    • This paper summarises the mechanical construction and installation of the Tile Calorimeter for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in CERN, Switzerland. The Tile Calorimeter is a sampling calorimeter using scintillator as the sensitive detector and steel as the absorber and covers the central region of the ATLAS experiment up to pseudorapidities +/- 1.7. The mechanical construction of the Tile Calorimeter occurred over a period of about 10 years beginning in 1995 with the completion of the Technical Design Report and ending in 2006 with the installation of the final module in the ATLAS cavern. During this period approximately 2600 metric tons of steel were transformed into a laminated structure to form the absorber of the sampling calorimeter. Following instrumentation and testing, which is described elsewhere, the modules were installed in the ATLAS cavern with a remarkable accuracy for a structure of this size and weight.

    • The Tile Calorimeter, covering the central region of the ATLAS experiment up to pseudorapidities of +/-1.7, is a sampling device built with scintillating tiles that alternate with iron plates. The light is collected in wave-length shifting (WLS) fibers and is read out with photomultipliers. In the characteristic geometry of this calorimeter the tiles lie in planes perpendicular to the beams, resulting in a very simple and modular mechanical and optical layout. This paper focuses on the procedures applied in the optical instrumentation of the calorimeter, which involved the assembly of about 460,000 scintillator tiles and 550,000 WLS fibers. The outcome is a hadronic calorimeter that meets the ATLAS performance requirements, as shown in this paper.

  • Internet addiction and sleep quality among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic : A multinational cross-sectional survey

    • Background The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of many people, including medical students. The present study explored internet addiction and changes in sleep patterns among medical students during the pandemic and assessed the relationship between them. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out in seven countries, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Guyana, India, Mexico, Pakistan, and Sudan, using a convenience sampling technique, an online survey comprising demographic details, information regarding COVID-19, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Results In total, 2749 participants completed the questionnaire. Of the total, 67.6% scored above 30 in the IAT, suggesting the presence of an Internet addiction, and 73.5% scored equal and above 5 in the PSQI, suggesting poor sleep quality. Internet addiction was found to be significant predictors of poor sleep quality, causing 13.2% of the variance in poor sleep quality. Participants who reported COVID-19 related symptoms had disturbed sleep and higher internet addiction levels when compared with those who did not. Participants who reported a diagnosis of COVID-19 reported poor sleep quality. Those living with a COVID-19 diagnosed patient reported higher internet addiction and worse sleep quality compared with those who did not have any COVID-19 patients in their surroundings. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that internet addiction and poor sleep quality are two issues that require addressing amongst medical students. Medical training institutions should do their best to minimize their negative impact, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Geophysical investigation of the down-dip extension of the Lombador massive sulphide deposit, Neves-Corvo, Portugal

    • The 150 Mt Lombador massive sulphide deposit is one of the seven known deposits of the Neves-Corvo mine. The deposit dips approximately 30o-35o to the NE and is open down dip, with current exploitation reaching down at 1 km depth. To investigate the possible downwards continuation of the deposit, a 1D constrained inversion of time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) ground loop data was conducted, followed by 3D electromagnetic (EM) forward modeling and a constrained 3D gravimetric inversion over the same area. To perform the EM and gravity modeling/inversion, a 3D geologic model was built using a density database comprising of approximately 300 drill-holes, and an electrical conductivity database with measurements from resistivity surveys and 1D inversion of the TEM data. The EM modeling shows that the Neves Formation shales are a regional conductive layer extending down to approximately 1.6 km depth in the Lombador area. This layer, often topped by massive sulphides, has an average density of 2.83 g/cm(3), whereas stockwork and massive sulphide reach on average 3.1 g/cm(3) and 4.5 g/cm(3), respectively. The 3D constrained gravity inversion results do not support the hypothesis of the presence of massive sulphides located in the down-dip direction of the Lombador deposit in the immediate vicinity of the known deposit. The lack of spatial resolution of the gravity grid, the study area limited size and the lack of information from within the basement suggest further studies are required to confirm the presence and amount of stockwork mineralization down-dip the Lombador deposit inside the Neves-Formation or the Phyllite-Quartzite basement.

  • Cross-cultural prevalence of sleep quality and psychological distress in healthcare workers during COVID-19 pandemic

    • Background: Poor quality sleep and emotional disturbances are expected in times of crisis. COVID-19 has severely impacted healthcare worldwide and with that comes the concern about its effects on healthcare workers. The purpose of the present study was to assess sleep quality and psychological distress in healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: The present work is a multi-centric cross-sectional study targeting healthcare workers from India, Pakistan, and Nepal. It used an online version of the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and the General Health Questionnaire, and data were analyzed using SPSS V.24.Results: A total of 1790 participants completed the questionnaire. Of the 1790 participants, 57% reported poor sleep quality, and 10% reported a high level of psychological distress. A cross-cultural comparison found some differences between the different groups of participants. The details of the differences were further explored in the article.Conclusion: The present study highlights that a significant proportion of healthcare workers are affected by poor sleep quality and psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also emphasizes the imperative to provide them with psychosocial support to avoid potential short- and long-term psychological consequences of these troubling times.

  • DNA gel nanoparticles: preparation and controlling the size

    • A simple and novel method was used for the preparation of nano-/micro-sized DNA gel particles by nebulisation of a solution of DNA (single-or double-stranded) into an oppositely charged surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) or protein (lysozyme, protamine sulfate) solution. The size and size distribution of the particle populations were investigated by means of fluorescence microscopy (FM), photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Particles measuring from 0.1 to 10 mu m were obtained. FM studies suggest that the formation of the particles was carried out with conservation of the secondary structure of the nucleic acid molecules. SEM on freeze-dried and Au-shadowed samples showed a distribution of virtually spherical particles. It was found that, in addition to the size of the initial DNA droplets, the cationic agent is a controlling parameter of the particle size.

  • Mixed Protein Carriers for Modulating DNA Release

    • Aqueous mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes undergo associative phase separation, resulting in coacervation, gelation, or precipitation. This phenomenon has been exploited in forming DNA gel particles by interfacial diffusion. We report here the formation of DNA gel particles by mixing solutions of double-stranded DNA with aqueous solutions containing two cationic proteins, lysozyme and protamine sulfate. The effect of the lysozyme/protamine ratio on the degree of DNA entrapment, surface morphology, swelling-deswelling behavior, and kinetics of DNA release has been investigated. By mixing the two proteins, we obtain particles that display higher loading efficiency and loading capacity values, in comparison to those obtained in single-protein systems. Examination of the release profiles has shown that in mixed protein particles, complex, dual-stage release kinetics is obtained. The overall release profile is dependent on the lysozyme/protamine ratio. The obtained profiles, or segments of them, are accuratelly fitted using the zero-order and first-order models, and the Weibull function. Fluorescence microscopy studies have suggested that the formation of these particles is associated with the conservation of the secondary structure of DNA. This study presents a new platform for controlled release of DNA from DNA gel particles Conned by interfacial diffusion.

    • The actinorhizal tree Casuarina glauca tolerates extreme environmental conditions, such as high salinity. This species is also able to establish a root-nodule symbiosis with N-2-fixing bacteria of the genus Frankia. Recent studies have shown that C. glauca tolerance to high salt concentrations is innate and linked to photosynthetic adjustments. In this study we have examined the impact of increasing NaCl concentrations (200, 400 and 600 mM) on membrane integrity as well as on the control of oxidative stress in branchlets of symbiotic (NOD+) and non-symbiotic (KNO3+) C. glauca. Membrane selectivity was maintained in both plant groups at 200 mM NaCl, accompanied by an increase in the activity of antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase and catalase). Regarding cellular membrane lipid composition, linolenic acid (C18:3) showed a significant decline at 200 mM NaCl in both NOD+ and KNO3+ plants. In addition, total fatty acids (TFA) and C18:2 also decreased in NOD+ plants at this salt concentration, resulting in malondialdehyde (MDA) production. Such initial impact at 200 mM NaCl is probably due to the fact that NOD+ plants are subjected to a double stress, i.e., salinity and low nitrogen availability. At 400 mM NaCl a strong reduction of TFA and C18:3 levels was observed in both plant groups. This was accompanied by a decrease in the unsaturation degree of membrane lipids in NOD+. However, in both NOD+ and KNO3+ lipid modifications were not reflected by membrane leakage at 200 or 400 mM, suggesting acclimation mechanisms at the membrane level. The fact that membrane selectivity was impaired only at 600 mM NaCl in both groups of plants points to a high tolerance of C. glauca to salt stress independently of the symbiotic relation with Frankia.
