  • Linking macrodetritivore distribution to desiccation resistance in small forest fragments embedded in agricultural landscapes in Europe
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Landscape Ecology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-2973 .- 1572-9761. ; 33:3, s. 407-421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most of the agricultural landscape in Europe, and elsewhere, consists of mosaics with scattered fragments of semi-natural habitat like small forest fragments. Mutual interactions between forest fragments and agricultural areas influence ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling, a process strongly mediated by the macrodetritivore community, which is however, poorly studied. We investigated macrodetritivore distribution patterns at local and landscape-level and used a key functional trait (desiccation resistance) to gain mechanistic insights of the putative drivers.

  • Strength of forest edge effects on litter-dwelling macro-arthropods across Europe is influenced by forest age and edge properties
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Diversity & distributions. - : Wiley. - 1366-9516 .- 1472-4642. ; 25:6, s. 963-974

    • AimForests are highly fragmented across Western Europe, making forest edges important features in many agricultural landscapes. Forest edges are subject to strong abiotic gradients altering the forest environment and resulting in strong biotic gradients. This has the potential to change the forest's capacity to provide multiple ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and natural pest control. Soil organisms play a key role in this perspective; however, these taxa are rarely considered in forest edge research.LocationA latitudinal gradient of 2,000 km across Western Europe.MethodsWe sampled six dominant taxa of litter-dwelling macro-arthropods (carabid beetles, spiders, harvestmen, centipedes, millipedes and woodlice) in forest edges and interiors of 192 forest fragments in 12 agricultural landscapes. We related their abundance and community composition to distance from the edge and the interaction with forest age, edge orientation and edge contrast (contrast between land use types at either side of the edge).ResultsThree out of six macro-arthropod taxa have higher activity-density in forest edges compared to forest interiors. The abundance patterns along forest edge-to-interior gradients interacted with forest age. Forest age and edge orientation also influenced within-fragment compositional variation along the forest edge-to-interior gradient. Edge contrast influenced abundance gradients of generalist predators. In general, older forest fragments, south-oriented edges and edges along structurally more continuous land use (lower contrast between forest and adjacent land use) resulted in stronger edge-to-interior gradients while recent forests, north-oriented edges and sharp land use edges induced similarity between forest edge and interior along the forest edge-to-interior gradients in terms of species activity-density and composition.Main conclusionsEdge effects on litter-dwelling macro-arthropods are anticipated to feedback on important ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and natural pest control from small forest fragments.

  • A novel mutation in the complement regulator clusterin in recurrent hemolytic uremic syndrome.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Molecular Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-9142 .- 0161-5890. ; 46, s. 2236-2243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel heterozygous mutation in the clusterin gene, nucleotide position A1298C (glutamine>proline Q433P), was detected in exon 7 of a child with recurrent hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The same mutation was found in the child's two siblings and mother but not in 120 controls. In addition, a previously described heterozygous mutation was detected in the gene encoding membrane cofactor protein (MCP) causing a 6 base-pair deletion 811-816delGACAGT in exon 6. It was found in the patient, both siblings and the father. One sibling had recovered from post-streptoccocal glomerulonephritis. Clusterin levels in the patient, siblings and parents were normal as was the migration pattern in a gel. Patient serum induced C3 and C9 deposition on normal washed platelets, and platelet activation, as detected by flow cytometry. The same phenomenon was found in serum taken from the siblings and the mother but not in the sample from the father and controls. Addition of clusterin to patient serum did not inhibit complement activation on platelets. The Q433P mutant, in isolated form, was further studied by binding to the components of the terminal complement complex. The mutant did not bind to C5b-7 that was immobilized onto a BIAcore chip, whereas wild-type clusterin did, indicating that the mutation could lead to defective inhibition of formation of the membrane attack complex under these conditions. Hemolysis of rabbit erythrocytes was inhibited by wild-type clusterin but not by the mutant. Mutated clusterin could thus not prevent assembly of the membrane attack complex on platelets and erythrocytes.

  • High ecosystem service delivery potential of small woodlands in agricultural landscapes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Ecology. - : Wiley. - 0021-8901 .- 1365-2664. ; 57:1, s. 4-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global forest loss and fragmentation have strongly increased the frequency of forest patches smaller than a few hectares. Little is known about the biodiversity and ecosystem service supply potential of such small woodlands in comparison to larger forests. As it is widely recognized that high biodiversity levels increase ecosystem functionality and the delivery of multiple ecosystem services, small, isolated woodlands are expected to have a lower potential for ecosystem service delivery than large forests hosting more species. We collected data on the diversity of six taxonomic groups covering invertebrates, plants and fungi, and on the supply potential of five ecosystem services and one disservice within 224 woodlands distributed across temperate Europe. We related their ability to simultaneously provide multiple ecosystem services (multiservice delivery potential) at different performance levels to biodiversity of all studied taxonomic groups (multidiversity), forest patch size and age, as well as habitat availability and connectivity within the landscape, while accounting for macroclimate, soil properties and forest structure. Unexpectedly, despite their lower multidiversity, smaller woodlands had the potential to deliver multiple services at higher performance levels per area than larger woodlands of similar age, probably due to positive edge effects on the supply potential of several ecosystem services. Biodiversity only affected multiservice delivery potential at a low performance level as well as some individual ecosystem services. The importance of other drivers of ecosystem service supply potential by small woodlands in agricultural landscapes also depended on the level of performance and varied with the individual ecosystem service considered. Synthesis and applications. Large, ancient woodlands host high levels of biodiversity and can therefore deliver a number of ecosystem services. In contrast, smaller woodlands in agricultural landscapes, especially ancient woodlands, have a higher potential to deliver multiple ecosystem services on a per area basis. Despite their important contribution to agricultural landscape multifunctionality, small woodlands are not currently considered by public policies. There is thus an urgent need for targeted policy instruments to ensure their adequate management and future conservation in order to either achieve multiservice delivery at high levels or to maximize the delivery of specific ecosystem services.

  • Epidemiology, clinical presentation, and pathophysiology of atypical and recurrent hemolytic uremic syndrome
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis. - : Georg Thieme Verlag KG. - 1098-9064 .- 0094-6176. ; 32:2, s. 113-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) includes a heterogeneous group of hemolytic disorders. Among the identified causes of HUS are infections, particularly infections with Shiga toxin-producing ESCHERICHIA COLI (STEC), complement disorders, and disorders interfering with the degradation of von Willebrand factor (VWF). Other causes for atypical HUS include the cobalamin metabolism; pregnancy/hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets syndrome (HELLP); drugs; and other disorders (e.g., systemic diseases appearing as HUS, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rejection after transplantation). The group not related to STEC is often also called atypical HUS. Most of the occurrences of infectious HUS have only one episode. Recurrent episodes (recurrent HUS) have strong relationships to diseases of the complement system. In these two subgroups the prognosis is poor, with severe renal insufficiency, together with the need for renal replacement therapy. Severe arterial hypertension is common. Treatment options are limited. To better define this group of patients, the European Society for Pediatric Nephrology supported an initiative to develop a European HUS registry. In this registry, 167 patients were acquired; 73 were female (43.8%). The year of onset of the disease ranged from 1974 to 2005. The prevalence of atypical HUS/recurrent HUS can be calculated as 3.3 per million child population (< 18 years). Underlying disorders included factor H, factor I, MCP-1, pneumococci, and von Willebrand factor disturbances. In 33 patients at least one renal transplantation was performed (total, 55 kidneys); 18% were successful and 73% demonstrated recurrence or thrombosis. Treatment options were plasma substitution or plasmapheresis. Despite continued efforts, transplantation is not recommended at present for these patients. Living-related transplantation should be abandoned. New therapeutic strategies are urgently needed.
