    • The hornwort Anthoceros agrestis is emerging as a model system for the study of symbiotic interactions and carbon fixation processes. It is an annual species with a remarkably small and compact genome. Single accessions of the plant have been shown to be related to the cosmopolitan perennial hornwort Anthoceros punctatus. We provide the first detailed insight into the evolutionary history of the two species. Due to the rather conserved nature of organellar loci, we sequenced multiple accessions in the Anthoceros agrestis–A. punctatus complex using three nuclear regions: the ribosomal spacer ITS2, and exon and intron regions from the single-copy coding genes rbcS and phytochrome. We used phylogenetic and dating analyses to uncover the relationships between these two taxa. Our analyses resolve a lineage of genetically near-uniform European A. agrestis accessions and two non-European A. agrestis lineages. In addition, the cosmopolitan species Anthoceros punctatus forms two lineages, one of mostly European accessions, and another from India. All studied European A. agrestis accessions have a single origin, radiated relatively recently (less than 1 million years ago), and are currently strictly associated with agroecosystem habitats.

    • © 2019 The European Pediatric Pulmonary Vascular Disease Network is a registered, non-profit organization that strives to define and develop effective, innovative diagnostic methods and treatment options in all forms of pediatric pulmonary hypertensive vascular disease, including pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, PH associated with congenital heart disease (CHD), persistent PH of the newborn, and related cardiac dysfunction. The executive writing group members conducted searches of the PubMed/MEDLINE bibliographic database (1990–2018) and held face-to-face and web-based meetings. Ten section task forces voted on the updated recommendations, based on the 2016 executive summary. Clinical trials, meta-analyses, guidelines, and other articles that include pediatric data were searched using the term “pulmonary hypertension” and other keywords. Class of recommendation (COR) and level of evidence (LOE) were assigned based on European Society of Cardiology/American Heart Association definitions and on pediatric data only, or on adult studies that included >10% children or studies that enrolled adults with CHD. New definitions by the World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension 2018 were included. We generated 10 tables with graded recommendations (COR/LOE). The topics include diagnosis/monitoring, genetics/biomarkers, cardiac catheterization, echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance/chest computed tomography, associated forms of PH, intensive care unit/lung transplantation, and treatment of pediatric PH. For the first time, a set of specific recommendations on the management of PH in middle- and low-income regions was developed. Taken together, these executive, up-to-date guidelines provide a specific, comprehensive, detailed but practical framework for the optimal clinical care of children and young adults with PH.

  • Resolution of the ordinal phylogeny of mosses using targeted exons from organellar and nuclear genomes

    • Mosses are a highly diverse lineage of land plants, whose diversification, spanning at least 400 million years, remains phylogenetically ambiguous due to the lack of fossils, massive early extinctions, late radiations, limited morphological variation, and conflicting signal among previously used markers. Here, we present phylogenetic reconstructions based on complete organellar exomes and a comparable set of nuclear genes for this major lineage of land plants. Our analysis of 142 species representing 29 of the 30 moss orders reveals that relative average rates of non-synonymous substitutions in nuclear versus plastid genes are much higher in mosses than in seed plants, consistent with the emerging concept of evolutionary dynamism in mosses. Our results highlight the evolutionary significance of taxa with reduced morphologies, shed light on the relative tempo and mechanisms underlying major cladogenic events, and suggest hypotheses for the relationships and delineation of moss orders.

  • Unveiling the nature of a miniature world : a horizon scan of fundamental questions in bryology

    • Introduction. Half a century since the creation of the International Association of Bryologists, we carried out a review to identify outstanding challenges and future perspectives in bryology. Specifically, we have identified 50 fundamental questions that are critical in advancing the discipline.Methods. We have adapted a deep-rooted methodology of horizon scanning to identify key research foci. An initial pool of 258 questions was prepared by a multidisciplinary and international working group of 32 bryologists. A series of online surveys completed by a broader community of researchers in bryology, followed by quality-control steps implemented by the working group, were used to create a list of top-priority questions. This final list was restricted to 50 questions with a broad conceptual scope and answerable through realistic research approaches.Key results. The top list of 50 fundamental questions was organised into four general topics: Bryophyte Biodiversity and Biogeography; Bryophyte Ecology, Physiology and Reproductive Biology; Bryophyte Conservation and Management; and Bryophyte Evolution and Systematics. These topics included 9, 19, 14 and 8 questions, respectively.Conclusions. Although many of the research challenges identified are not newly conceived, our horizon-scanning exercise has established a significant foundation for future bryological research. We suggest analytical and conceptual strategies and novel developments for potential use in advancing the research agenda for bryology.

    • Flowers of four species of Sabia are investigated using scanning electron and light microscopy to understand the complex floral system of Sabiaceae and to contribute to the understanding of the systematic position of the family among early diverging eudicots. The structure of the mature flower and the floral anatomy are here described and compared with that of the sister genus Meliosma. The floral structure is relatively uniform with the greatest variability in the shape of the nectary and the differentiation of the style. Flowers share a similar pollen release mechanism, as pollen is extruded from the monosporangiate thecae through an inward-out dehiscence process leading to seemingly extrorse anthers occasionally accompanied by the curving of the upper part of the filaments. The bicarpellate ovary is divided in a synascidiate zone and a symplicate zone of similar size with two superposed unitegmic ovules per carpel. The floral Bauplan of Sabia can be interpreted as precursory to a further evolution of the monosymmetric flower of Meliosma, as both genera share numerous characters. The isolated position of Sabiaceae in the early diverging eudicots is highlighted by their unique floral morphology, although several features point to a link with Ranunculales, such as Menispermaceae. These probably reflect the existence of apomorphic tendencies shared by members of the early diverging eudicots.

    • In our recent paper on the relationships of 21 European Hypnum taxa we introduced the name Hypnum subcomplanatum Hedenäs, Schlesak & D. Quandt as a new name at the species level, based on the basionym Hypnum cupressiforme var. subjulaceum Molendo (Schlesak et al. 2018). We were aware that H. cupressiforme var. subjulaceum had already been elevated and combined at the species rank (Stereodon subjulaceum (Molendo) Loeske & Osterwald [Verh. Bot. Vereins Prov. Brandenburg 49: 65. 1907)], but unfortunately overlooked that Hypnum subjulaceum Besch. was not validly published. The latter therefore cannot block a species level combination in Hypnum based on H. cupressiforme var. subjulaceum Molendo (Art. 53.1 of the Code). Because no homonym issues exist, the epithet ’subjulaceum’ has priority when combined under Hypnum. The new combination follows:
