    • An organic electronic paper display technology (see Figure and also inside front cover) is presented. The electrochromic display cell together with the addressing electrochemical transistor form simple smart pixels that are included in matrix displays, which are achieved on coated cellulose-based paper using printing techniques. The ion-electronic technology presented offers an opportunity to extend existing use of ordinary paper.

    • Two series of chalcogen substituted thiophene monomers have been synthesised; 3-(4-alkylchalcogenophenyl)thiophenes 1a-c and 3-(4-alkylphenylchalcogeno)thiophenes 2a-d. Polymerisations of examples of these with iron(III)chloride gave regiorandom polymers. Light-emitting diodes with low efficiency could be fabricated from poly-1a and poly-1b.

    • Novel electrochemical transistors, based on the conductive polymer PEDOT, operating at driving voltages of only a few volts in bulk material, and with little demand on substrate planarity, are described by the authors. The underlying polymer ion pair PEDOT:PSS is conductive in both oxidized and reduced state. Two transistor architectures, a bi-stable and a dynamic transistor (the first electrochemical specimen of its kind) with an on/off ratio of 105 and 200 Hz modulation speed, were realized.

    • Two new ethylenedithio substituted thiophenes (I; R = H, Br) have been synthesized. Starting from I (R = Br), oligomers II (n = 0, 1, 2) were synthesized. Their cyclic voltammetric behavior and electronic structure (by UV-Vis) have been recorded. Low oxidn. potentials and small differences between first and second oxidn. potential were found. In the UV-Vis spectra large red shifts compared to other end-capped oligomers were obsd. [on SciFinder(R)]

  • Synthesis of extended thiophene systems : materials for electronical and optical applications

    • In this thesis the synthesis and some material properties ofdifferent extended thiophene systems have been studied. One ofthe areas studied is the synthesis of methyl- and methylthiosubstituted dithienothiophene donors and their abilities toform cation radieal- and charge transfer salts. It was foundthat they were poor candidates showing low tendency to formCrystals of good quality. The conductivities measured oncompressed pellets were found to be in the order of 10-6- 10-2S/cm. The crystal structure of one of the cationradieal salts, (2,3,5,6-tetramethyldithieno[3,2-b:2',3'd]thiophene)2PF6was solved and showed clearly how the bulkymethylgroups prevent close packing in the Crystals explainingthe low conductivity ( 10-6S/cm2). Attempts to synthesize the correspondingbis(ethylenedichalcogen)dithienothiophenes to achieve betterCrystal packing have so far been unsuccessful, but resulted inuseful building blocks, (2,3-ethylenedithio)thiophene ED'IT,and (1,4-thioxano)thiophene TOT, for end-capped oligomers.Starting from EDTT and TOT, series of end-cappedoligomers bEDTnT and TOnT were synthesized. They were found toform stable cation radieals and showed red-shifted UV-VISabsorptions.In an attempt to make LED-devices with enhancedefficiencies, a new serie of heteroatom substituted monomersfor polythiophenes was synthesized.

  • Patterning polythiophene films using electrochemical over-oxidation

    • Over-oxidative degradation of polythiophenes, which breaks the conjugation and destroys the electronic conductivity of the polymer, is well documented as a liability in these materials. We use this 'weakness', via controlled electrochemical over-oxidation, in a novel subtractive patterning technique compatible with high-speed reel-to-reel printing technology. We demonstrate the use of electrochemical over-oxidation to pattern PEDOT:PSS films via an x–y plotter, silk-screen and high-resolution photolithographic techniques, resulting in patterning down to a resolution of 2 µm and a conduction contrast between unpatterned and patterned areas of up to 108.
