  • Guilt-tripping : On the relation between ethical decisions, climate change and the built environment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Urban Planning. - : Cogitatio. - 2183-7635. ; 5:4, s. 193-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The curiosity of how the built environment, implicitly and explicitly, affects how citizens and users make choices in their everyday life related to climate change is on the rise. If there is a nicely designed bike lane, the choice to bike to work is much more easily taken than if the only option is a densely trafficked road. But which responsibility does the built environment have for citizens to be as climate neutral as possible and, in extension, who should it burden? Is it the individual user, the designer, the planner, the policymaker or global politics? Media is playing an important and complicated role here; it works both as a source of information and as a trigger, instigating both feelings of guilt, fear, and shame in order to set change in motion. In this article, I will discuss everyday climate-related decision-making fuelled by shame and guilt, drawing on Judith Butler’s writings on ethical obligations and narrating it with findings from a mapping study of daily transportation routes that I conducted in a middle-class suburb outside of Lund, in Sweden. There appears to be a dissonance between the relatively high knowledge about one’s responsibility concerning climate change and the limited space to manoeuvre in everyday life. Even though shame and guilt may be driving forces to make decisions, the possibility to imagine and to change needs to be expanded.

  • Catching glimpses : the fragment-anthology as a strategy for architectural research
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 74-81
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The weaving together of fragments under the heading of a “weak” theme has a long tradition in research. The strategy has, however, not been so popular after the 19th century, even though advocates of a more modern fragmentology can be found, e.g. in Walter Benjamin. For Benjamin, the artefacts truly showed themselves only when the context had disappeared or been forgotten. In this article we would argue that, for the investigations of marginal aspects within architecture, the research strategy of collecting fragments could be especially promising. They belong to the strategies of “weak thought” that, as Vattimo proposes, have the strength of the debilitated through the use of tangential and transversal sources instead of fostering the authoritative and the dominant. Starting with a critical analysis of classical anthologies through the notion of the “title”, we proceed to present a series of intellectuals that have developed alternative methods to do their own researches and explorations of reality with fragments. Afterwards, we study the possibilities and risks that fragments pose when doing research, as well as, developing an inventory of strategies for working with fragments. Ultimately, we formulate how fragments, brought together as “fragment-anthologies”, could be used as a specific research technique.

  • Spatial resilience and urban planning : Addressing the interdependence of urban retail areas
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Cities. - : Elsevier. - 0264-2751 .- 1873-6084. ; 36:1, s. 121-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we look at examples of three predominant kinds of Swedish retail places – the pedestrianised city centre, the neighbourhood centre and the regional shopping mall – all of which play important (winning or losing) roles in contemporary retail development. This investigation is based on an empirical study of the Malmö region (in southern Sweden) and the findings suggest that the different retail areas are developing independently following the logic of their own business. They have failed to relate their business to the retailscape of the urban region. We also develop spatial resilience as a concept that can be used to acknowledge the interdependence of different retail areas in discussions of urban and regional planning. We argue that more fluid or associative means of stabilisation seem to be overlooked in the present strategies for retail resilience, leaving more classical network stabilization as the only means of choice.

  • RHYTHM ARCHITECTURE : ON SEQUENTIAL ASPECTS OF MATERIALITIES IN URBAN SPACE
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Even though architecture often might be conceived of as timeless, there has always been different ways of dealing with time in architectural discourse and practice. Since the early 20th century the temporal activities that goes on in and between buildings has, for example, been addressed by concepts such as function, flexibility and program. Architecture is of inevitable importance in our everyday social lives and has a political role to play also in its mere factual claiming and changing of space. But architecture is also a kind of delegated, or materialized, representation and manifestation of political powers in society, powers we generally don’t know completely, but still need to acknowledge. My investigation departs as a personal reaction, originating several years ago, to the still widely held notion of architecture as atemporal, well-designed built objects striving towards aesthetic perfection and created by a single author. A plausible way to capture, i.e. to experience and represent architecture as a less stable and more situated phenomenon would be through the study of various rhythms of urban life. In this study it is more precisely the micro-rhythms that connect everyday life situations with the built environment, placing architecture in between the subjective experience and the objective experiential frame that is being examined. I am thus interested in how mundane activities such as eating, walking, shopping, smoking, waiting, etc., brings different kinds of materialities together in a sequential and rhythmical fashion. How are these events architecturally enacted and articulated? How are different materialities put into use, and how can this use be conceptualized and represented? The methods are based in a series of timelapse photos and observations in Värnhemstorget, which is a square in Malmö in the south of Sweden. The project also entails more experimental studies and exercises, including two workshops with master students in architecture. Three main concepts have been developed – rhythm figure, rhythm network and rhythm architecture – as well as a series of methodological explorations and different forms of representations. Together, these become tools that enable a discussion of the more transient and fluid aspects of the built environment.
