    • This article presents a glossary of terms that are frequently used in research onhuman crowds. This topic is inherently multidisciplinary as it includes work in and across computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, psychology and social science, for example. We do not view the glossary presented here as a collection of finalised and formal definitions. Instead, we suggest it is a snapshot of current views and the starting point of an ongoing process that we hope will be useful in providing some guidance on the use of terminology to develop a mutual understanding across disciplines. The glossary was developed collaboratively during a multidisciplinary meeting. We deliberately allowseveral definitions of terms, to reflect the confluence of disciplines in the field. This also reflects the fact not all contributors necessarily agree with all definitions in this glossary.

  • Zombie leadership : Dead ideas that still walk among us

    • Considerable progress has been made in the field of leadership in recent years. However, we argue that this is undermined by a strong residual commitment to an older set of ideas which have been repeatedly debunked but which nevertheless resolutely refuse to die. These, we term zombie leadership. Zombie leadership lives on not because it has empirical support but because it flatters and appeals to elites, to the leadership industrial complex that supports them, and also to the anxieties of ordinary people in a world seemingly beyond their control. It is propagated in everyday discourse surrounding leadership but also by the media, popular books, consultants, HR practices, policy makers, and academics who are adept at catering to the tastes of the powerful and telling them what they like to hear. This review paper outlines eight core claims (axioms) of zombie leadership. As well as isolating the problematic metatheory which holds these ideas together, we reflect on ways in which they might finally be laid to rest.

  • The Context, Content, and Claims of Humiliation in Response to Collective Victimhood

    • This chapter examines the role of humiliation in experiences of collective victimization. Humiliation is conceptualized as a self-conscious emotion that is distinct from shame, anger, and embarrassment. Humiliation is experienced when dehumanizing and devaluing treatment occurs that is appraised as illegitimate. The chapter discusses the paradox in the literature on humiliation, whereby both action (e.g., cycles of violence) and suppression of action (e.g., demobilization of resistance) have been observed as an outcome of humiliation. Drawing on research on the experience of Dalits in the Hindu caste system, a conceptualization of humiliation is presented that is relational, victim centered, and focused on agency and power relations. Humiliation is conceptualized as a claim, which involves both the appraisal of certain acts of victimization as humiliating, and the political act of communicating resentment to the perpetrator. Overall, humiliation can be used to mobilize or demobilize resistance to oppression.

  • The EASP Diversity Report : Round Table Discussion

    • EASP is committed to promote and support all types of diversity within the association—gender, geographic, thematic, and methodological—and to facilitate a supportive and inclusive environment for members from a diverse membership. To ensure this goal is achieved, the Executive Committee has commissioned an analysis of the past and present situation regarding diversity within the organization across all our activities (awards, grants, meetings, etc.). A Diversity Working Party (WP) has collected and analyzed existing data to determine whether there is a need for more systematic analyses into barriers to and facilitators of diversity in EASP. In this GM session, the WP presents and discusses key findings from this project. The results include analyses of membership over time broken down by geography, gender, age, and level; data on meeting participation, Presidents, EC members, prize winners, meeting organizers, and journal editors/associate editors/editorial boards broken down by the same categories plus (where appropriate) thematic and methodological approach. The audience is invited to participate in a discussion of conclusions and practical proposals for increasing the diversity within the organization.
