursuit of a telos. As this is a prerequisite for a religion to be considered as such, this article argues that consumerism should not be regarded as a religion and that the shopping mall should therefore not be considered as a sacred space. Finally, the consumerism of contemporary movements that are operating in the 'spiritual marketplace' is discussed. In particular, the article argues that too much focus on these movements risks obscuring the way other religions embrace consumerist logic.

  • En re-presentation av det sekulära: Bruno Latour i dialog med den postsekulära diskursen
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Svensk teologisk kvartalskrift. - 0039-6761. ; 95:3, s. 147-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a contribution to the post-secular discourse, this article deals with the French sociologist and philosopher Bruno Latour's work. Latour is of interest, not only because his thinking is consistent with the post-secular discourse, but also because it has not to any greater extent been used within theology. Two of Latour's major contributions are highlighted in the article. First, Latour's description of modernity provides a narrative basis for understanding the spread of secularism in the West. Latour argues that modern rationality marginalizes those actors that are claimed to represent pre-modern rationality, as they, according to modern rationality, impede the development of a more modern world. For that reason, modernity develops a general criticism of the public influence of religion, as it is maintained that religion, which is understood as part of the pre-modern world, prevents progress. Second, Latour challenges the public marginalization of religion by offering an alternative vision for organizing public life. He emphasizes that an inclusive public requires that all actors' concerns be presented over and over again. Such a "re-presentative" politics furthermore enables the formation of a new collective of actors - the public. Characteristic of this public is that it has no permanent stability. Instead, it will constantly change depending on which actors are being re-presented for the moment.

  • Legitimacy for Some: Right-Wing Populist Rationality and Antagonistic Politics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis. - : Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis. - 0582-3226 .- 2343-4937. ; 28, s. 30-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to examine under what conditions the disruptive character of right-wing populism can be perceived as a positive element within a functioning democracy. Using the thinking of philosophers Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe I argue that the disruptive character of right-wing populism gives the marginalised concerns of ‘the people’ public legitimacy. However, right-wing populism is also criticised for excluding, in a similar fashion, certain social actors from the public sphere. Instead of enabling a more inclusive society, I therefore argue that right-wing populism enables a society that is distinguished by antagonism. To make it possible for all social actors’ concerns to gain public legitimacy without promoting antagonism, I argue that a new political reality needs to be imagined. In conclusion I therefore offer a theoretical framework for such a reality through the political philosophy of Bruno Latour.

  • Liturgies in a plural age: The concept of liturgy in the works of William T. Cavanaugh and James K. A. Smith
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Studia Liturgica. - : SAGE Publications. - 0039-3207 .- 2517-4797. ; 49:1, s. 122-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the article the political theologians William T. Cavanaugh's and James K. A. Smith's understanding of liturgy is analyzed and compared. In an effort to engage with public life from the perspective of theology, they both develop an understanding of liturgy that does not restrict it to a practice within a Christian context Instead, they argue that liturgies are practices that also are observable within secular contexts. From this analysis, two understandings of liturgy are highlighted: liturgy as resistance and liturgy as dialogue. In conclusion, the article discusses what implications these understandings of liturgy have for the Church when confronting a contemporary pluralistic public context. © The Author(s) 20l9.

  • Should You Talk to Nazis? The Political Philosophy of Bruno Latour and the Controversy Surrounding the 2016-2017 Gothenburg Book Fair
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Human Rights. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1891-8131 .- 1891-814X. ; 38:4, s. 319-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through engaging with the political philosophy of Bruno Latour, this paper contributes to the discussion on human rights and the challenge of right-wing extremism. As the paper argues, Latour's works proceed from a critique of those actors who want to limit or deny the ability of other actors to present their concerns publicly. His political philosophy therefore raises the question of whether all matters of concern should be given public legitimacy. The issue is discussed in relation to the controversy and subsequent debate surrounding the 2016-2017 Gothenburg Book Fair, when the newspaper Nya Tider, which sympathises with right-wing extremist movements, was granted a permit to exhibit at the fair. The paper concludes that freedom of expression, according to Latour's reasoning, expresses the limit of public engagement by those actors who currently are not part of the public, while also signifying a prerequisite right in any democratic public.
