- ABSTRACT Should research in business administration put a particular focus on the public sector? There are a large range of possible responses to this question, and in this article we look for an answer by providing a historical account of business administration research into the public sector in Sweden. We take as our starting point the fact that research in relation to the public sector was initially conducted differently, in its methods, approaches and even in its questions and answers. It was often more critical in comparison to the rest of the field. It is easy to explain why there was a specific interest in the public sector field, as this research produced different answers to different questions, and sometimes even delivered extraordinary results. Today business administration research in relation to the public sector is similar to research on private companies. The case could therefore be made that it is immaterial whether research takes place that focuses on the public sector, and the answer to our question would therefore be that we should no longer engage in specific research on the public sector. However, the public sector represents a large and interesting field, and for that reason we should nevertheless focus on it. Our discussion concludes that we now know more about business administration research in the public sector, at least about its history. However, we need to know a great deal more if we are to really understand our presence in the field. When it comes to the future, we believe that there will continue to be business administration researchers who will be proud to engage in the public sector field, and who will produce good research. The method used consists of interviews with respected researchers in Sweden who have been important in the field of business administration research on the public sector. We also examine the literature in order to complete the historical account. And we make use of Beckett – Samuel Beckett.
