  • An Interoperability Classification Framework for Method Chunk Repositories
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Advances in Information Systems Development: New Methods and Practice for the Networked Society. - Boston, MA : Springer. - 9780387708010 - 9780387708027 ; , s. 153-166
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The competitiveness and efficiency of an enterprise is dependent on its ability to interact with other enterprises and organisations. In this context interoperability is defined as the ability of business processes as well as enterprise software and applications to interact. Interoperability remains a problem and there are numerous issues to be resolved in different situations. We propose method engineering as an approach to organise interoperability knowledge in a method chunk repository. In order to organise the knowledge repository we need an interoperability classification framework associated to it. In this paper we propose a generic architecture for a method chunk repository, elaborate on a classification framework and associate it to some existing bodies of knowledge. We also show how the proposed framework can be applied in a working example.

  • Conceptual Modeling : 41st International Conference, ER 2022, Hyderabad, India, October 17–20, 2022, Proceedings
  • 2022
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are pleased to welcome you to the proceedings of the 41st edition of the International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2022), which took place during October 17–20, 2022. Originally, the conference was planned to take place in the beautiful city of Hyderabad, India, but due to the uncertain COVID-19 situation it was finally held virtually. The ER conference series aims to bring together researchers and practitioners building foundations of conceptual modeling and/or applying conceptual modeling in a wide range of software engineering fields. Conceptual modeling has never been more important in this age of uncertainty. As individuals, organizations, and nations face new and unexpected challenges, software and data must be developed that can cope with and help address this new uncertainty in an ever-faster changing world. Conceptual modeling can be used to describe, understand, and cope with increasing levels of uncertainty in our world. Conference topics of interest include the theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, modeling languages, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective implementations.

  • Data-Driven Agile Requirements Elicitation through the Lenses of Situational Method Engineering
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 IEEE 29th International Requirements Engineering Conference (RE). - : IEEE. - 9781665428569 ; , s. 402-407
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ubiquitous digitalization has led to the continuous generation of large amounts of digital data, both in organizations and in society at large. In the requirements engineering community, there has been a growing interest in considering digital data as new sources for requirements elicitation, in addition to stake-holders. The volume, dynamics, and variety of data makes iterative requirements elicitation increasingly continuous, but also unstructured and complex, which current agile methods are unable to consider and manage in a systematic and efficient manner. There is also the need to support software evolution by enabling a synergy of stakeholder-driven requirements elicitation and management with data-driven approaches. In this study, we propose extension of agile requirements elicitation by applying situational method engineering. The research is grounded on two studies in the business domains of video games and online banking.

  • Situational Method Engineering
  • 2014
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • While previously available methodologies for software – like those published in the early days of object technology – claimed to be appropriate for every conceivable project, situational method engineering (SME) acknowledges that most projects typically have individual characteristics and situations. Thus, finding the most effective methodology for a particular project needs specific tailoring to that situation. Such a tailored software development methodology needs to take into account all the bits and pieces needed for an organization to develop software, including the software process, the input and output work products, the people involved, the languages used to describe requirements, design, code, and eventually also measures of success or failure. The authors have structured the book into three parts. Part I deals with all the basic concepts, terminology and overall ideas underpinning situational method engineering. As a summary of this part, they present a formal meta-model that enables readers to create their own quality methods and supporting tools. In Part II, they explain how to implement SME in practice, i.e., how to find method components and put them together and how to evaluate the resulting method. For illustration, they also include several industry case studies of customized or constructed processes, highlighting the impact that high-quality engineered methods can have on the success of an industrial software development. Finally, Part III summarizes some of the more recent and forward-looking ideas. This book presents the first summary of the state of the art for SME. For academics, it provides a comprehensive conceptual framework and discusses new research areas. For lecturers, thanks to its step-by-step explanations from basics to the customization and quality assessment of constructed methods, it serves as a solid basis for comprehensive courses on the topic. For industry methodologists, it offers a reference guide on features and technologies to consider when developing in-house software development methods or customising and adopting off-the-shelf ones.

  • Classifying Interoperability Problems for a Method Chunk Repository
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Enterprise Interoperability II. - London : Springer. - 9781846288579 - 9781846288586 ; , s. 315-326
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes the structure of a so-called method chunk repository that contains instructions on how to solve interoperability problems between organizations and their information systems. We detail how interoperability problems and their solutions should be tagged in order to match them. The combination of such tagged interoperability problem classifiers forms the language to express meaningful statements about the situation in which certain method chunks are applicable to solve an observed problem.

  • KYKLOS - A modeling method and tool for managing changing capabilities in organizations
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The environments within which modern organizations are operating are characterized by constantly increasing volatility and diversity, which act as a driving force that continuously presents opportunities and threats to the organizations. The result of this situation is that these environments have become so dynamic that the phenomenon of organizational change is slowly becoming the new constant, rather than being an exception as in earlier years. The challenges arising from the need to handle constant change and evolution naturally lead to changing organizational capabilities. Information systems, as one aspect of an organization, can provide efficient support for the design and analysis of capabilities, and enterprise modeling can facilitate the development of specialized methods for this task. Hitherto, a plethora of capability modeling methods exist, providing a wide spectrum of perspectives. However, the support provided for managing the phenomenon of changing organizational capabilities remains limited, since existing methods have omitted to capture the elements necessary to depict organizational capabilities in motion and the motivations triggering such transitions. In addition, managing change requires more structured approaches, which should be methodologically supported and conceptualized. The goal of this PhD thesis is to develop a capability modeling method, called KYKLOS, that can support organizational change by modeling the changing capabilities of organizations and all the relevant aspects of this phenomenon. This work followed the Design Science Research framework, and started by explicating the problem via a literature review of existing capability meta-models; this was followed by the elicitation of method requirements, drawn from both the existing literature and a case study conducted in the domain of public healthcare in Sweden. Based on these requirements, an initial meta-model was developed, which was then demonstrated using the same case study and evaluated by experts through interviews. This activity resulted in an extension to the initial version of the meta-model, which was then instantiated via a case study conducted in the domain of public arts and culture in Greece. In parallel, the compatibility of other modeling approaches was explored. An extended version of the meta-model was then converted to its final version, which was suitable for the implementation of the modeling language in a tool, using the ADOxx meta-modeling platform. Simultaneously with the development of the tool, the syntax, semantics and procedure of the modeling method were created. The complete method was demonstrated through a case study at a company providing ERP solutions and consulting in Sweden, and the results were used to evaluate the method by two groups representing the stakeholder roles. The thesis contributes towards an improved management of change in organizations through the development of a method and complementary supporting tool, with the capability perspective as the focal point for the design and analysis of organizational change.
