  • TRY plant trait database - enhanced coverage and open access
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 26:1, s. 119-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

  • Global distribution of electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic waves observed on THEMIS
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 38, s. L17105-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A global, statistical analysis of electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves is performed using THEMIS wave data. Our results confirm the high occurrence of <1 mV/m ECH emissions throughout the outer magnetosphere (L > 5). The strongest (>= 1 mV/m) ECH waves are enhanced during geomagnetically disturbed periods, and are mainly confined close to the magnetic equator (|lambda| < 3 degrees) over the region L <= 10 in the night and dawn MLT sector. ECH wave intensities within 3 degrees <= |lambda| < 6 degrees are generally much weaker but not negligible especially for L < similar to 12 on the midnight side. Furthermore, the occurrence rates and variability of moderately intense (>= 0.1 mV/m) ECH emissions suggest that ECH wave scattering could contribute to diffuse auroral precipitation in the outer (L > 8) magnetosphere where chorus emissions are statistically weak.

  • Design and characterization of a triazole-based growth hormone secretagogue receptor modulator inhibiting the glucoregulatory and feeding actions of ghrelin
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Biochemical Pharmacology. - : Elsevier. - 0006-2952 .- 1356-1839. ; 202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a G protein-coupled receptor that regulates essential physiological functions. In particular, activation of GHSR in response to its endogenous agonist ghrelin promotes food intake and blood glucose increase. Therefore, compounds aimed at blocking GHSR signaling constitute potential options against obesity-related metabolic disorders. We have previously developed potent ligands of GHSR based on a triazole scaffold. Here, we report a new 3,4,5-trisubstituted 1,2,4-triazole compound, named JMV 6616, that potently blocks GHSR activity in vitro and in vivo. Specifically, in HEK293T cells JMV 6616 behaves as an inverse agonist since it binds to GHSR and inhibits its ghrelin-independent signaling. Accordingly, using purified labeled GHSR assembled into lipid nanodiscs we found that JMV 6616 decreases GHSR-catalyzed G protein activation and stabilizes an inactive receptor conformation. Importantly, JMV 6616 also acts on native GHSR since it blocks the insulinostatic effect of ghrelin in pancreatic islets. In mice, JMV 6616 inhibits blood glucose-raising effects of ghrelin treatment and the orexigenic actions of acute ghrelin administration. Together, our data suggest that this triazole-derived modulator of GHSR holds promise to mitigate several pathological features associated with eating and metabolic disorders.

  • Cross-scale : multi-scale coupling in space plasmas
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Experimental astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 23:3, s. 1001-1015
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most of the visible universe is in the highly ionised plasma state, and most of that plasma is collision-free. Three physical phenomena are responsible for nearly all of the processes that accelerate particles, transport material and energy, and mediate flows in systems as diverse as radio galaxy jets and supernovae explosions through to solar flares and planetary magnetospheres. These processes in turn result from the coupling amongst phenomena at macroscopic fluid scales, smaller ion scales, and down to electron scales. Cross-Scale, in concert with its sister mission SCOPE (to be provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency-JAXA), is dedicated to quantifying that nonlinear, time-varying coupling via the simultaneous in-situ observations of space plasmas performed by a fleet of 12 spacecraft in near-Earth orbit. Cross-Scale has been selected for the Assessment Phase of Cosmic Vision by the European Space Agency.
