  • Service portfolio management : A repository-based framework
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systems and Software. - : Elsevier. - 0164-1212 .- 1873-1228. ; 104, s. 112-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper discusses a framework for managing and evaluating ICT-enabled service portfolios along the service design phase. The framework adopts a service reuse perspective and it is made up of i) a model for the representation of a repository of services, ii) a model for the definition of a service portfolio representing current production lines of a service provider organization, iii) a set of metrics for service portfolio evaluation, and iv) a tool supporting managers in decision making for the achievement of design objectives. The proposed metrics and the tool are supposed to allow decision makers to get an improved view of the service design process. Furthermore, the framework supports managers in decision making for the achievement of production objectives as well as operational strategies, resulting in potential reuse initiatives, likewise. To provide evidence of the impacts of the proposed framework, experimental activities are discussed focusing on a real life case study, referring to an Italian small size service provider.

  • Brain pathology in focal status epilepticus : evidence from experimental models
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0149-7634. ; 131, s. 834-846
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Status Epilepticus (SE) is often a neurological emergency characterized by abnormally sustained, longer than habitual seizures. The new ILAE classification reports that SE “…can have long-term consequences including neuronal death, neuronal injury…depending on the type and duration of seizures”. While it is accepted that generalized convulsive SE exerts detrimental effects on the brain, it is not clear if other forms of SE, such as focal non-convulsive SE, leads to brain pathology and contributes to long-term deficits in patients. With the available clinical and experimental data, it is hard to discriminate the specific action of the underlying SE etiologies from that exerted by epileptiform activity. This information is highly relevant in the clinic for better treatment stratification, which may include both medical and surgical intervention for seizure control. Here we review experimental studies of focal SE, with an emphasis on focal non-convulsive SE. We present a repertoire of brain pathologies observed in the most commonly used animal models and attempt to establish a link between experimental findings and human condition(s). The extensive literature on focal SE animal models suggest that the current approaches have significant limitations in terms of translatability of the findings to the clinic. We highlight the need for a more stringent description of SE features and brain pathology in experimental studies in animal models, to improve the accuracy in predicting clinical translation.

  • The genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 314:5801, s. 941-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes.

  • Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste Recovery by Conversion into Added-Value Polyhydroxyalkanoates and Biogas
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2168-0485. ; 6:12, s. 16375-16385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The integrated-multistage process proposed herein is a practical example of a biorefinery platform in which the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is used as a valued source for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and biogas production. Technical and economical feasibilities of this approach have been demonstrated at pilot-scale, providing a possible upgrade to traditional biowaste management practices, presently based on anaerobic digestion (AD). A pH-controlled OFMSW fermentation stage produced a liquid VFA-rich stream with a high VFA/CODSOL ratio (0.90 COD/COD) that was easily used in the following aerobic stages for biomass and PHA production. The solid fraction was valorized into biogas through AD, obtaining energy and minimizing secondary flux waste generation. The reliable biomass enrichment was demonstrated by a stable feast-famine regime and supported by microbial community analysis. The selected consortium accumulated PHA up to 55% wt. Compared to the traditional AD process in an urban scenario of 900000 AE, the integrated approach for OFMSW valorization is preferable, and it is characterized by an electrical energy production of 85.7 MWh/d and 1.976 t/d as PHA productivity. The proposed process was also evaluated as economically sustainable if the PHA is marketed from 0.90 €/kg as the minimum threshold to a higher market price.
