  • Frederic Jameson (1984) Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism

  • Ingår i: Classics in Media Theory. - Abingdon, Oxon : Routledge. - 9781040026519 - 9781032557960 ; , s. 297-309
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In his essay ‘Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism’ (1984b), the American literary scholar Frederic Jameson attempts to relate postmodern culture to broader economic, social and political developments. The main thesis is that postmodernism is nothing more than the cultural logic of late capitalism. Jameson analyses a range of contemporary artworks and cultural products and shows how they differ from the art of the modernist era. Where truth, the creative and the individual subject are questioned, concepts such as practices, discourses and intertextual games become important instead. While Jameson’s essay remains relevant as a contemporary diagnosis and for those who want to understand what the term ‘postmodernism’, means, it is interesting above all as a methodological model that shows the possibilities of historicising current trends.

  • Inledning
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Svensk snillrikhet?. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789187351242

  • Vad vilja vegetarianerna? : En undersökning av den svenska vegetarismen 1900–1935
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Throughout human history, some people have chosen to abstain from eating meat – for ethical or religious reasons. But beginning in the mid-19th century, groups and organizations were formed in the West who identified themselves as “vegetarian”. With the establishment of Svenska Vegetariska Föreningen (SVF, or the Swedish Vegetarian Society) in 1903, Sweden became part of this international movement. A central claim in this study is that the formation of vegetarian practices in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century should be understood as an expression of the emerging modern society. The purpose of this study, covering 1900–1935, is to contribute new perspectives and insights concerning vegetarianism in Sweden in the early 20th century. On the one hand, this study examines Swedish vegetarianism as a movement. On the other, attention is drawn to how closely connected it was to vegetarian movements on an international level. The main source material of this study is the Swedish Vegetarian Society’s member magazine Vegetarianen (the Vegetarian), and a variety of writings by Johan L. Saxon who was chair as well as the editor of Vegetarianen. The study shows that early 20th century vegetarianism was not just about excluding meat from one’s diet, it was also characterized by a variety of rules and restrictions. A key word in this is toxins. Meat was considered a toxin and therefore not to be consumed by humans, but it was far from the only toxin. Other toxins that a vegetarian must avoid were alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea and various spices. The vegetarians’ self-perception, expressed in the examined sources, can be summarized as an understanding of themselves as the true core of several related movements, as vegetarianism also encompassed those endeavors. Vegetarians in this way related to the temperance, animal protection, and peace movements in the first instance. Vegetarianism was expected to imply the rejection of killing both animals and humans. As for the relation to the temperance movement, vegetarians understood meat and alcohol to be similar toxins: a vegetarian thus abstained not only from eating meat, but also from imbibing alcohol.

  • Att gjuta en nation : Statyinvigningar och nationsformering i Sverige vid 1800-talets mitt
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study discusses three unveilings of statues in mid 19th century Sweden: Gustavus Adolphus in Gothenburg in 1854, Engelbrekt in Örebro in 1865, and Charles XII in Stockholm in 1868. The main theme of the study is the connection between history and contemporary politics. The unveilings of statues inspired the production of history in a number of different genres. Speeches, plays, poems, popular pieces and scholarly works were all part of the same process. These historical narratives portrayed and framed connections between concepts such as memory, history, the region, the nation, the past and the future. The unveilings of statues provided a public forum for the production of a national history: the narratives produced history for current political purposes. National conceptions were often linked to concrete practices and events. Several mid-19th century projects of political reform were used in this way. Therefore I consider it more adequate to use the notion of nation building, rather than nationalism. My study combines three different perspectives: firstly, a stance on monument history which rejects the modernist view on art, aiming instead to put the statue in its historical context; secondly, a view on the history of public life which sees public events as formative; and thirdly, an ambition to investigate the characteristics of the nation, as presented within the historical context of a 19th century statue unveiling. The purpose of this combination of perspectives is to link the discussion of monuments and public events to a more comprehensive description of the shaping of a nation.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book addresses how historians produce knowledge throughthe act of contextualization. In eleven chapters, the authorsdemonstrate how they proceed to create, interpret, or reinterprethistorical, cultural, and societal contexts. The aim is to stimulatereflection and discussion about what contextualization meansand how it is done. As a practice, contextualization is a crucialelement of all historical studies, whether concerned with language, artifacts, actions, or events. Bringing the reader into the scholarly process of contextualization, demonstrating various ways oftaking on the task, the book invites students as well as established scholars to consider the possibilities contained in a seeminglyordinary aspect of the historian’s work. There will always be newways of making sense of history. This is why historical studies aresuch an important part of the knowledge base of our society.
