  • Evidence of Construct Validity for the Modified Mental Fatigue Scale When Used in Persons with Cerebral Palsy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Developmental Neurorehabilitation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1751-8423 .- 1751-8431. ; 23:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Fatigue impacts negatively on everyday activities in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). More knowledge is needed about how mental fatigue is manifested in this target group. The purpose of this study was to gather evidence about the validity of the modified Mental Fatigue Scale (m-MFS) in adults with CP. Methods: Mixed sequential exploratory design. The respondents were ten persons aged 22-56 with CP (MACS I-II). Results: The respondents perceived the m-MFS as easy to read and understand. Its structure was characterised as straightforward and the text of the rating options was deemed to assist identification with life situations. Very good agreement was seen between the respondents' and the instrument designers' intended meaning for the items in the m-MFS; the weighted kappa was 0.92. Conclusion: This study showed evidence of construct validity, based on response processes and content, for use of the modified MFS in adults with CP.

  • Bereal - method for pellet stoves : Field test and round robin
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Biomass Conf. Exhib. Proc.. - : ETA-Florence Renewable Energies. ; , s. 642-647
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent pellet stoves perform excellently under type test conditions. In contrast, typical real life emissions show significantly higher values under usual operational conditions. Consequently, type testing procedures may not account for real life stove operation and, thus, do not allow to distinguish between low- and high-tech appliances. The EU-project beReal aimed at the development of a testing method for pellet stoves that reflects real life operations better and to support innovative pellet stoves that perform well under typical operational conditions. Based on an online survey and field observations, an advanced real life testing procedure for pellet stoves was established reflecting real life user behavior, e.g. regarding different load levels and the ignition phase. A field test was designed at the end of the project to demonstrate the applicability and practical relevance. The field test proved that emission values for beReal at the test stand and in the field stay within the same range. A Round Robin test proved the repeatability and reproducibility of the beReal testing procedure. The beReal method can be reproduced with the same statistical variability or performed even better than the type testing method with exception of PM between different laboratories. © 2017, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies. • Particle emission from combustion of oat grain and its potential reduction by addition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Fuel Processing Technology. - 0378-3820. ; 90:3, s. 353-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Second-rate cereals, unsuitable for food, can be used as fuel for small-scale production of heat and hot water. However, there are more problems related to cereals than to woody fuels. This work aims at characterisingthe particle emission from residential combustion of oat grain and its potential reduction by addition oflimestone or kaolin with the fuel. Then, to a large extent, the potassium supplied by the fuel is expected to befound in coarse particles, leaving the boiler as bottom ash, instead of being emitted to the air in the form ofsubmicron particles. Combustion experiments were performed on a residential boiler, using filter samplingand low-pressure impactors to measure the mass and number concentrations and size distributions of theemitted particles. The particles and the bottom ash were subsequently analysed for inorganic material. Tocheck the combustion conditions and basic emissions from combustion of cereals, the flue gas was analysedwith respect to gaseous O2, CO2, CO, NOx, TOC (total organic carbon), HCl and SO2. Furthermore, thermodynamic equilibrium analysis was used to support the experimental data. Finally, it is concluded thatthe particle emission can be lowered by supplying kaolin, while there was no effect of limestone.© 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

  • Vedkaminen år 2020 - en del av boendemiljön
  • 2016
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Wood Stove year 2020 - a part of the living environmentThis project is a collaboration between Nibe AB / Contura and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden. Based on earlier evaluations of six different technology tracks, three tracks were selected to further evaluate: CFD modeling, active control and catalyst technology, with the long term goals of particle emission, control of maximum output and long burning time. A literature review of available sensors for O2, CO and hydrocarbons have been conducted followed by a market research, focusing on developments during the last decade and experiences from biomass combustion. Sensors were long-term tested. The lambda probe works well and is affordable, while sensors for unburnt gases still need to be further optimized for accuracy and long-term stability and also become less expensive to be of practical use. Active control has been applied to a prototype and evaluated with good results. In further work with active control, emphasis should be on safety. A CFD method for stove combustion has led to an industrial application with significant cuts in time and resources. Advanced CFD simulation has been used to examine the impact of furnace temperature on wood conversion and how wood log size can be used to counteract an accelerating power output. Simulation results show that log size has good potential to contribute to an improved combustion, but should be combined with further design of the stove. A rig for evaluation of catalyst coatings has been built and experimental results are promising. CO was in principle eliminated from the flue gas and hydrocarbon concentration were reduced down to a level equivalent to 25-70% of the original content.

  • Modulation of the endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria interface in Alzheimer's disease and related models
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 110:19, s. 7916-7921
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well-established that subcompartments of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are in physical contact with the mitochondria. These lipid raft-like regions of ER are referred to as mitochondria-associated ER membranes (MAMs), and they play an important role in, for example, lipid synthesis, calcium homeostasis, and apoptotic signaling. Perturbation of MAM function has previously been suggested in Alzheimer's disease (AD) as shown in fibroblasts from AD patients and a neuroblastoma cell line containing familial presenilin-2 AD mutation. The effect of AD pathogenesis on the ER-mitochondria interplay in the brain has so far remained unknown. Here, we studied ER-mitochondria contacts in human AD brain and related AD mouse and neuronal cell models. We found uniform distribution of MAM in neurons. Phosphofurin acidic cluster sorting protein-2 and sigma 1 receptor, two MAM-associated proteins, were shown to be essential for neuronal survival, because siRNA knockdown resulted in degeneration. Up-regulated MAM-associated proteins were found in the AD brain and amyloid precursor protein (APP)(Swe/Lon) mouse model, in which up-regulation was observed before the appearance of plaques. By studying an ER-mitochondria bridging complex, inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate receptor-voltage-dependent anion channel, we revealed that nanomolar concentrations of amyloid beta-peptide increased inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate receptor and voltage-dependent anion channel protein expression and elevated the number of ER-mitochondria contact points and mitochondrial calcium concentrations. Our data suggest an important role of ER-mitochondria contacts and cross-talk in AD pathology.
