    • Robots have been successfully deployed within bomb squads all over the world for decades. Recent technical improvements are increasing the prospects to achieve the same benefits also for other high risk professions. As the number of applications increase issues of collaboration and coordination come into question. Can several groups deploy the same type of robot? Can they deploy the same methods? Can resources be shared? What characterizes the different applications? What are the similarities and differences between different groups? This paper reports on a study of four areas in which robots are already, or are about to be deployed: Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT), Military and Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Military Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear contamination control (CBRN), and Fire Fighting (FF). The aim of the study has been to achieve a general overview across the four areas to survey and compare their similarities and differences. It has also been investigated to what extent it is possible for the them to deploy the same type of robot. It was found that the groups share many requirements, but, that they also have a few individual hard constrains. A comparison across the groups showed the demands of man-portability, ability to access narrow premises, and ability to handle objects of different weight to be decisive; two or three different sizes of robots will be needed to satisfy the need of the four areas.

    • The armed forces have a considerable amount of experience in using robots for bomb removal and mine clearing. Emerging technology also enables the targeting of other applications. To evaluate if real deployment of new technology is justified, tactical advantages gained have to be compared to drawbacks imposed. Evaluation calls for realistic tests which in turn require methods dictating how to deploy the new features. The present study has had two objectives: first, to gain a comprehensive view of a potential user of man-portable robots; second, to embed a robot system with users for assessment of present technology in real deployment. In this project we investigated an army company specialized in urban operations performing their tasks with the support of the iRobot Packbot Scout. The robot was integrated and deployed as an ordinary piece of equipment which required modifying and retraining a number of standard behaviors. The reported results were acquired through a long-term test ranging over a period of six months. This paper focuses on the characteristics of the users and their current ways of operation; how the robot was implemented and deployed. Additionally, this paper describes benefits and drawbacks from the users' perspective. A number of limitations in current robot technology are also identified. The findings show that the military relies on precise and thoroughly trained actions that can be executed with a minimum of ambiguity. To make use of robots, new behavioral schemes, which call for tactical optimization over several years, are needed. The most common application during the trials was reconnaissance inside buildings with uncertain enemy presence when time was not critical. Deploying the robot took more time than completing the task by traditional means, but in return kept the soldiers out of harm's way and enabled them to decrease weapon deployment. The range of the radio link, limited video feedback, and the bulky operator control unit were the features constraining the system's overall performance the most. On the other hand, did properties of the system, such as ruggedness, size, weight, terrain ability, and endurance, prove to match the application. The users were of the opinion that robots such as the Packbot Scout would be a valuable standard feature in urban intervention.

    • The military have a considerable amount of experience from using robots for mine clearing and bomb removal. As new technology emerges it is necessary to investigate the possibly to expand robot use. This study has investigated an Army company, specialized in urban operations, while fulfilling their tasks with the support of a PackBot Scout. The robot was integrated and deployed as an ordinary component of the company and included modifying and retraining a number of standard behaviors to include the robot. This paper reports on the following issues: evaluation of missions where the platform can be deployed, what technical improvements are the most desired, and what are the new risks introduced by use of robots? Information was gathered through observation, interviews, and a questionnaire. The results indicate the robot to be useful for reconnaissance and mapping. The users also anticipated that the robot could be used to decrease the risks of IEDs1 by either triggering or by neutralising them with a disruptor2. The robot was further considered to be useful for direct combat if armed, and for placing explosive loads against, for example, a door. Autonomous rendering of maps, acquiring images, two-way audio, and improved sensing such as IR were considered important improvements. The robot slowing down the pace of the unit was considered to be the main risk when used in urban operations.

    • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients often undergo allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) in first complete remission (CR). We examined the effect of depth of clinical response, including incomplete count recovery (CRi) and/or measurable residual disease (MRD), in patients from the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplantation Research (CIBMTR) registry. We identified 2492 adult patients (1799 CR and 693 CRi) who underwent alloHCT between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2015. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). Multivariable analysis was performed to adjust for patient-, disease-, and transplant-related factors. Baseline characteristics were similar. Patients in CRi compared to those in CR had an increased likelihood of death (HR: 1.27; 95% confidence interval: 1.13-1.43). Compared to CR, CRi was significantly associated with increased non-relapse mortality (NRM), shorter disease-free survival (DFS), and a trend toward increased relapse. Detectable MRD was associated with shorter OS, shorter DFS, higher NRM, and increased relapse compared to absence of MRD. The deleterious effects of CRi and MRD were independent. In this large CIBMTR cohort, survival outcomes differ among AML patients based on depth of CR and presence of MRD at the time of alloHCT. Further studies should focus on optimizing post-alloHCT outcomes for patients with responses less than CR.

    • Two aspects were evaluated of an approach to produce inkjet printed electrical connections in a roll-to-roll application. In the first part it was demonstrated that inkjet printing with silver nanoparticles allows to connect LED dies embedded in a flexible polymeric substrate by way of electrical via connections and to operate the LED dies at their nominal 20 mA and 3 V driving conditions. A standard convection oven process was used to sinter the inkjet printed tracks. The second part of the work focused on identifying sinter technologies that provide the required fast processing times needed for roll-to-roll applications. IR irradiation, Rapid Electrical Sintering, and Broadband Photonic Curing were evaluated and compared with Convective Oven Sintering as benchmark technique. All these techniques produced similar track conductivities. Fastest operation was obtained with Broadband Photonic Curing, which enabled a total process time of three seconds as compared with 150°C and 30 min in the convection oven.

    • The role of androgen receptor-mediated androgen action on bone was investigated in testicular feminized male (Tfm) mice. Cortical bone was found to be unresponsive to testosterone (T) in orchidectomized Tfm mice, whereas cortical thickness as well as trabecular BMD and structure were fully maintained by T in the corresponding Tabby control mice. These data show an essential role for androgen receptor-mediated androgen action in periosteal bone formation. INTRODUCTION: Androgens can affect the male skeleton both directly-through activation of the androgen receptor (AR)-and indirectly-through stimulation of estrogen receptors after aromatization. We assessed the importance of AR-mediated androgen action on bone in a mouse model of androgen resistance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight-week-old androgen-resistant testicular feminized male (Tfm) and Tabby control mice were orchidectomized (ORX) and treated for 4 weeks with a slow-release testosterone (T) pellet (delivering 167 microg/day) or a placebo pellet. A comprehensive analysis of the skeletal effects of androgen deficiency and replacement was performed using histomorphometry, QCT, and biochemical assessment of bone turnover. RESULTS: As expected, T increased trabecular BMD, volume, number, and width in ORX Tabby mice. In ORX Tfm mice, however, T had less effect on trabecular BMD and no effect on trabecular bone structure. T action on trabecular bone was associated with opposite changes in bone turnover: trabecular and endocortical bone turnover and serum levels of osteocalcin were all reduced by T in ORX Tabby mice, but not in ORX Tfm mice. T also increased cortical thickness (+16%), area, and density in ORX Tabby mice, but not in Tfm mice, resulting in greater bone strength in the Tabby control strain. The positive effects of T on cortical bone reflected a stimulatory effect on periosteal bone formation (+137%), which was again absent in Tfm mice. CONCLUSIONS: These data show that, in male mice, AR-mediated T action is essential for periosteal bone formation and contributes to trabecular bone maintenance.

    • Despite political efforts, diffuse pollution from agriculture continues to be the single largest source of nitrogen (N) emissions into the aquatic environment in many countries and regions. This fact, and the recent enactment of a new Swedish environmental code, led to the design of a study targeted at the evaluation of new N pollution abatement strategies. An actor game was chosen as the key component of the study, with a focus on four major goals: to test the implementability of legally binding environmental quality standards for nitrate concentration in groundwater and N transport to the sea, to find sets of agriculturally feasible and cost-effective measures to decrease N loads, to investigate the possibilities for collective action through negotiated and institutionalized actor cooperation, and to investigate the role of mathematical modeling in environmental N management. Characteristics from the agriculturally dominated catchment of Genevadsan (224 km(2)) on the southwest coast of Sweden served as the playing field for the actor game. The most noteworthy result from the study was that it appeared to be possible to meet ambitious environmental N standards with less economically drastic measures than anticipated by most of the participants. The actor game was shown to be a good method for learning about the new Swedish environmental code and its application and for gaining deeper insight into the issues of N management. In addition, the actor game functioned as an arena for gaining a more thorough understanding of the views of different stakeholders.
