  • Fotblomflugor Platycheirus (Diptera, Syrphidae) längs den svenska fjällkedjan: en flerårig inventering.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 135, s. 109-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fauna of hoverflies in Boreal and Arctic parts of Scandinavia is still very poorly investigated. Therefore we performed an 11 year survey of the hoverfly genus Platycheirus Lepeletier & Serville, 1828 along the Caledonian mountain chain in Sweden (from Värmland northwards to the Torneträsk area). During 2003-2013 we annually performed two trips in order to survey various areas and to collect flies by netting. Altogether 150 localities were visited and a total of 1862 Platycheirus-specimens belonging to 40 species were collected. Two species were recorded for the first time in Sweden: Platycheirus carinatus(Curran, 1927) and P. magadanensis Mutin, 1999 and 74 records were new for various fauna-provinces. Four main areas were selected for comparative studies on distribution, habitat, local migration and environmental influences on population fluctuation of Platycheirus-species. We noted that males hatch earlier than females and the latter sex await the maturing anthers of their feeding plants. Moreover, Platycheirus-species in alpine and subalpine terrain seem to be very cold resistant and active at air-temperatures around 10O C. Environmental disturbance within the subalpine and northern boreal vegetation zones, e.g. cutting of woods or constructing of slalom slopes, creates new flower rich habitats and therefore support the population sizes within this assemblage of overflies. The observed distribution of northern Platycheirus-species along the Boreal and Arctic parts of Scandinavia reflects its worldwide Holarctic and Palearctic relations.

  • The effect of mandibular advancement device on apneas and sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Chest. - : Elsevier BV. - 0012-3692 .- 1931-3543. ; 113, s. 707-713
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To evaluate the effects of a mandibular advancement device on apneas and sleep in, mild, moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea. Design: Prospective study. Subjects: Forty-four of 47 patients included. Intervention: Individually adjusted mandibular advancement devices. Measurements: Polysomnographic sleep recordings for 1 night without the device and 1 night with it, with a median of 1 day and no changes in weight, medication, or sleep position between the recordings. Results: The device reduced the median apnea-hypopnea index from 11 (range, 7 to 19) to 5 (range, 0 to 17) (p<0.001) in 21 patients with mild sleep apnea, from 27 (range, 20 to 38) to 7 (range 1 to 19) (p<0.001) in 15 patients with moderate sleep apnea, and from 53 (range 44 to 66) to 14 (range, 2 to 32) (p=<0.05) in 8 patients with severe sleep apnea. The arousal index decreased and the sleep stage patterns improved in all severity groups. Twenty-eight of 44 patients were successfully treated with an obstructive apnea-hypopnea index of below 10 and a subjective reduction in snoring. Nine of 16 patients with treatment failure still reported a reduction in snoring. The success rate correlated inversely to the disease severity (r=-0.41; p<0.01). Conclusions: A mandibular advancement device reduces apnea and improves sleep quality in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, especially in those with mild and moderate disease. A follow-up sleep recording during treatment is necessary because of the risk of silent obstructive apneas without subjective snoring with the device.

  • Bronchodilator response and lung function decline : Associations with exhaled nitric oxide with regard to sex and smoking status
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: World Allergy Organization Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1939-4551. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a marker of type-2 inflammation used both to support diagnosis of asthma and follow up asthma patients. The associations of FeNO with lung function decline and bronchodilator (BD) response have been studied only scarcely in large populations. Objectives: To study the association between FeNO and a) retrospective lung function decline over 20 years, and b) lung function response to BD among asthmatic subjects compared with non-asthmatic subjects and with regards to current smoking and sex. Methods: Longitudinal analyses of previous lung function decline and FeNO level at follow-up and cross-sectional analyses of BD response and FeNO levels in 4257 participants (651 asthmatics) from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey. Results: Among asthmatic subjects, higher percentage declines of FEV1 and FEV1/FVC were associated with higher FeNO levels (p = 0.001 for both) at follow-up. These correlations were found mainly among non-smoking individuals (p = 0.001) and females (p = 0.001) in stratified analyses.Percentage increase in FEV1 after BD was positively associated with FeNO levels in non-asthmatic subjects. Further, after stratified for sex and smoking separately, a positive association was seen between FEV1 and FeNO levels in non-smokers and women, regardless of asthma status. Conclusions: We found a relationship between elevated FeNO and larger FEV1 decline over 20 years among subjects with asthma who were non-smokers or women. The association between elevated FeNO levels and larger BD response was found in both non-asthmatic and asthmatic subjects, mainly in women and non-smoking subjects.
