  • En enkätstudie av HRM-praktiker i små företag
  • 2020

  • HRM work and open innovation: evidence from a case study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resource Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0958-5192 .- 1466-4399. ; 34:10, s. 1940-1972
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a framework for firm use of HRM when engaging in open innovation. Whereas open innovation has gained wide recognition in the innovation management field, as firms open their boundaries to knowledge inflow and outflow to advance innovation, very few empirical papers link the HRM literature to this phenomenon. We base our analysis on an exploratory qualitative study of the pharmaceutical corporation AstraZeneca and its implementation of an open innovation initiative called BioVentureHub. We identify three main areas of HRM work: inbound, outbound, and coupled HRM work. Furthermore, we illustrate how these HRM activities relate to the development of the open innovation initiative and to current HRM and open innovation literature. The framework identifies HRM activities that target not only internal employees, but also external human resources engaged in the open innovation initiative. This HRM work is mainly conducted through informal means, separate from the host corporation's business as usual. Our empirical study contributes to the limited and mainly conceptual research connecting open innovation with HRM, increasing our knowledge of how corporations use HRM work to manage open innovation initiatives in practice.

  • Open Innovation Climate Measure: The introduction of a validated scale
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Creativity and Innovation Management. - : Wiley. - 0963-1690 .- 1467-8691. ; 20:4, s. 284-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open innovation describes how organizations open up their innovation processes for external influence and collaboration. Despite this recent, and increasingly popular, development in the industry as well as in academic literature, the field lacks valid assessment tools. As a supportive organizational climate is argued to be a crucial element for successful implementation of open innovation, we propose in this paper Open Innovation Climate Measure (OICM). This three-dimensional assessment tool is tested in three units located in a multinational automotive corporation in the process of incorporating open innovation principles in practice.

  • Open Innovation in Practice: Diffusion of Knowledge and Use in Swedish Bio-Pharmaceutical Firms
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - 1751-0252. ; 8:2, s. 137-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of open innovation has successfully diffused among academicians and policy makers, framing innovation work in the post-bureaucratic era. Much of its initial theorising is built on single case studies of early adopters, but there is still a lack of quantitative studies in specific industries and geographical contingencies. In this paper, we report the results of a survey on open innovation (N = 114 firms), targeting the Swedish bio-pharmaceutical industry. The purpose is to shed light on how widespread the knowledge and practical utilisation of open innovation activities actually are in a particular industry. We find that very few respondents were aware of the open innovation concept, and also that open innovation related activities are, to a large extent, integrated within the ordinary innovation practices. At the same time, the application of open innovation activities relates to whether the firm has an innovation strategy,

  • Open innovation in SMEs: a study of the Swedish bio-pharmaceutical industry
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0827-6331 .- 2169-2610. ; 28:2, s. 169-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to discuss how small and middle-sized enterprises (SMEs) utilize open innovation in practice. Open innovation has become a well-used rhetorical concept among key bio-pharmaceutical spokespersons, suggesting that it would help to renew the stagnated industry. We report a survey (N = 104) on Swedish SMEs in the bio-pharmaceutical industry, where we shed light on how widespread the knowledge and practical uses of open innovation activities actually are. The findings not only show that very few respondents are aware of the open innovation concept, but also that open innovation-related activities are to a large extent integrated within their ordinary innovation practices. The study also suggests that firms that are engaged in open innovation activities tend to be more innovation-productive than those who do not. Based on these findings, we propose that there is a casual relation between open innovation and entrepreneurial growth, in which open innovation activities can act as accelerators for entrepreneurial growth. At the same time, much ‘openness’ is still performed on informal and ad-hoc basis by SMEs in the industry.

  • Structuring of the Open Innovation Field
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Technology Management & Innovation. - 0718-2724. ; 8:3, s. 173-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open Innovation is considered a ‘hot’ concept in research as well as in industry practice. At the same time, at least two critiques have been raised against the notion: that it is based on old theories and that the term is vague and non-precise. Based on a bibliometrical analysis, this conceptual paper structures the emerging field of open innovation into two interrelated perspectives; the firm perspective and the ecosystem perspective. By that, it introduces an integrated framework for open innovation and shows how various concepts under the umbrella of open innovation are related to each other. A discussion is presented on how the two perspectives relate to earlier innovation management literature and how they are linked by ‘new’ interaction approaches, such as toolkits, innovation contests, crowdsourcing, and innovation intermediaries.

  • Vad är ett öppet innovationsklimat?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Öppen innovation : i teori och praktik / Nicolette Lakemond & Fredrik Tell (red.). - Lund : Studentlitteratur. - 9789144112428 ; , s. 257-272

  • Employee participation and job satisfaction in SMEs: Investigating strategic exploitation and exploration as moderators
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resource Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0958-5192 .- 1466-4399. ; 33:16, s. 3197-3223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study introduces three forms of employee participation in decision making in SMEs (work role, HR, and strategic) and tests two competing hypotheses regarding their positive and negative relationships with one aspect of employee wellbeing, namely job satisfaction. It further explores if one internal boundary condition – firms’ exploitation and exploration – moderates the three participation-satisfaction relationships. Using multilevel data collected from top managers and employees in Swedish SMEs, the results support positive connotations of participation, with work role participation having the strongest relationship with employee job satisfaction. The results additionally highlight the role of firms’ explorative orientation as an internal boundary condition for the three participation-satisfaction relationships. Specifically, the positive relationships of work role and strategic participation forms with job satisfaction were stronger under high levels of exploration. Surprisingly, participation in HR issues related negatively to satisfaction under the same conditions. The study advances HRM-SME research by discussing these findings, highlighting their implications for practitioners in SMEs, and proposing avenues for future research.
