- Mit Automatismen zwangsläufig verbunden ist die Frage nach dem Selbst und nach den Bedingungen, die es hervorbringen. Automatismen setzen ein ›Selbst‹ einerseits voraus, andererseits ist zu fragen, wie ein ›Selbst‹ entsteht, wie es sich stabilisiert und reproduziert, und welchen Anteil hieran wiederum Automatismen haben. Auf Seiten der Technik kann das Konzept der Automatismen abgegrenzt werden gegenüber Theorien zum Automaten. Im Fokus des Bandes stehen Selbsttechnologien in einem umfassenden Sinne: kulturelle Muster der Selbstkonstitution, Prozesse der Selbststeuerung und Praktiken der Selbstführung wie auch Formen des Selbstmanagements.

While 'protocol' may refer specifically to Internet protocols, it also describes a mode of organisation evident in a variety of technical and non-technical settings.

- Facebook hat das Internet erobert. Lange als Trivialität belächelt, lässt sich die Relevanz der »sozialen Netzwerke« heute nicht mehr bestreiten. Als Umschlagplatz für soziale Beziehungen aller Art erlangt gerade der Marktführer immer größere ökonomische Macht und politische Bedeutung und nistet sich zusehends tiefer in gesellschaftliche Strukturen ein. In diesem Band kommen internationale Autorinnen und Autoren zu Wort, die erstmals eine umfassende medien- und kulturkritische Perspektive auf Facebook entwickeln. Colliberate : The practices of free and open source software

- This ethnography explores the inner workings of LibreOffice, a free and open source software project. It explores the practices that underlie the collaborative production of an office suite of software that can be shared, used, copied, modified and redistributed freely. Thereby this dissertation provides an insight into how ethical ideas, technical expertise and governance structures inform the practices that are used. Such an approach provides important access into the underbelly of software which is too often perceived as neutral infrastructure for digital media. The most important result of this dissertation is the explanation of a complex interplay of technology, political notions, community spirit, and governance mechanisms forms the basis for the collaborative practices to build software. Understanding software as a set of practices allows further investigations into digital media that can produce much needed knowledge about software which has become the infrastructure of everyday life.This study shows that software is not a technical expression but much more the result of a plethora of influences. It analyses a number of key topics: the practices that are activated – how people with different levels of skills and knowledge manage to establish a common way; the break of a community of collaborators with a major software company with the help of a standard technical practice; the complex entanglement of volunteers and economic interests of companies that contribute to the project; the differences within free and open source software - mostly expressed through licenses – that can sometimes result in open conflicts because of diverging perceptions of what freedom and / or openness means; and the role of a specific form of governance in a project that rests on an ideal notion of decentralization.

- The Open Graph protocol, introduced in 2010, has allowed Facebook to extend its reach far beyond the confines of the platform itself. It provides the basic technical infrastructure of connecting and sharing and encourages specific forms of analysis and usage. We argue that, if Facebook is to be conceptualized as a mass medium, the Open Graph is where media and masses mutually (re-)configure one another. In order to disentangle these relationships, we investigate backend and frontend practices from three different angles – descriptive, analytical and historical – and investigate how seemingly incompatible media promises converge.

For us, this was reason enough to start an experiment aiming at crowdfunding the publication of a book. This chapter is a report of the campaign – and its failure.
