    • Backcasting has become a widely applied approach to address sustainability challenges when transformative changes are required. However, dispersed and contextualized knowledge of backcasting methodologies and practices needs to be systematized, codified, and synthesized to support researchers, commissioners, practitioners, and stakeholders in backcasting projects. In this paper, we address these issues by (i) concisely reviewing the evolution and current body of literature on backcasting and how this relates to other major types of futures and scenario studies and (ii) developing a design framework for researchers and practitioners that systematically covers all methodological choices with regard to key guiding questions to develop a backcasting methodology for a particular backcasting project. The developed design framework is based on four parts, characterized by the interrogatives when, which, how, and what, creating a comprehensive framework for describing a backcasting study.

  • Circular Economy in the building sector : Three cases and a collaboration tool

    • The Circular Economy (CE) gained significant traction in business and academia. While in the building sector issues around energy efficiency are being widely explored, CE is still a relatively new topic. This article reports on three CE pilots in the Dutch building sector and develops a collaboration tool for developing and operating circular buildings and their supply chain collaborations. First, a conceptual framework is developed to study supply chain collaboration in circular buildings, which uses theoretical building blocks for visions, actor learning, network dynamics and business model innovation. Second, a case study is presented where the framework is applied to three cases using semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Third, an empirically-based tool is developed to enhance collaboration for CE in the building sector. The cases include a newly built project, a renovation project and a demolition project. It was found that developing circular buildings requires (i) a new process design where a variety of disciplines in the supply chain is integrated upfront, (ii) the co-creation of an ambitious vision, (iii) extension of responsibilities to actors along the entire building supply chain, and (iv) new business and ownership models.

    • A Circular Economy (CE) constitutes one pathway towards realising sustainable productionand consumption. Here, the repair of broken products (compared to replacement) consti-tutes an important strategy to keep products in the economy for longer, thereby reducingwaste, as well as the need to extract resources and emit pollution in the manufacture of areplacement product. In today’s world, repair does not necessarily constitute the naturalresponse to product breakage. However, increasing legislative efforts and grassroots move-ments are attempting to change that and make repair accessible, affordable and culturallyacceptable. The question is what such a society – where repair is normalised – would be like.

  • Advancing participatory backcasting for climate change adaptation planning using 10 cases from 3 continents

    • In the face of climate change, a major challenge is to inform and guide long-term climate change adaptation planning under deep uncertainty, while aiming at transformative change. Normative futures studies approaches, such as participatory backcasting, visioning and transition management, are increasingly applied, but their potential for climate change adaptation research and practice remains undervalued. This paper aims to advance the potential of backcasting in climate adaptation, by comparing various climate change adaptation studies that have used backcasting or visioning approaches. A framework has been further developed and applied to evaluate 10 cases in Africa, Europe and North America, using four dimensions: (i) inputs and settings; (ii) process and methods (iii) results, and (iv), impact. Our evaluation provides key insights into the use and further development of backcasting for climate adaptation. Key elements to add are advanced system modeling, robust elements, pathway switching and hybrid pathways, enhancing participation of marginal groups, and contributing to impact by facilitating the utilization of results and knowledge in practice and decision making.

    • Abstract in UndeterminedCurrent production and consumption are unsustainable. Traditional business models do not fully account for ecosystem services and social costs. Innovative value creation models (IVMs) that take into consideration environmental costs and social goals in addition to financial profit in which new modes of production, consumption and value creation are devised by new set of actors are needed. IVMs have not been researched systematically. This paper aims to 1) showcase IVMs supporting sustainable living; 2) discuss their environmental implications and role in fostering sustainability transitions. Theories applied are business model and social innovation, and socio-technical transitions. Case study approach is used to analyse IVMs in four consumption sectors: energy and housing, food and drink, mobility and consumer goods. Data is collected via meta-analysis of peer-reviewed articles, books, conference proceedings, reports and policies in online data bases. Data is analysed via in-depth case analysis of IVMs in four sectors, and cross-case comparison between the sectors. The paper discusses actor-network and institutional dynamics in IVMs and their environmental implications. It identifies patterns in the development of IVMs: shifts in producer-consumer dynamics, which have implications for resource flows in the society, and IVMs’ potential to reduce environmental impacts. It highlights the importance of ICT in IVMs’ proliferation and acknowledges the risk of rebound effects stemming from wicked problems associated with IVM implementation. Future research needs to focus on development of IVM classification, delineation of mechanisms and pathways to scale up the promising IVMs and the development of a sound methodology to measure environmental, social and economic effects of IVMs.
