  • Dietary patterns, food groups and myocardial infarction: a case-control study
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Br J Nutr. - 0007-1145. ; 98:2, s. 380-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Certain dietary patterns may be related to the risk of CVD. We hypothesised that a plant-centred dietary pattern would be associated with a reduced risk of first myocardial infarction (MI). A case-control study of Norwegian men and postmenopausal women (age 45-75 years) was performed. A FFQ was administered, generally within 3 d after incident MI (n 106 cases). Controls (n 105) were frequency matched on sex, age and geographic location. On the FFQ, 190 items were categorised into thirty-five food groups and an a priori healthy diet pattern score was created. We estimated OR using logistic regression with adjustment for energy intake, family history of heart disease, marital status, current smoking, education and age. Among food groups, the risk of MI was significantly higher per SD of butter and margarine (OR 1.66 (95 % CI 1.12, 2.46)), and lower per SD of tomatoes (OR 0.53 (95 % CI 0.35, 0.79)), high-fat fish (OR 0.57 (95 % CI 0.38, 0.86)), wine (OR 0.58 (95 % CI 0.41, 0.83)), salad (OR 0.59 (95 % CI 0.40, 0.87)), whole grain breakfast cereals (OR 0.64 (95 % CI 0.45, 0.90)), cruciferous vegetables (OR 0.66 (95 % CI 0.47, 0.93)) and non-hydrogenated vegetable oil (OR 0.68 (95 % CI 0.49, 0.95)). An abundance of cases were found to have a low a priori healthy diet pattern score. A dietary pattern emphasising nutrient-rich plant foods and high-fat fish and low in trans fatty acids was associated with decreased risk of MI among Norwegians.

  • Relationship between sensorial and physical characteristics of topical creams : A comparative study on effects of excipients
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Pharmaceutics. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0378-5173 .- 1873-3476. ; 613
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rising consumer demands for safer, more natural, and sustainable topical products have led to increased interest in finding alternative excipients, while retaining functionality and cosmetic appeal. Particle-stabilized Pickering creams have emerged as possible alternatives to replace traditional surfactant-stabilized creams and are thus one of the focuses in this study. The aim of this paper was to study relationships between sensorial characteristics and physical properties to understand how different excipients affect these aspects, comparing one starch particle–stabilized and three surfactant-stabilized formulations. A human panel was used to evaluate sensorial perception, while physical properties were deduced by rheology and tactile friction, together with in vivo and ex vivo skin hydration measurements. The results show that sensorial attributes related to the application phase can be predicted with rheology, while afterfeel attributes can be predicted with tactile friction studies. Differences in rheological and sensory properties among surfactant-based creams could mainly be attributed to the type of emollients used, presence of thickeners and surfactant composition. Differences between surfactant-based creams and a Pickering cream were more evident in relation to the afterfeel perception. Presence of starch particles in the residual film on skin results in high tactile friction and low perception of residual coating, stickiness, greasiness, and slipperiness in sensorial afterfeel. © 2021 The Authors

  • Tactile friction of topical creams and emulsions : Friction measurements on excised skin and VitroSkin® using ForceBoard™
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Pharmaceutics. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0378-5173 .- 1873-3476. ; 615
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tactile perception can be investigated through ex vivo friction measurements using a so–called ForceBoard™, providing objective assessments and savings in time and money, compared to a subjective human panel. In this work we aim to compare excised skin versus VitroSkin® as model substrates for tactile friction measurements. A further aim is to detect possible differences between traditional surfactant-based creams, and a particle-stabilized (Pickering) cream and investigate how the different substrates affect the results obtained. It was found that the difference in tactile friction between excised skin and VitroSkin® was small on untreated substrates. When topical creams were applied, the same trends were observed for both substrates, although the frictional variation over time relates to the difference in surface structure between the two substrates. The results also confirmed that there is a difference between starch-based Pickering formulations and surfactant-based creams after application, indicating that the latter is greasier than Pickering cream. It was also shown that the tactile friction of Pickering emulsions was consistently high even with high amounts of oil, indicating a non-greasy, and non-sticky formulation. The characteristics of starch-stabilized Pickering formulations make them promising candidates in the development of surfactant-free topical formulations with unique tactile properties. © 2022 The Authors

  • Feeling fine - the effect of topography and friction on perceived roughness and slipperiness
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Biotribology. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2352-5738. ; 11, s. 92-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (1) Background. To design materials with specific haptic qualities, it is important to understand both the contribution of physical attributes from the surfaces of the materials and the perceptions that are involved in the haptic interaction. (2) Methods. A series of 16 wrinkled surfaces consisting of two similar materials of different elastic modulus and 8 different wrinkle wavelengths were characterized in terms of surface roughness and tactile friction coefficient. Sixteen participants scaled the perceived Roughness and Slipperiness of the surfaces using free magnitude estimation. Friction experiments were performed both by participants and by a trained experimenter with higher control. (3) Results and discussion. The trends in friction properties were similar for the group of participants performing the friction measurements in an uncontrolled way and the experiments performed under well-defined conditions, showing that the latter type of measurements represent the general friction properties well. The results point to slipperiness as the key perception dimension for textures below 100 μm and roughness above 100 μm. Furthermore, it is apparent that roughness and slipperiness perception of these types of structures are not independent. The friction is related to contact area between finger and material. Somewhat surprising was that the material with the higher elastic modulus was perceived as more slippery. A concluding finding was that the flat (high friction) reference surfaces were scaled as rough, supporting the theory that perceived roughness itself is a multidimensional construct with both surface roughness and friction components.

  • Intake of dairy fat and dairy products, and risk of myocardial infarction: A case-control study
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0963-7486 .- 1465-3478. ; 59:2, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of dairy fat in the aetiology of myocardial infarction (MI) is controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between intake of dairy fat and dairy products, and risk of a first acute MI. A total of 111 MI patients with a first acute MI and 107 population controls (men and women, age 45-75 years) were studied. Diet was assessed using a 180-item food frequency questionnaire. The MI cases had higher intake of total fat, but lower intake of saturated fat and dairy fat than the control persons. No effect of dairy fat or saturated fat on the odds ratio for MI was observed, however. A significant inverse trend in odds of MI for intake of cheese was observed, but the trend was no longer significant after adjustment for smoking. The results suggest that intake of fat from dairy products may not be associated with increased risk of having a first MI. The healthy control persons had a diet that differed from the diet of the MI patients in many aspects, and dairy products were a part of this diet. This may have protected them from having a first MI.

  • Plasma neurodegeneration biomarker concentrations associate with glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic measures in neurological disorders
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clearance of neurotoxic brain proteins via cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to blood has recently emerged to be crucial, and plasma biomarkers of neurodegeneration were newly introduced to predict neurological disease. This study examines in 106 individuals with neurological disorders associations between plasma biomarkers [40 and 42 amino acid-long amyloid-beta (A beta 40 and A beta 42), total-tau, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light (NfL)] and magnetic resonance imaging measures of CSF-mediated clearance from brain via extra-vascular pathways (proxy of glymphatic function) and CSF-to-blood clearance variables from pharmacokinetic modeling (proxy of meningeal lymphatic egress). We also examine how biomarkers vary during daytime and associate with subjective sleep quality. Plasma concentrations of neurodegeneration markers associate with indices of glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic functions in individual- and disease-specific manners, vary during daytime, but are unaffected by sleep quality. The results suggest that plasma concentrations of neurodegeneration biomarkers associate with measures of glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic function. Plasma neurodegeneration biomarkers are increasingly utilized to predict neurological disease. Here, authors show in different neurological disorders associations between plasma neurodegeneration biomarker concentrations and various measures of glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic functions.

  • Intensity of pituitary adenoma on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging predicts the response to octreotide treatment in newly diagnosed acromegaly
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Clinical Endocrinology. - : Wiley. - 0300-0664 .- 1365-2265. ; 77:1, s. 72-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Primary, preoperative medical treatment is an option in selected patients with acromegaly, but a subset of patients respond poorly. Valid prediction of response to somatostatin analogues (SA) might thus alter treatment stratification. The aims of this study were to assess whether T2 signal intensity could determine long-term response to first-line SA treatment and to assess clinical and biochemical baseline characteristics, as well as histological subtype in relation to the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances. Methods In 45 newly diagnosed patients, T2-weighted signal intensity of the tumour was classified into hypo-, iso- or hyperintense. Biochemical and clinical baseline variables for the three groups were compared. In 25 patients primarily treated with long-acting SA for a median of 6 months [interquartile range (IQR):155180 days], GH and IGF-1 reduction was assessed, and in 34 cases, immunohistochemical granulation pattern was evaluated. Results The results showed that 12 (27%) adenomas were hypointense, 15 (33%) isointense and 18 (40%) hyperintense. Median IGF-1 [ratio IGF-1/ULN; (upper limit of normal)] was 3.5 (2.34.9), 2.9 (2.63.8) and 1.9 (1.32.6), respectively (P = 0.006 for difference between groups). Median GH values (mu g/l) of a 3- to 5-point profile were 17.5 (6.135), 9.3 (6.032.5) and 4.1 (1.58.3), (P = 0.025). Median IGF-1 reduction (% of baseline) after first-line SA treatment was 51 (4970), 36 (1974) and 13 (542) (P = 0.03); median reduction in GH (% of baseline) was 86 (7294), 78 (6285) and 46 (170) (P = 0.02). T2 hyperintensity was associated with sparse granulation pattern on immunohistochemistry. Conclusion In patients with acromegaly, T2 signal intensity at diagnosis correlates with histological features and predicts biochemical outcome of first-line SA treatment.
