  • Networking for sustainable supplier development : evidence from a Finnish industrial cluster
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Safety. - : Sociedade Portuguesa de Segurança e Higiene Ocupacionais. - 2184-0954 .- 2184-0954. ; 4:2, s. 22-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines a network approach to sustainably developing suppliers in the context of a Finnish industrial cluster. The approach (HSEQ AP) aims to assess and develop the health, safety, environmental and quality-related capabilities of the suppliers of the buying companies that form the cluster. In this study, the impact of this approach, which has been operating for more than a decade, is examined through a mixed-methods approach. Suppliers that have been audited two times or more (n = 29) were quantitatively analyzed in terms of safety performance, consecutive assessment scores and the relationship between assessment scores and financial indicators. To support the quantitative analyses, interviews were conducted with buyers and suppliers. The results suggest that the HSEQ AP can be linked to improvement in operational results and to enhancing social sustainability in the supply network, and that the suppliers and buyers generally find it a worthy investment. The antecedents for this network approach are partially similar to supplier development in general: Buyer demonstration of commitment, particularly through purchasing processes, is crucial and not fully realized in all cases. The use of a competent, trained third-party assessor was seen to bring value, and the suppliers also rated buyer participation very highly. Interestingly, no significant improvement was found regarding environmental capabilities. The HSEQ AP can be viewed as a CSR practice, but the results show there could be further potential to unlock.

  • Dynamic Capabilities in Supply Chain Resilience Management in the Finnish Energy Industry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal for Quality Research. - : Center for Quality University of Montenegro, Center for Quality University of Kragujevac Serbia, International Association for Quality and Quality of Life Research. - 1800-6450 .- 1800-7473. ; 17:4, s. 1061-1084
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last two years, industrial companies have faced unexpected global crises whilst simultaneously they are going through a transformation process with the aim of increasing renewable energy usage. To maintain competitiveness in a changing business environment, dynamic capabilities are needed in supply chain resilience (SCRes) management to proactively identify threats, respond agilely and implement change. This study aimed to identify what kinds of dynamic capabilities and microfoundations are needed in SCRes management in the energy industry. The research was conducted at Finnish energy industry companies. Research data from 19 semi-structured interviews were analysed according to the analysis framework of sensing, learning, integrating and coordinating. Eight microfoundations in the energy industry were identified. From those network collaboration, open communication and knowledge sharing, systematic supplier relationship management (SRM) and leadership were identified as key microfoundations for dynamic capabilities that affect sensing, learning, integrating and coordinating.

  • Buyer Networking in Supplier HSEQDevelopment – A Macroergonomics Analysisin a CSR Framework
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 21st Congress of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA 2021). - Cham : Springer. ; , s. 552-559
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Process industries focus on their core processes whilst certain activities are bought as outsourced services from a variety of suppliers. Corporate social responsibility highlights the need to manage and develop suppliers’ HSEQ capabilities. This study focuses on large Finnish industrial companies’ HSEQ cluster, and its’ actions for supplier development. This study includes interviews for large Finnish industrial companies and a database analysis on a sample of supplier audit reports. A macroergonomics analysis is conducted to show how the observations made in the audits, i.e. identified development topics or deviations, are of internal origin and mainly identify issues related to suppliers’ management processes and health and safety performance. In addition, suppliers’ own stakeholder management practices and processes were questioned in some cases. This study shows that this current HSEQ assessment practice by the cluster somewhat strongly identifies issues related to CSR. Yet, some development topics and future research aspects are identified that could help in tying the assessment procedure better with CSR. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

  • Delivery truck drivers’ and stakeholders’ video-assisted analyses of work outside the truck cabs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainable Transportation. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1556-8318 .- 1556-8334. ; 9:4, s. 254-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Delivery truck drivers' work outside their cabs involves various occupational risks and hazards. Drivers and other stakeholders identified 202 ergonomic discomforts and hazardous work situations in video material of this work. The aim was to determine the types of situations identified and differences between the groups. Most of the identified situations concerned manual materials handling or movement. Their nature varied significantly between the groups. It can be concluded that the participation of different stakeholder groups increases the amount and diversity of relevant information obtained. This approach can be used in holistic risk prevention to increase sustainability and well-being at work.

  • Delivery truck drivers work outside their cabs : ergonomic video analyses supplemented with national accident statistics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - : Wiley. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 25:3, s. 340-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Delivery truck drivers' work contains various physically and psychosocially demanding work situations. Fifteen drivers' and 8 other stakeholders' identifications of such work situations were examined by video analyses in this study. The identifications were analyzed in-depth by the researchers and compared with statistics on 3,507 accidents in the Finnish trucking industry. The aim was to determine what kind of identifications were made and to what degree the identifications coincided among the participants and with the accident statistics. The drivers' identifications differed from the statistics data. The statistics showed a significantly higher relative frequency of movement-related situations. However, the identifications also included risks for future workload-related musculoskeletal disorders. Most commonly, these were emphasized during manual materials handling. The participation of different interest groups seems to increase the amount of relevant information obtained. Nonetheless, the age of the evaluator seems not to affect the analyses.

  • Participatory video-assisted evaluation of truck drivers€™ work outside cab : deliveries in two types of transport
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1080-3548 .- 2376-9130. ; 20:3, s. 477-489
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to identify risks and ergonomics discomfort during work of local and short haul delivery truck drivers outside a cab. The study used a video- and computer-based method (VIDAR). VIDAR is a participatory method identifying demanding work situations and their potential risks. The drivers' work was videoed and analysed by subjects and ergonomists. Delivery truck drivers should not be perceived as one group with equal risks because there were significant differences between the 2 types of transportation and specific types of risks. VIDAR produces visual material for risk management processes. VIDAR as a participatory approach stimulates active discussion about work-related risks and discomfort, and about possibilities for improvement. VIDAR may be also applied to work which comprises different working environments.

  • Risk factors contributing to truck drivers€™ non-driving occupational accidents
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 48:2, s. 183-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify various individual factors and combinations thereof that can contribute to truck drivers' occupational accidents, particularly connected to work performed outside the cab in various work environments.Design/methodology/approach In total, 74 accidents were analysed through in-depth interviews with truck drivers. These interviews were conducted employing the critical incident technique, and analysed utilising a qualitative content analysis approach.Findings The contributing factors identified were categorised into 14 categories. In all, 13 of these were grouped into four sections reflecting the drivers' work outside the cab: Goods and equipment, Loading/unloading area, Loading/unloading tasks, and Organisation. A single risk factor was associated with 40 accidents while the other 34 involved combinations of factors.Research limitations/implications Although the tasks performed by truck drivers in different countries are probably similar, one limitation might be that all the accidents characterised occurred in one country: Sweden.Practical implications The findings reveal that complex combinations of risk factors often contribute to accidents. In addition to the transportation company itself, other stakeholders, such as clients, and designers and manufacturers of technology, may influence the occupational safety of truck drivers. Different stakeholders who could contribute to managerial decision making that is designed to prevent accidents are identified and discussed.Originality/value This investigation contributes to an in-depth understanding of the causes of accidents in the transportation industry. The findings are discussed from the perspective of the stakeholders and safety management in an attempt to identify key stakeholders who can improve accident prevention.

  • Delivery truck drivers work outside the cab : psychosocial discomforts and risks based on participatory video analyses
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Transport Research Review. - : Springer Nature. - 1867-0717 .- 1866-8887. ; 10:2, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Delivery truck drivers face various physical and psychosocial discomforts and risks in their work. Psychosocial perceptions are linked to physiological and psychological loads—strain and stress—affecting drivers throughout various mechanisms within activities and conditions. In this study, participatory video-assisted analyses were utilised for identifying psychosocially demanding work situations that delivery truck drivers encounter outside the cab. Methods: Identifications were made by the drivers from previously recorded videos of their own work in their daily work environments. In addition, other stakeholders, such as managers and designers, also identified situations. The video identification data were further processed by the researchers, showing differences between the perceptions of the drivers and stakeholders on the causal conditions and intervening conditions behind the discomfort identifications. Results: All together 99 identified situations—over half (53%) of which included a fear of causing different types of undesired events with risks of losses, such as human injuries or material damages. The results showed not only do risks and discomforts exist in demanding work situations, which seemed relevant, but they also indicated the importance of involving different stakeholders. Conclusions: This study provides a unique methodological approach, as video observations and analyses and qualitative data analysis are combined to provide more in-depth data with visualizations into risk management processes.
