  • The FERRUM project : metastable lifetimes in Cr II
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 420:2, s. 1636-1639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parity forbidden radiative transitions from metastable levels are observed in spectra of low-density astrophysical plasmas. These lines are used as probes of the physical conditions, made possible due to the long lifetime of their upper level. In a joint effort, the FERRUM project aims to obtain new and accurate atomic data for the iron-group elements, and part of this project concerns forbidden lines. The radiative lifetimes of the metastable energy levels 3 d4(a 3 D)4 s c4 D 5/2 and 3 d4(a 3 D)4 s c4 D 7/2 of singly ionized chromium have been measured. The experiment has been performed at the ion storage ring CRYRING. We employed a laser-probing technique developed for measuring long lifetimes. In this article, we present the lifetimes of these levels to be t5/2= 1.28(16) s and t7/2= 1.37(7) s, respectively. A comparison with previous theoretical work shows good agreement and the result is discussed in a theoretical context.

  • Spectroscopic study of titanium monohydride and storage ring experiments
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis describes two projects, spectroscopy of the astrophysically relevant molecule TiH and its isotopologue TiD, and the dissociative recombination (DR) reaction of astrophysically and atmospherically relevant molecules. Emphasis in the thesis is on the first project. A series of laser aided spectroscopic studies of TiH/TiD has been carried out. A search for forbidden transitions in the (green) B-X band of TiH was performed. This was followed by a rather bitter fight for the analysis of the perturbed and congested B-X band of TiD, and this was finally rewarding. A substantial extension of a previously reported analysis of this band was performed. The new analysis includes transitions between higher vibrational levels never previously identified. This made it possible to report the first experimentally derived equilibrium constants for the TiH/TiD molecules. There is a need for such results for metal hydrides in the work of calculating the opacity of the atmospheres of cool M and L type stars. The DR storage ring experiments have been carried out at the ion storage ring CRYRING in Stockholm. Measurements of the branching fractions and DR rate constants of molecular ions have been done. These results find use in the modeling of the chemistry in interstellar clouds as well as of atmospheres, like the one of Titan, one of the moons of Saturn, which was recently visited by the spacecraft Cassini.

  • Laser-probing measurements and calculations of lifetimes of the 5d 2D3/2 and 5d 2D5/2 metastable levels in Ba II
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 75:5, s. 052506-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The two metastable levels 5d 2D3∕2 and 5d 2D5∕2 in Ba II both show extremely long lifetimes of the order of several tens of seconds each. This has been found both by experiments and by theoretical predictions. The small transition probabilities associated with these two levels make them interesting and challenging for theoreticians as well as for experimentalists. Several calculations and measurements of these two lifetimes have been made previously but discrepancies between the results are present. This article presents values of τ=89.4±15.6 s for the 2D3∕2 level and τ=32.0±4.6 s for the 2D5∕2 level measured in a beam-laser experiment performed at the ion storage ring CRYRING. These values are supported by our new calculations resulting in τ=82.0 s for the 2D3∕2 level and τ=31.6 s for the 2D5∕2 level.

  • The FERRUM project : Transition probabilities for forbidden lines in [Fe II] and experimental metastable lifetimes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 508:1, s. 525-529
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. Accurate transition probabilities for forbidden lines are important diagnostic parameters for low-density astrophysical plasmas. In this paper we present experimental atomic data for forbidden [Fe II] transitions that are observed as strong features in astrophysical spectra. Aims. We measure lifetimes for the 3d(6)((3)G)4s a (4)G(11/2) and 3d(6)((3)D)4s b (4)D(1/2) metastable levels in Fe II and experimental transition probabilities for the forbidden transitions 3d(7) a (4)F(7/2,9/2)-3d(6)((3)G)4s a (4)G(11/2). Methods. The lifetimes were measured at the ion storage ring facility CRYRING using a laser probing technique. Astrophysical branching fractions were obtained from spectra of Eta Carinae, obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The lifetimes and branching fractions were combined to yield absolute transition probabilities. Results. The lifetimes of the a (4)G(11/2) and the b (4)D(1/2) levels have been measured and have the following values, tau = 0.75 +/- 0.10 s and tau = 0.54 +/- 0.03 s respectively. Furthermore, we have determined the transition probabilities for two forbidden transitions of a (4)F(7/2,9/2)-a (4)G(11/2) at 4243.97 and 4346.85 angstrom. Both the lifetimes and the transition probabilities are compared to calculated values in the literature.

  • Examination of Dissociative Recombination Processes of Importance for Astrochemically Evolving Interstellar Clouds
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Each single moment a myriad of processes is taking place throughout the universe. A great deal of them has been found to be dissociative recombination (DR) reactions. In this thesis the major work described are related to experimental determination of reaction rates and how the reaction products splits up into their final fragments. I focus on the study of ion formation of molecules that can function as life precursors. The following species have been investigated and are discussed in this thesis:CH3OH2+, CD3OD2+, N2O+, CH2OH+, CD2OD+, CD2OD2+ , CD3OCD2+ and (CD3)2OD+The result of these measurements are and will be used in astrochemical model calculations in which the rates used hitherto greatly have been based on educated guesses. Employing the outcome of the DR investigations of the CH3OH2+ and CD3OD2+ ions have shown the great impact on such models.

  • Stark Spectroscopy, Lifetimes and Coherence Effects in Diatomic Molecular Systems
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this dissertation is exemplified how different laser based methods are applied in high-resolution spectroscopic studies of internal properties of diatomic molecules.A molecular beam apparatus assembly is described, where a laser ablation source is combined with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Compounds investigated with this equipment are hafnium sulfide and hafnium oxide. The molecules are excited and ionized applying the resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) scheme, which is a sensitive absorption and detection technique for probing the population of an excited state.By means of the DC Stark effect, permanent electric dipole moments of HfS in the D 1Π state and HfO in the b 3Π1 state are determined while the molecules are exposed to a static electric field. Under field-free conditions low temperature rotationally resolved spectra are recorded, generating line positions from which molecular parameters are derived. The R2PI method, modified with an adjustable delay time, is also used in lifetime measurements of individual rotational levels of the HfS D 1Π and HfO b 3Π1 states. Oscillator strengths for transitions from the ground state are calculated, and in this connection basic concepts like Einstein coefficients, line strengths and Hönl-London factors, are surveyed. Theoretical calculation of lifetimes is discussed in view of the fact that a commonly available computer program (LEVEL 7.5 by Le Roy) gives erroneous output. Some coherence and quantum interference related phenomena, such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT) splitting, are presented in the latter part of this thesis. Fundamental concepts and relations are introduced and explained. The driven three-level cascade system is elucidated, including some of its experimental applications to alkali metal dimers, Na2 and Li2.A triple resonance spectroscopy experiment is described in terms of a three-laser, four-level inverted-Y excitation scheme, implemented in Na2. The accompanying density matrix formalism, providing the basis for theoretical simulations, is accounted for. From analysis of the results an absolute value of the electric dipole moment matrix element (transition moment) is extracted, using the AC Stark effect. Some recently reported unexpected experimental results and unforeseen features, occurring in Doppler broadened samples and related to the open character of molecular systems, are briefly commented.

  • The FERRUM project : experimental and theoretical transition rates of forbidden [Sc II] lines and radiative lifetimes of metastable ScII levels
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 480:2, s. 575-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. In many plasmas, long-lived metastable atomic levels are depopulated by collisions (quenched) before they decay radiatively. In low-density regions, however, the low collision rate may allow depopulation by electric dipole (E1) forbidden radiative transitions, so-called forbidden lines (mainly M1 and E2 transitions). If the atomic transition data are known, these lines are indicators of physical plasma conditions and used for abundance determination. Aims. Transition rates can be derived by combining relative intensities between the decay channels, so-called branching fractions (BFs), and the radiative lifetime of the common upper level. We use this approach for forbidden [Sc II] lines, along with new calculations. Methods. Neither BFs for forbidden lines, nor lifetimes of metastable levels, are easily measured in a laboratory. Therefore, astrophysical BFs measured in Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) spectra of the strontium filament of Eta Carinae are combined with lifetime measurements using a laser probing technique on a stored ion-beam (CRYRING facility, MSL, Stockholm). These quantities are used to derive the absolute transition rates (A-values). New theoretical transition rates and lifetimes are calulated using the CIV3 code. Results. We report experimental lifetimes of the Sc II levels 3d(2) a(3)P(0,1,2) with lifetimes 1.28, 1.42, and 1.24 s, respectively, and transition rates for lines from these levels down to 3d4s a(3)D in the region 8270-8390 angstrom. These are the most important forbidden [Sc II] transitions. New calculations for lines and metastable lifetimes are also presented, and are in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Experimental Techniques for Studies in Atomic & Molecular Physics
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is based on a selection of six different experimental techniques used for studies in atomic and molecular physics. The techniques analysed in the thesis are compared to find similarities in strategies and ways to avoid sources of error.Paper 1 deals with collision based spectroscopy with 60 keV Xe6+ ions on sodium and argon gas targets. Information on energy of Rydberg states in Xe5+ is unveiled by optical spectroscopy in the wavelength range from vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to visible. In paper 2, the fast ion-beam laser spectroscopy (FIBLAS) is adapted for measuring hyperfine structure of barium isotopes in an isotopically pure ion-beam. This techniques involves changing the isotope during the measurement to minimize sources of error in measurement and enhance the signal from lesser abundant isotopes. The FIBLAS technique is used in paper 3 to study samarium ions. The ions are optically pumped and the recorded optical nutation is used to measure transition probabilities. This technique eludes the difficulties inherent in relative intensity measurements of all the radiative transitions from an excited state. In Paper 4, optical emission spectroscopy is used in the VUV region to study noble gas mixture discharges. The source of the emission bands near the resonance lines of krypton and xenon are found to be heteronuclear dimers. In paper 5, radiation from a pulsed argon plasma with admixture of nitrogen is studied with time resolved spectroscopy in the VUV and ultraviolet wavelength ranges to investigate the mechanism of energy transport. A metastable state of atomic argon is found to be an important source of energy to many radiative processes. In Paper 6, photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) on thiophene, on 3-bromothiophene and on 3,4-dibromothiophene using time-of-flight photoelectron-photoelectron coincidence technique and conventional PES to investigate the onset of double ionisation compared to the onset of single ionisation in molecules.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP Publishing. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896 .- 0281-1847. ; 78:1, s. 015301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lifetime of the metastable level 3d(21)G(4) in a singly charged scandium has been experimentally investigated at the ion storage ring CRYRING. A laser probing technique has been used for the studies. We also report calculated lifetimes and transition rates for 10 metastable levels in Sc II, including the 3d(21)G(4) state, by calculations using configuration interaction wave functions. The lifetime of the (1)G(4) level is experimentally determined to be tau(exp) = 2.64 +/- 0.18 s and is in good agreement with the theoretical calculation tau(th) = 2.84 s.
