  • The e-MERGE Survey (e-MERLIN Galaxy Evolution Survey): overview and survey description
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 495:1, s. 1188-1208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an overview and description of the e-MERGE Survey (e-MERLIN Galaxy Evolution Survey) Data Release 1 (DR1), a large program of high-resolution 1.5-GHz radio observations of the GOODS-N field comprising similar to 140 h of observations with enhanced-Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) and similar to 40 h with the Very Large Array (VLA). We combine the long baselines of e-MERLIN (providing high angular resolution) with the relatively closely packed antennas of the VLA (providing excellent surface brightness sensitivity) to produce a deep 1.5-GHz radio survey with the sensitivity (similar to 1.5 mu Jy beam(-1)), angular resolution (0.2-0.7 arcsec) and field-of-view (similar to 15x15 arcmin(2)) to detect and spatially resolve star-forming galaxies and active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z greater than or similar to 1. The goal of e-MERGE is to provide new constraints on the deep, sub-arcsecond radio sky which will be surveyed by SKA1-mid. In this initial publication, we discuss our data analysis techniques, including steps taken to model in-beam source variability over an similar to 20-yr baseline and the development of newpoint spread function/primary beam models to seamlessly merge e-MERLIN and VLA data in the uv plane. We present early science results, including measurements of the luminosities and/or linear sizes of similar to 500 galaxies selected at 1.5 GHz. In combination with deep Hubble Space Telescope observations, we measure a mean radio-to-optical size ratio of r(e-MERGE)/r(HST) similar to 1.02 +/- 0.03, suggesting that in most high-redshift galaxies, the similar to GHz continuum emission traces the stellar light seen in optical imaging. This is the first in a series of papers that will explore the similar to kpc-scale radio properties of star-forming galaxies and AGN in the GOODS-N field observed by e-MERGE DR1.

  • Communication : Direct evidence for sequential dissociation of gas-phase Fe(CO)(5) via a singlet pathway upon excitation at 266 nm
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 146:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We prove the hitherto hypothesized sequential dissociation of Fe(CO)(5) in the gas phase upon photoexcitation at 266 nm via a singlet pathway with time-resolved valence and core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with an x-ray free-electron laser. Valence photoelectron spectra are used to identify free CO molecules and to determine the time constants of stepwise dissociation to Fe(CO)(4) within the temporal resolution of the experiment and further to Fe(CO)(3) within 3 ps. Fe 3p core-level photoelectron spectra directly reflect the singlet spin state of the Fe center in Fe(CO)(5), Fe(CO)(4), and Fe(CO)(3) showing that the dissociation exclusively occurs along a singlet pathway without triplet-state contribution. Our results are important for assessing intra- and intermolecular relaxation processes in the photodissociation dynamics of the prototypical Fe(CO)(5) complex in the gas phase and in solution, and they establish time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy as a powerful tool for determining the multiplicity of transition metals in photochemical reactions of coordination complexes.

  • The VLBA CANDELS GOODS-North Survey -I. survey design, processing, data products, and source counts
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 529:3, s. 2428-2442
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past decade has seen significant advances in wide-field cm-wave very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), which is timely given the wide-area, synoptic survey-driven strategy of major facilities across the electromagnetic spectrum. While wide-field VLBI poses significant post-processing challenges that can severely curtail its potential scientific yield, man y dev elopments in the km-scale connected-element interferometer sphere are directly applicable to addressing these. Here we present the design, processing, data products, and source counts from a deep (11 μJy beam -1 ), quasi-uniform sensitivity, contiguous wide-field (160 arcmin 2 ) 1.6 GHz VLBI surv e y of the CANDELS GOODS-North field. This is one of the best-studied extragalactic fields at milli-arcsecond resolution and, therefore, is well-suited as a comparative study for our Tera-pixel VLBI image. The derived VLBI source counts show consistency with those measured in the COSMOS field, which broadly traces the AGN population detected in arcsecond-scale radio surv e ys. Ho we ver, there is a distinctive flattening in the S 1.4GHz ∼100-500 μJy flux density range, which suggests a transition in the population of compact faint radio sources, qualitatively consistent with the excess source counts at 15 GHz that is argued to be an unmodelled population of radio cores. This surv e y approach will assist in deriving robust VLBI source counts and broadening the disco v ery space for future wide-field VLBI surv e ys, including VLBI with the Square Kilometre Array, which will include new large field-of-view antennas on the African continent at ≲1000 km baselines. In addition, it may be useful in the design of both monitoring and/or rapidly triggered VLBI transient programmes.

  • Interference in the angular distribution of photoelectrons in superimposed XUV and optical laser fields
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 46:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected during the ionization of Ne atoms by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) free-electron laser radiation in the presence of an intense near infrared (NIR) dressing field was investigated experimentally and theoretically. A highly nonlinear process with absorption and emission of more than ten NIR photons results in the formation of numerous sidebands. The amplitude of the sidebands varies strongly with the emission angle and the angular distribution pattern reveals clear signatures of interferences between the different angular momenta for the outgoing electron in the multi-photon process. As a specific feature, the central photoelectron line is characterized at the highest NIR fields by an angular distribution, which is peaked perpendicularly to both the XUV and NIR polarization directions. Experimental results are reproduced by a theoretical model based on the strong field approximation.

  • Identifying active galactic nuclei via brightness temperature with sub-arcsecond international LOFAR telescope observations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 515:4, s. 5758-5774
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and isolating their contribution to a galaxy's energy budget is crucial for studying the co-evolution of AGNs and their host galaxies. Brightness temperature (T-b) measurements from high-resolution radio observations at GHz frequencies are widely used to identify AGNs. Here, we investigate using new sub-arcsecond imaging at 144 MHz with the International LOFAR Telescope to identify AGNs using T-b in the Lockman Hole field. We use ancillary data to validate the 940 AGN identifications, finding 83 percent of sources have AGN classifications from SED fitting and/or photometric identifications, yielding 160 new AGN identifications. Considering the multiwavelength classifications, brightness temperature criteria select over half of radio-excess sources, 32 percent of sources classified as radio-quiet AGNs, and 20 percent of sources classified as star-forming galaxies. Infrared colour-colour plots and comparison with what we would expect to detect based on peak brightness in 6 arcsec LOFAR maps imply that the star-forming galaxies and sources at low flux densities have a mixture of star-formation and AGN activity. We separate the radio emission from star-formation and AGN in unresolved, T-b-identified AGNs with no significant radio excess and find the AGN comprises 0.49 +/- 0.16 of the radio luminosity. Overall, the non-radio excess AGNs show evidence for having a variety of different radio emission mechanisms, which can provide different pathways for AGNs and galaxy co-evolution. This validation of AGN identification using brightness temperature at low frequencies opens the possibility for securely selecting AGN samples where ancillary data are inadequate.

  • Few-photon multiple ionization of Ne and Ar by strong free-electron-laser pulses
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 98:20, s. 203001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few-photon multiple ionization of Ne and Ar atoms by strong vacuum ultraviolet laser pulses from the free-electron laser at Hamburg was investigated differentially with the Heidelberg reaction microscope. The light-intensity dependence of Ne2+ production reveals the dominance of nonsequential two-photon double ionization at intensities of I < 6x10(12) W/cm(2) and significant contributions of three-photon ionization as I increases. Ne2+ recoil-ion-momentum distributions suggest that two electrons absorbing "instantaneously" two photons are ejected most likely into opposite hemispheres with similar energies.
