  • Evaluation of integration of sustainable development in higher education in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. - : Emerald. - 1467-6370. ; 21:4, s. 685-698
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Since 2006, higher education institutions (HEIs) in Sweden, should according to the Higher Education Act, promote sustainable development (SD). In 2016, the Swedish Government asked the Swedish higher education authority to evaluate how this study is proceeding. The authority chose to focus on education. This paper aims to produce a report on this evaluation. Design/methodology/approach All 47 HEIs in Sweden were asked to write a self-evaluation report based on certain evaluation criteria. A panel was appointed consisting of academics and representatives for students and working life. The panel wrote an evaluation of each HEI, a report on general findings and recommendations, and gave an overall judgement of each HEI in two classes as follows: the HEI has well-developed processes for integration of SD in education or the HEI needs to develop their processes. Findings Overall, a mixed picture developed. Most HEIs could give examples of programmes or courses where SD was integrated. However, less than half of the HEIs had overarching goals for integration of SD in education or had a systematic follow-up of these goals. Even fewer worked specifically with pedagogy and didactics, teaching and learning methods and environments, sustainability competences or other characters of education for SD. Overall, only 12 out of 47 got a higher judgement. Originality/value This is a unique study in which all HEIs in a country are evaluated. This provides unique possibilities for identifying success factors and barriers. The importance of the leadership of the HEIs became clear.

  • Tools to assess the nutritional status of acutely ill older adults.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nursing older people. - 1472-0795. ; 18:5, s. 31-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nurses are responsible for identifying patients who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. They are also expected to follow-up patients' nutritional status and to initiate preventive and caring interventions. The aim of this Swedish study was to explore whether simple assessment tools used during hospital admission could identify older adults at risk of malnutrition.

  • Quality assessment and comparison of grading between examiners and supervisors of Bachelor theses in nursing education.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nurse education today. - : Elsevier BV. - 0260-6917. ; 28:1, s. 24-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study compares supervisors' and examiners' grading of quality of theses at Bachelor level in nursing. An instrument developed to asses the quality of theses was used. Eight aspects of quality were rated. One hundred and fifteen theses were rated by both examiner and supervisor. Significant correlations were found between examiners' and supervisors' ratings of all aspects of quality. Good agreement was found in 89-96% of the ratings on individual aspects of quality. The means of differences between ratings were small but significantly differed from zero in four out of eight aspects. In theses rated low for quality of language and formality, differences between examiners' and supervisors' ratings on all aspects of quality were significantly larger than in theses rated high for quality of language and formality. The general conclusion is that the evaluations made by examiners and by supervisors corresponded well. Differences found indicates that examiners in general give lower scores than supervisors especially on quality aspects that are most closely related to research methods and experiences. This study is part of a larger project that is investigating quality of theses and the student's attitudes and learning experiences of writing theses.

  • Writing a bachelor thesis generates transferable knowledge and skills useable in nursing practice.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education Today. - : Elsevier BV. - 0260-6917 .- 1532-2793. ; 33:11, s. 1406-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Generic skills or transferable skills have been discussed in terms of whether or not skills learned in one context can be transferred into another context. The current study was aimed to explore nurses' self-perceptions of the knowledge and skills they had obtained while writing a Bachelor's thesis in nursing education, their experience of the extent of transfer and utilization in their currentwork. Responding nurses (N=42) had all worked from 1 to 1.5 years after their final examination and had completed a questionnaire that was structured with open-ended questions. Only five nurses reported that they were unable to use any of the knowledge and skills they had obtained from writing a thesis. A majority of the nurses (37/42) could give many examples of the practical application of the skills and knowledge they had obtained. Our findings indicate that writing a thesis as part of an undergraduate degree program plays a major role in the acquisition and development of knowledge and skills which can subsequently be transferred into and utilized in nursing practice

  • Delirium in the elderly. The construction of a rating scale and aspects on risk factors and treatment
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The rates of delirium were studied in patients with four different dementia disorders and also in patients with different regional brain syndromes. The function of the stress-regulating system was compared between demented patients with delirium and those without. The efficacy and side-effects of an atypical neuroleptic drug in the treatment of confusional symptoms, behavioural disturbances and psychotic symptoms in elderly, mostly demented patients were investigated in a pilot study. An instrument for the assessment of changes in symptoms of delirium over time was constructed and evaluated.Delirium occurred in 37% of the demented patients in the absence of any acute somatic disorder. Independently of age and severity ot dementia, delirium was more common in late-onset Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia than in early-onset Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. Delirium was also more common in demented patients with symptoms indicating global impairment of the brain than in those with symptoms indicating more limited brain disorder, independently of severity of the dementia disorder. Thus demented patients with a more global brain disorder seem to be more at risk of developing delirium than those with more localised brain dysfunction. In an investigation of the stress-regulating system in the HPA axis 75% of the demented patients with moderate to severe delirium showed pathological dexamethasone suppression test (DST) responses compared with 33% of those without delirium. Age, post-DST cortisol level and severity of dementia all independently predicted delirium. The results of the investigation indicate that disturbances in the stress-regulating system. may be an important risk factor for delirium.A retrospective pilot study of the efficacy and side-effects of an atypical neuroleptic drug showed that patients with predominant psychomotor hyperactivity and psychotic symptoms benefitted most from the treatment with low doses of the drug.Confusional State Evaluation (CSE), a rating scale for measuring changes in severity of delirium, was developed. The assessment is based mainly on the patient's condition during an interview. The scale consists of 22 items. Scores on 12 of these are summarised to give a ?confusion score?. The validity and inter-rater reliability of the scale was tested and found satisfactory. The scale is useful for evalutation of the efficacy of interventions in demented and non-demented elderly people with delirium.
