  • Firm boundaries in servitization: Interplay and repositioning practices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 90, s. 90-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study analyzes how servitization delineates a manufacturers boundaries. Based on interviews with 57 senior managers and extensive secondary data collected from four global solution providers, this study contributes by revealing how servitization shapes firm boundary decisions and repositioning practices. First, the results demonstrate that servitization changes a manufacturers a) identity from technology-focused to customer-centric, b) capabilities to integrate technology development with customer value understanding, c) power position in the manufacturing ecosystem from upstream to downstream, and d) efficiency logic toward a service factory logic. Second, this study describes the interplay among these boundary lenses in servitization. The developed framework can assist managers in their strategy implementation when moving toward servitization.

  • Overcoming the challenges of smart solution development: Co-alignment of processes, routines, and practices to manage product, service, and software integration
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Technovation. - : Elsevier. - 0166-4972 .- 1879-2383. ; 118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study scrutinizes how an incumbent solution provider executes smart solution development (SSD). We aim to contribute to digital servitization research, which primarily focuses on either product, service, or software development, thus overlooking the integrative aspect of SSD. We unfold the holistic SSD development process in a single case study through 23 manager interviews, observational data, and strategic document analysis. The study extends the product-service innovations (PSI) literature by 1) identifying a set of innovation routines, such as collaborative, customer-focused, and decision-making, 2) demonstrating innovation management processes and practices associated with those routines, and 3) highlighting the co-alignment of innovation processes, routines, and practices to achieve improved outcomes from SSD. The study translates the empirical work into a framework and a set of propositions to guide future research. For managers, the study provides a framework and a set of capability-enhancing practices for a benchmark.

  • Resource realignment in servitization : A study of successful service providers explores how manufacturers modify their
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Research technology management. - : Industrial Research Institute Inc.. - 0895-6308 .- 1930-0166. ; 59:4, s. 30-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When transitioning from a product-centered business model to one focusing on providing services and solutions, manufacturers must realign and reallocate resources to support the new business model. Based on a study of nine leading solution providers that have successfully transitioned from products to services, we demonstrate how manufacturers create new resources and organizational structures to facilitate co-creation of value with customers, leverage existing resources to develop new service products and markets, and systematically release non-core upstream resources to nurture downstream resources.

  • Unfolding the simple heuristics of smart solution development
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Service Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1757-5818 .- 1757-5826. ; 33:1, s. 121-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The present study intends to foster understanding of how a traditional manufacturer can utilize the “simple rules” approach of managerial heuristics to facilitate its smart solution development (SSD) process.Design/methodology/approach: The study uses an in-depth single case research strategy and 25 senior manager interviews to understand the application of simple rules in smart solution development.Findings: The findings reveal process, boundary, preference, schedule, and stop rules as the dominant managerial heuristics in the case and identify how the manufacturer applies these rules during the innovation process phases of ideation, incubation, transformation, and industrialization for attaining project outcomes.Research limitations/implications: The study contributes to the new service development (NSD) literature by shedding light on simple rules and how managers may apply them to facilitate SSD. The main limitations stem from applying the qualitative case study approach and the interpretative nature of the study, which produces novel insights but prevents direct generalization to other empirical cases.Practical implications: The resulting framework provides guidelines for managers on how to establish formal and clear simple rules that enable industrial solution providers to approach decision-making in smart solution development in a more agile manner.Originality/value: The study comprises one of the first attempts to investigate managerial heuristics in the context of SSD and puts forward a plea for further NSD research applying psychological conceptualizations to enrich the simple rules perspective.

  • Alliance capabilities : A systematic review and future research directions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 68, s. 188-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to manage, integrate and learn from strategic alliances is essential in today's interconnected and globalized economy. Despite the managerial relevance of alliance capability, there remain several open questions related to the conceptualization of alliance capabilities, their antecedents, processes and outcomes, and future research needs. We address these issues through a systematic review of 94 articles from top-tier journals focused on alliance capabilities. This study makes three contributions. The study (1) defines the concept of alliance capabilities when operating in a dyadic relational context by reviewing the rich alliance capability literature, acknowledging and bridging the works conducted in different fields. We (2) identify the main processes, antecedents and outcomes of alliance capabilities and, through this analysis, pave the way for (3) the creation of a comprehensive research agenda to direct future research efforts. Overall, this study extends the existing literature by providing an integrative view of alliance capability research in various fields.

  • Exploring servitization through the paradox lens : Coping practices in servitization
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Economics. - : Elsevier. - 0925-5273 .- 1873-7579. ; 226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study analyzes the coping practices that emerge when a manufacturer of standardized products and add-on services expands to provide customized solutions. Based on a comparative case study methodology conducted across four case companies, and an analysis of extensive documentary data, the study challenges the dichotomous ‘either-or thinking’ in servitization research and highlights ‘both-and thinking’ by identifying both paradoxes and coping practices. The study extends the literature by identifying four paradoxes in servitization: 1) effectiveness in the customization of solutions vs. efficiency in product manufacturing, 2) building a customer orientation vs. maintaining an engineering mindset, 3) organizing product and service integration vs. separated services and product organizations, and 4) exploratory innovation in solutions vs. exploitative innovation in product manufacturing. Moreover, the study identifies nine practices that manufacturing companies apply when coping with the paradoxical challenges that emerge during servitization. The findings may help manufacturing companies understand, accept, and address paradoxical challenges and balance tensions, as not all tensions can be resolved. The identification of these paradoxes allows us to understand the difficulties that manufacturing companies face during the servitization process and may help explain the servitization-deservitization trend among some manufacturing companies that some recent studies have identified.

  • Managing digital servitization toward smart solutions: Framing the connections between technologies, business models, and ecosystems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 105, s. 253-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The present study extends the discussion on product manufacturers' digital servitization toward smart solutions by outlining and reviewing the existing literature on digital servitization and smart solutions. We focus on potential configurations based on technologies, business models, and ecosystems to understand how this transition can be managed through the process of reconfiguration. We define smart solutions as an advanced state of product-service-software systems, and we use moving vehicles as a case in point. We base our discussion on a configurational research approach, examining the role of advanced technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence), novel business models, and modern ecosystems (e.g., platforms and innovation ecosystems) in shaping digital servitization toward smart and autonomous solutions. We identify gaps in the literature, offer an analytical framework, suggest avenues for future research, and contribute by laying the theoretical foundations and proposing managerial directions for a digital servitization journey toward smart solutions. By so doing, we present the papers accepted to the current IMM special issue on “Moving toward autonomous solutions: The role of Product-Service-Software Systems”, which this review article introduces.
