  • Performance of Quantized Massive MIMO with Fronthaul Rate Constraint over Quasi-Static Channels
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - 2169-3536 .- 2169-3536. ; 11, s. 56935-56950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We provide a rigorous framework for characterizing and numerically evaluating the error probability achievable in the uplink and downlink of a fully digital quantized multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We assume that the system operates over a quasi-static channel that does not change across the finite-length transmitted codewords, and only imperfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the base station (BS) and at the user equipments. The need for the novel framework developed in this paper stems from the fact that, for the quasi-static scenario, commonly used signal-to-interference-and-distortion-ratio expressions that depend on the variance of the channel estimation error are not relatable to any rigorous information-theoretic achievable-rate bound. We use our framework to investigate how the performance of a fully digital massive MIMO system subject to a fronthaul rate constraint, which imposes a limit on the number of samples per second produced by the analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters (ADCs and DACs), depends on the number of BS antennas and on the precision of the ADCs and DACs. In particular, we characterize, for a given fronthaul constraint, the trade-off between the number of antennas and the resolution of the data converters, and discuss how this trade-off is influenced by the accuracy of the available CSI. Our framework captures explicitly the cost, in terms of spectral efficiency, of pilot transmission—an overhead that the outage capacity, the classic asymptotic metric used in this scenario, cannot capture. We present extensive numerical results that validate the accuracy of the proposed framework and allow us to characterize, for a given fronthaul constraint, the optimal number of antennas and the optimal resolution of the converters as a function of the transmitted power and of the available CSI.

  • Sparse Array Synthesis Including Mutual Coupling for MU-MIMO Average Capacity Maximization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. - 0018-926X .- 1558-2221. ; In Press, s. 1-1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A hybrid optimization algorithm including mutual coupling (MC) is proposed to synthesize an irregular sparse array (ISA) for average capacity maximization in a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system. The hybrid approach is composed of two phases to sub-optimally determine the location of a fixed number of omni-directional thin dipole antennas in an arbitrary sparse aperture via a diagonal antenna selection matrix. In Phase I, the problem is relaxed to a convex optimization by ignoring the MC and weakening the constraints. The output of Phase I is accounted as a reliable initial guess for the genetic algorithm (GA) in Phase II, which incorporates the MC effects through the coupling matrix and avoids the convex relaxation technique. The proposed approach outperforms the conventional GA with a random initial population, while it avoids trying several starting positions. Meanwhile, the undesirable appearance of grating lobes, due to the under-sampling, and the degrading MC effects are suppressed by aperiodicity. It is observed that, doubling the conventional inter-element spacing (half-wavelength) and finding the location of eight dipoles in a sparse aperture by the proposed method improves the average capacity by 3.27-11.9% when the number of users varies from two to eight and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 30dB.

  • MCRB-based Performance Analysis of 6G Localization under Hardware Impairments
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops, ICC Workshops 2022. ; , s. 115-120
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Location information is expected to be the key to meeting the needs of communication and context-aware services in 6G systems. User localization is achieved based on delay and/or angle estimation using uplink or downlink pilot signals. However, hardware impairments (HWIs) distort the signals at both the transmitter and receiver sides and thus affect the localization performance. While this impact can be ignored at lower frequencies where HWIs are less severe, modeling and analysis efforts are needed for 6G to evaluate the localization degradation due to HWIs. In this work, we model various types of impairments and conduct a misspecified Cramér-Rao bound analysis to evaluate the HWI-induced performance loss. Simulation results with different types of HWIs show that each HWI leads to a different level of degradation in angle and delay estimation performance.

  • Modeling and Analysis of OFDM-based 5G/6G Localization under Hardware Impairments
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - 1558-2248 .- 1536-1276. ; In press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Localization is envisioned as a key enabler to satisfy the requirements of communications and context-aware services in the fifth/sixth generation (5G/6G) communication systems. User localization can be achieved based on delay and angle estimation using uplink/downlink pilot signals. However, hardware impairments (HWIs) (such as phase noise and mutual coupling) distort the signals at both the transmitter and receiver sides and thus affect the localization performance. While this impact can be ignored at lower frequencies with less severe HWIs, and less stringent localization requirements, modeling and analysis efforts are needed for high-frequency bands to assess degradation in localization accuracy due to HWIs. In this work, we model various types of impairments for a mmWave multiple-input-multiple-output communication system and conduct a misspecified Cramér-Rao bound analysis to evaluate HWI-induced performance losses in terms of angle/delay estimation and the resulting 3D position/orientation estimation error. We also investigate the effect of individual and overall HWIs on communications in terms of symbol error rate (SER). Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that each type of HWI leads to a different level of degradation in angle and delay estimation performance, and the prominent impairment factors on delay estimation will have a dominant negative effect on SER.

  • An extended kalman filter framework for joint phase noise, CFO and sampling time error estimation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, PIMRC. ; 2020-August
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a framework for joint estimation and compensation of three major oscillator impairments, namely sampling time error (STE), carrier frequency offset (CFO) and phase noise (PN). In particular, we model these impairments as Wiener processes and introduce a pilot-aided approach which facilitates their joint estimation. The proposed solution is carried out in two steps: first, an initial estimation of the transmitted symbols is acquired by applying an extended Kalman filter (EKF) on the pilot symbols and then, a second EKF is applied on the estimated symbols which yields an accurate tracking of STE, PN and CFO over an additive white Gaussian noise channel. Our numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed solution.

  • Amplitude Varying Phased Array Linearization
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2020 50th European Microwave Conference, EuMC 2020. ; , s. 348-351
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new optimization technique for amplitude-varying phased array digital predistortion (DPD) is presented. The new technique improves the linearization compared to the conventional phased array DPD techniques as the amplitude variation increases across the array. The measurement results indicate that linearization can change the adjacent channel power (ACP) pattern leading to increased ACP in the sidelobes. This sheds light on the trade-off between the main beam and side-lobes levels in the ACP pattern under different DPD techniques. We evaluate total radiated ACP or integrated ACP (IACP) and peak of ACP (PACP). We show that slight amplitude variation improves the IACP and PACP. However, as the amplitude variation increases, IACP of phased array with DPD is worsened compared to phased array without DPD.

  • Intra-Array Coupling Estimation for MIMO Transceivers Utilizing Blind Over-The-Air Measurements
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest. - : IEEE. - 0149-645X. ; 2019-June, s. 468-471
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new technique for the estimation of coupling between array elements in MIMO transceivers is presented. The estimation method is founded on subsequent transmission and over-the-air (OTA) reception between the array elements, when the transmitter's characteristics are unknown. The method enables accurate on-line characterization of the behavior of the array in terms of coupling for a complete system with PAs and antennas connected. The method is validated via OTA measurements on a four-element array in a MIMO transmitter configuration. The results demonstrate that the estimated couplings with the proposed technique are similar to the ones obtained from S-parameter measurements with deviations reflecting the operation with antennas and PAs connected. The proposed intra-array coupling estimation facilitates practical OTA measurement-based modeling and linearization of MIMO transmitters.

  • Single Digital Predistortion Technique for Phased Array Linearization
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems. - 0271-4310. - 9781728103976 ; 2019-May
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a novel and effective linearization technique for nonlinear phased array antennas. For large phased arrays, linearization of the array using a single digital predistortion (DPD) is inevitable since one digital path is upconverted and feeds several RF transmission paths, each of which is connected to a power amplifier (PA) and an antenna element. However, a critical issue is that the PA characteristics can vary considerably within an array. Thus, linearizing individual PAs with one DPD is rather challenging. We formulate and solve an optimization problem that corresponds to jointly minimizing the maximum residuals between the input to the array and the output of individual PAs. We demonstrate that the proposed technique outperforms state-of-the-art linearization solutions while retaining the linear gain of the array.

  • An additive noise modeling technique for accurate statistical study of residual RF hardware impairments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops, ICC Workshops 2019 - Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hardware impairments are the inevitable limiting factors in radio frequency communication systems, and in particular in mm-wave, the impairments can severely affect system performance. In this paper, we propose an additive noise modeling technique for modeling and analyzing the residual hardware impairments, more accurately than previously done in the literature. We analyze the effects of joint residual phase noise and IQI in both transmitter and receiver by using additive noise modeling as a representation method and indicate how other impairments can be described in the same framework. We derive the signal to distortion plus noise ratio (SDNR) for both the joint and the individual effects of impairments and validate the formulations with simulations which also acknowledge the usefulness of the additive noise modeling as a mean for accurate hardware impairments study.
