- This dissertation is about post-divorce families. The central question is how family is constructed after divorce. The aim is to study how family relationships are negotiated, transformed and reproduced after the separation. The research is based on 24 in-depth interviews with twelve young adults, between the ages of 21 and 29, with divorced parents. Their narratives about their families are analysed using a theoretical framework inspired by the individualization theories (Beck & Beck-Gernsheim 2001; Giddens 1997, 1995) and the doing family perspective (Morgan 1996; Silva & Smart 1999a), especially focusing on the concepts of negotiation and family practices. More specific questions raised in the dissertation are how are family boundaries drawn by the young adults? How do the interviewees understand the new organization of their families, which has been renegotiated after the separation? What perception of motherhood and fatherhood can be found in the narratives? And, finally, to what extent are family relationships after divorce negotiated in the way that the individualization theories claim?The results show a quite complex picture of family life after divorce. While both parents are often described as participating parents, the family practices after divorce appear clearly gendered. The mother’s involvement in taking care of the child seems not to be negotiable in the same way as the father’s. Hence, motherhood appears natural and taken for granted to a much greater extent than fatherhood. The negotiations between the parents after divorce can be of both an explicit and implicit character according to the narratives, but yet another kind of negotiation are the indirect negotiations. In these negotiations, the child is used as a go-between or carrier, a position that seems to limit their own possibility to participate in the decision making. Another aspect that seems to diminish children’s participation is the principle of loyalty to both their biological parents. The results also show that the children’s living arrangements after divorce are characterized by changes and renegotiations rather than being permanent. The parents’ new partners are described in different ways in the narratives, however, they are often seen as turning points that have a major influence on the family relationships. The nuclear family as a normative ideal is present in all the interviews but in different ways. While some express an explicit critique of it, others regard it as something that they want for themselves in the future. What constitutes a family according to the narratives? Firstly, blood ties and formal relationships are pointed out. Secondly, the feeling of solidarity and closeness is viewed perhaps as the most evident element of family life. This feeling can be created by open communication as well as by spending time together on a regular basis. Thirdly, growing up together and/or sharing everyday life practices are also considered as vital to develop and maintain close family ties. This means that the family boundaries after divorce are renegotiated over time rather than permanent. These negotiations take place in a certain context, where gender norms, earlier experiences and other social relationships play an important role.

Influence of Molecular Weight on the Creep Resistance of Almost Molten Polyethylene Blends

- The most common route to improve the creep resistance of low density polyethylene (LDPE) is crosslinking, which however results in volatile decomposition products that must be removed. Blends of LDPE and an additive-like amount of a linear polyethylene are found to offer improved creep resistance. Above the melting temperature of LDPE, T m ≈ 111 °C, a load-bearing network of higher-melting crystallites—connected through tie chains and trapped entanglements—provides additional form stability. The molecular weight of the linear polyethylene is found to be critical for the ability to arrest creep, which is correlated with the probability of tie chain formation as well as cocrystallization of the two polyethylenes. A number of high-density polyethylenes (HDPE) and one ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) are explored. For blends of LDPE and 2 wt% of the linear polyethylene, an HDPE with a weight-average molecular weight M w of 16 kg mol −1 is found to be sufficient to arrest creep at 115 °C. Further improvement in terms of creep resistance is obtained in case of UHMW-PE with creep fracture occurring only at a stress of 12 kPa at 115 °C. (Figure presented.).

Prediction of exposure-driven myelotoxicity of continuous infusion 5-fluorouracil by a semi-physiological pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic model in gastrointestinal cancer patients

- PurposeTo describe 5-fluorouracil (5FU) pharmacokinetics, myelotoxicity and respective covariates using a simultaneous nonlinear mixed effect modelling approach.MethodsThirty patients with gastrointestinal cancer received 5FU 650 or 1000 mg/m2/day as 5-day continuous venous infusion (14 of whom also received cisplatin 20 mg/m2/day). 5FU and 5-fluoro-5,6-dihydrouracil (5FUH2) plasma concentrations were described by a pharmacokinetic model using NONMEM. Absolute leukocyte counts were described by a semi-mechanistic myelosuppression model. Covariate relationships were evaluated to explain the possible sources of variability in 5FU pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.ResultsTotal clearance of 5FU correlated with body surface area (BSA). Population estimate for total clearance was 249 L/h. Clearances of 5FU and 5FUH2 fractionally changed by 77%/m2 difference from the median BSA. 5FU central and peripheral volumes of distribution were 5.56 L and 28.5 L, respectively. Estimated 5FUH2 clearance and volume of distribution were 121 L/h and 96.7 L, respectively. Baseline leukocyte count of 6.86 × 109/L, as well as mean leukocyte transit time of 281 h accounting for time delay between proliferating and circulating cells, was estimated. The relationship between 5FU plasma concentrations and absolute leukocyte count was found to be linear. A higher degree of myelosuppression was attributed to combination therapy (slope = 2.82 L/mg) with cisplatin as compared to 5FU monotherapy (slope = 1.17 L/mg).ConclusionsBSA should be taken into account for predicting 5FU exposure. Myelosuppression was influenced by 5FU exposure and concomitant administration of cisplatin.

- For further investigations in the field of artificial photosynthesis, a model compound, 1, has been developed to mimic the electron-transfer steps from the manganese cluster to P680+ in photosystem II. In this model compound the photosensitizer ruthenium(II)-trisbipyridyl was linked to a manganese(II) ion through a bridging ligand. Photoexcitation of 1 in the presence of the electron acceptor methyl viologen (MV2+) lead to electron transfer from the Ru moiety to MV2+. Laser flash photolysis experiments at different concentrations of 1 were performed in order to follow the subsequent reduction of the photooxidized Ru(III) species. A kinetic model, taking different parallel reactions into account, could explain the experimental data. It was shown that the major part of the photooxidized Ru(III) created was reduced again by intramolecular electron transfer from the attached Mn(II), with a rate constant of 1.8 × 105 s-1. However, Mn(II) was partially dissociated from 1, giving a fraction of Ru(III) without Mn(II) attached. In these complexes electron transfer could occur only after a rate-limiting reassociation of Mn(II), with a rate constant 2.9 × 109 M-1 s-1. In the analysis of the data, the fraction of dissociated Mn(II) could be determined independently at each concentration of 1, utilizing the fact that bound Mn(II) quenched the excited state, probably by energy transfer.
