  • Teaching nanoscience across scientific and geographical borders-A European Master programme in nanoscience and nanotechnology
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 100:Part 3
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the Erasmus Mundus Master (EMM) Programme, five European Universities (KU Leuven, Belgium, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, Delft University of Technology and Leiden University, the Netherlands, and the University of Dresden, Germany) have joined forces to offer a unique master programme in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, EMM-nano, at the cutting edge of state-of-the-art research. The students design and build their individual area of specialisation within nanophysics, nanotechnology, biophysics, biotechnology through their choice of trajectory between the partners. We discuss some of the challenges related to the crossdisciplinary nature of the field, educational activities in cleanrooms, and issues related to the integration of teaching programmes across the borders within Europe.

  • An Autosteresoscopic 3D Display System Based on Prism Patterned Projection Screen
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE/OSA Journal of Display Technology. - 1551-319X. ; 6:3, s. 94-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a 2-view Autostereoscopic 3D Projection display system, a radically designed projection screen film system coupled with a conventional projection display is herein presented and shown to produce a superior 3D effect than most current autostereoscopic and non-autostereo 3D display systems.

  • Digital Micro Hinge (DMH) Based Display Pixels
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE/OSA Journal of Display Technology. - 1551-319X. ; 6:4, s. 142-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using concepts from thin-film optics we hereby present a different design for a potentially high performance display system. The system's pixel design is centered around the selective reflections and transmissions of well defined and constructed thin films on specific substrates. By computing the relevant parameters for specific thin films that can reflect and transmit only Red, Green and Blue light and marrying the result to an RGB LED backlight system a rather unique display system emerges which we termed the Digital Micro Hinge Display (DMH).

  • The influence of the molecular structure on the second-order nonlinear optical properties of pyroelectric liquid crystalline polymers
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: American Chemical Society Symposium Series (ACS). - Washington, DC : American Chemical Society. - 0097-6156 .- 1947-5918. ; 695, s. 315-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pyroelectric Liquid Crystal Polymers (PLCP), a novel class of material with intrinsic polar order developed in our laboratory, are discussed. Thin films (2-4µm) of PLCP were prepared by photopolymerization of ferroelectric liquid crystalline monomers in the chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase. The poly(acrylate) materials have been structurally modified in order to improve their nonlinear optical and thermal properties. Further are their longterm nonlinear optical properties discussed based on results from second harmonic generation (SHG), spontaneous polarization (Ps), and dielectric spectroscopy.

  • Safe and ergonomic welding masks by fast liquid crystals
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1563-5287 .- 1542-1406. ; 494, s. 195-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent developments in welding technology, in particular the high intensity pulsed welding arc, have sharpened the requirements on speed and adjustable attenuation for safe and ergonomic operations. With this advent the conventional welding helmets based on nematic liquid crystals are facing difficulties because the nematics are not responding fast enough to stroboscopically follow the changing intensity of the arc during pulsed welding. We propose here a new generation of welding shutters based on smectic (ferroelectric or antiferroelectric) liquid crystals which are fast enough to be synchronized to follow pulsed arc regimes and hence permitting a better visibility of the object under work. The two varieties of smectic materials used are polymer-stabilized in order to make the device shock-proof, to prevent the formation of specific defects such as stripes and chevrons, and to reduce the back-relaxation time in the antiferroelectric case.

  • Atomic force microscopy of rubbed polyimide aligning films for liquid crystal displays
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: 15th International Liquid Crystal ConferenceBUDAPEST, HUNGARY, JUL 03-08, 1994. ; , s. 89-98
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The surface of polyimide (PI) films for aligning liquid crystals were studied by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface of the unrubbed PI films consisted of polymer clusters of different sizes which are randomly distributed over the film area. After rubbing, however, these polymer clusters formed long chains along the rubbing direction. The cluster chains were separated with periodicity about 100 nm for weak rubbing strength. Deeper grooves are also present, separated with periodicity about 2 mu m that could be related to the microstructure of the fibres from the rubbing cloth. On increasing the rubbing strength further on, the cluster chains coalesce into wider ones. The rubbed PI films show optical retardation, which was increased rapidly with increased the rubbing strength and reached a constant value of about 1.4nm.

  • Chiral smectic C subphases induced by mixing a bistereogenic antiferroelectric liquid crystal with a non-chiral liquid crystal
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Ferroelectrics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0015-0193 .- 1563-5112. ; 315, s. 221-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By mixing a bistereogenic antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) compound, exhibiting only the SmQ* and SmC a * mesophases, with the achiral N-SmC liquid crystal HOAB we could induce all three AFLC SmC-type subphases, SmC α *, SmC β * and SmC γ *. This seems to be in contradiction with two recent postulations regarding the subphase stability, one of which suggests that the subphases appear as a result of strong chiral interactions, the other that these phases require high smectic order, something one would generally not expect in mixtures. We have studied the helical pitch, optical tilt angle, spontaneous polarization and the x-ray diffraction due to the smectic layering, as a function of mixing ratio in order to better understand the relation between phase sequence and mixture composition. The smectic layer spacing shows a strongly non-linear behavior, suggesting that the basic structure of the pure AFLC substance is retained up to a HOAB content of about 75%.
