    • Angular correlations between charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV for transverse momentum ranges within 0.5 < P-T,P-assoc < P-T,P-trig < 4 GeV/c. The correlations are measured over two units of pseudorapidity and full azimuthal angle in different intervals of event multiplicity, and expressed as associated yield per trigger particle. Two long-range ridge-like structures, one on the near side and one on the away side, are observed when the per-trigger yield obtained in low-multiplicity events is subtracted from the one in high-multiplicity events. The excess on the near-side is qualitatively similar to that recently reported by the CMS Collaboration, while the excess on the away-side is reported for the first time. The two-ridge structure projected onto azimuthal angle is quantified with the second and third Fourier coefficients as well as by near-side and away-side yields and widths. The yields on the near side and on the away side are equal within the uncertainties for all studied event multiplicity and p(T) bins, and the widths show no significant evolution with event multiplicity or p(T). These findings suggest that the near-side ridge is accompanied by an essentially identical away-side ridge. (c) 2013 CERN. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Measurement of prompt J/psi and beauty hadron production cross sections at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV

    • The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied J/psi production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV through its electron pair decay on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L-int = 5.6 nb(-1). The fraction of J/psi from the decay of long-lived beauty hadrons was determined for J/psi candidates with transverse momentum p(t) > 1,3 GeV/c and rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9. The cross section for prompt J/psi mesons, i.e. directly produced J/psi and prompt decays of heavier charmonium states such as the psi(2S) and chi(c) resonances, is sigma(prompt J/psi) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 8.3 +/- 0.8(stat.) +/- 1.1 (syst.)(-1.4)(+1.5) (syst. pol.) mu b. The cross section for the production of b-hadrons decaying to J/psi with p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 is a sigma(J/psi <- hB) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 1.46 +/- 0.38 (stat.)(-0.32)(+0.26) (syst.) mu b. The results are compared to QCD model predictions. The shape of the p(t) and y distributions of b-quarks predicted by perturbative QCD model calculations are used to extrapolate the measured cross section to derive the b (b) over bar pair total cross section and d sigma/dy at mid-rapidity.

  • Underlying Event measurements in pp collisions at root s=0.9 and 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC

    • We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at root s = 0 : 9 and 7 TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p(T),L-T in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions collect the fragmentation products of the hardest partonic interaction. The Transverse region is expected to be most sensitive to the Underlying Event activity. The study is performed with charged particles above three different p(T) thresholds: 0.15, 0.5 and 1.0 GeV/c. In the Transverse region we observe an increase in the multiplicity of a factor 2-3 between the lower and higher collision energies, depending on the track p(T) threshold considered. Data are compared to PYTHIA 6.4, PYTHIA 8.1 and PHOJET. On average, all models considered underestimate the multiplicity and summed p(T) in the Transverse region by about 10-30%.

  • High-performance self-compacting concrete with recycled coarse aggregate : Soft-computing analysis of compressive strength

    • The growth of cities and industrialization has led to an increase in demand for concrete, resulting in resource depletion and environmental issues. Sustainable alternatives such as using recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and industrial waste have been proposed to meet construction material demands while adhering to building codes and promoting sustainability. However, compressive strength (CS) is a crucial property of concrete, and the design parameters have different effects on CS for various grades. Recently, researchers have focused on partially replacing natural coarse aggregate (NCA) with RCA in concrete to achieve sustainability goals. This study aims to examine the influence of design parameters (w/c: water-cement ratio, w/b: water-binder ratio, A/c: total aggregate-cement ratio, FA/CA: fine-coarse aggregate ratio, SP: superplasticizer, w/s: water-solid ratio and RCA%) on concrete CS and address controversies in the insights gained from pairwise comparisons using Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) analysis. Additionally, five techniques (M5P, RF, SVM, LR, and ANNs) were used to predict the CS of high-performance self-compacting concrete (HP-SCC) with RCA, and the results were compared with an ANNs-based model as was the commonly used one in literature. The approaches were assessed based on their accuracy measured using correlation coefficient (CC), mean absolute error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), Scatter index (SI), and comprehensive measure (COM) indicators. Accordingly, the analysis indicated that SVM-PUK-based model is the most appropriate and effective technique to predict the CS of HP-SCC for the given datasets, with CC = 0.894, 0.900, MAE = 1.721, 3.813, RMSE = 5.137, 6.306, and MAPE = 4.5%, 7.6% for the training and testing stages, respectively. The uncertainty analysis results were 21%, 20.7%, 19%, 22%, and 19% for M5P, RF, SVM, LR, and ANN-based models, respectively, whereby all of them were under threshold of 35%. Moreover, according to sensitivity analysis, w/c, w/b, and w/s variables influences the most on CS prediction, while the RCA(%) variable has the least impact.

    • Persistent respiratory tract inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of various chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. These inflammatory respiratory diseases have been a major public health concern as they are the leading causes of worldwide mortality and morbidity, resulting in heavy burden on socioeconomic growth throughout these years. Although various therapeutic agents are currently available, the clinical applications of these agents are found to be futile due to their adverse effects, and most patients remained poorly controlled with a low quality of life. These drawbacks have necessitated the development of novel, alternative therapeutic agents that can effectively improve therapeutic outcomes. Recently, nutraceuticals such as probiotics, vitamins, and phytochemicals have gained increasing attention due to their nutritional properties and therapeutic potential in modulating the pathological mechanisms underlying inflammatory respiratory diseases, which could ultimately result in improved disease control and overall health outcomes. As such, nutraceuticals have been held in high regard as the possible alternatives to address the limitations of conventional therapeutics, where intensive research are being performed to identify novel nutraceuticals that can positively impact various inflammatory respiratory diseases. This review provides an insight into the utilization of nutraceuticals with respect to their molecular mechanisms targeting multiple signaling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory respiratory diseases.

  • A Bi-based artificial interphase to achieve ultra-long cycling life of Al-metal anode in non-aqueous electrolyte

    • Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (RAB) with Al-metal anode are regarded as cost-effective and environmentally sustainable energy storage systems. However, tapping the high volumetric capacity of the Al-anode has been a challenge because of the spontaneous and irreversible formation of the oxide layer on its surface that renders it electrochemically inactive. Though recently reported AlCl3-based electrolytes overcome this problem by breaking down this oxide layer, their highly corrosive nature hampers commercialization. Here, we investigate a novel approach to protect the Al-anode from severe oxidation by engineering an artificial protective interphase. A unique and less corrosive combination of Al(CF3SO3)3 salt and BiCl3 additive reacts with the Al-anode intrinsically to form an inorganic-rich protective bilayer. This layer is electronically insulating and significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance and surface activation energy at the anode, enabling plating/stripping at extremely low overpotential of <0.1 V that can be sustained for record-long cycling times of >4000 h.

  • Additive-Driven Interfacial Engineering of Aluminum Metal Anode for Ultralong Cycling Life

    • Rechargeable Al batteries (RAB) are promising candidates for safe and environmentally sustainable battery systems with low-cost investments. However, the currently used aluminum chloride-based electrolytes present a significant challenge to commercialization due to their corrosive nature. Here, we report for the first time, a novel electrolyte combination for RAB based on aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate (Al(OTf)(3)) with tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) additive in diglyme. The presence of a mere 0.1 M of TBAC in the Al(OTf)(3) electrolyte generates the charge carrying electrochemical species, which forms the basis of reaction at the electrodes. TBAC reduces the charge transfer resistance and the surface activation energy at the anode surface and also augments the dissociation of Al(OTf)(3) to generate the solid electrolyte interphase components. Our electrolyte's superiority directly translates into reduced anodic overpotential for cells that ran for 1300 cycles in Al plating/stripping tests, the longest cycling life reported to date. This unique combination of salt and additive is non-corrosive, exhibits a high flash point and is cheaper than traditionally reported RAB electrolyte combinations, which makes it commercially promising. Through this report, we address a major roadblock in the commercialization of RAB and inspire equivalent electrolyte fabrication approaches for other metal anode batteries.

  • The global abundance of tree palms

    • AimPalms are an iconic, diverse and often abundant component of tropical ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical forests and reduce uncertainty about these ecosystems under climate change.LocationTropical and subtropical moist forests.Time periodCurrent.Major taxa studiedPalms (Arecaceae).MethodsWe assembled a pantropical dataset of 2,548 forest plots (covering 1,191 ha) and quantified tree palm (i.e., ≥10 cm diameter at breast height) abundance relative to co‐occurring non‐palm trees. We compared the relative abundance of tree palms across biogeographical realms and tested for associations with palaeoclimate stability, current climate, edaphic conditions and metrics of forest structure.ResultsOn average, the relative abundance of tree palms was more than five times larger between Neotropical locations and other biogeographical realms. Tree palms were absent in most locations outside the Neotropics but present in >80% of Neotropical locations. The relative abundance of tree palms was more strongly associated with local conditions (e.g., higher mean annual precipitation, lower soil fertility, shallower water table and lower plot mean wood density) than metrics of long‐term climate stability. Life‐form diversity also influenced the patterns; palm assemblages outside the Neotropics comprise many non‐tree (e.g., climbing) palms. Finally, we show that tree palms can influence estimates of above‐ground biomass, but the magnitude and direction of the effect require additional work.ConclusionsTree palms are not only quintessentially tropical, but they are also overwhelmingly Neotropical. Future work to understand the contributions of tree palms to biomass estimates and carbon cycling will be particularly crucial in Neotropical forests.

  • Hydrological responses to future climate change in semi-arid region of Iran (Golabar and Taham Basins, Zanjan Province)

    • One of the most challenging and warning issues that have globally been introduced is the climate change and its effects on water resources. Climate change due to global warming has increased temperature and evaporation potential and has changed the precipitation pattern as well as precipitation amount in different seasons. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of climate change on the hydrological response of the basins of Golabar and Taham (in Zanjan province, Iran) in two future periods 2020–2030 and 2046–2065.10 different Global Climate Models (GCM) were analyzed to introduce novel selected model for future climate projections. The future climate parameters were simulated using the best climate model under the A1B and B1 emission scenarios. Two pessimistic and optimistic future climatic scenarios were defined based on the worst and the most desirable climate condition (using the temperature and precipitation data). The results showed that in the pessimistic scenario, the average annual temperature will rise 1.77 °C and 2.19 °C in Golabar and Taham basins, respectively. For the annual precipitation, reduction of 6.49 and 3.75 percent is shown for the Golabar and Taham basins, respectively. Also, in the average annual river flow, Golabar and Taham basins will experience a decrease of more than 25 percent in the future period (2046–2065). In the optimistic scenario, Golabar and Taham basins will experience 0.29 °C and 0.51 °C increase in the average annual temperature, respectively. In the annual precipitation, 3.6 and 7.01 percent increase is shown for the Golabar and Taham basins, respectively. In the average annual river flow, an increase of 7 % and 15 % would be expected in the future period (2020–2030) for the Golabar and the Taham basins, respectively.
