  • Quadrupole collectivity in Ca-42 from low-energy Coulomb excitation with AGATA
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 97:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ACoulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca-42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. gamma rays from excited states in Ca-42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca-42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2(1)(+) and 2(2)(+) states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0(1),(+)(2) and 2(1,2)(+) states, as well as triaxiality for 0(1,2)(+) states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca-42.

  • Superdeformed and Triaxial States in Ca-42
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 117:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 0(2)(+) has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A similar to 40 mass region is discussed. Furthermore, the potential of Coulomb excitation as a tool to study superdeformation has been demonstrated for the first time.

  • Towards The Determination Of Superdeformation In Ca-42
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254 .- 1509-5770. ; 44:3, s. 617-625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic structure of low-lying states in Ca-42 with a focus on a possible superdeformation in this nucleus was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy. Preliminary values of the determined quadrupole deformation parameters for both the ground state band and the presumed superdeformed band are presented.

  • Strong coupling effects on near-barrier 15C + 208Pb elastic scattering
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - 0370-2693. ; 855
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The presence of a neutron halo in 15C has been demonstrated in several reaction experiments at intermediate energies. In the present study, the dynamical effects of this structure are observed for the first time at Coulomb barrier energies in the 15C + 208Pb quasi-elastic scattering at MeV, measured at the HIE-ISOLDE facility, CERN using the high-granularity detector array GLORIA. A combined continuum discretised coupled channels and coupled reaction channels calculation describes the data well and significant coupling effects due both to breakup and single-neutron stripping are identified.

  • Study of the scattering of 15C at energies around the Coulomb barrier
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 1643:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron rich carbon isotope 15C is the only known case of an almost "pure"2s1/2 single-neutron halo ground state configuration. At collision energies around the Coulomb barrier the reaction dynamics is expected to be dominated by single neutron transfer and breakup. To investigate these effects, we have measured the scattering of 15C with a 208Pb target at 65 MeV at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The preliminary data demonstrates the presence of a strong long-range absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section. The results are discussed in the framework of Optical Model calculations.

  • Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in soil
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - 0044-7447. ; 26:8, s. 563-570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review the current knowledge on biodiversity in soils, its role in ecosystem processes, its importance for human purposes, and its resilience against stress and disturbance. The number of existing species is vastly higher than the number described, even in the macroscopically visible taxa, and biogeographical syntheses are largely lacking. A major effort in taxonomy and the training of a new generation of systematists is imperative. This effort has to be focussed on the groups of soil organisms that, to the best of our knowledge, play key roles in ecosystem functioning. To identify such groups, spheres of influence (SOI) of soil biota - such as the root biota, the shredders of organic matter and the soil bioturbators - are recognized that presumably control ecosystem processes, for example, through interactions with plants. Within those SOI, functional groups of soil organisms are recognized. Research questions of the highest urgency are the assignment of species to functional groups and determining the redundancy of species within functional groups. These priorities follow from the need to address the extent of any loss of functioning in soils, associated with intensive agriculture, forest disturbance, pollution of the environment, and global environmental change. The soil biota considered at present to be most at risk are species-poor functional groups among macrofaunal shredders of organic matter, bioturbators of soil, specialized bacteria like nitrifiers and nitrogen fixers, and fungiforming mycorrhizas. An experimental approach in addressing these research priorities is needed, using longterm and large-scale field experiments and modern methods of geostatistics and geographic information systems.

  • Minimum Distance Analysis of a Certain Class of 2-D ISI Channels
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. - 0018-9448. ; 58:2, s. 878-887
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform a minimum distance analysis of a class of two-dimensional intersymbol interference (ISI) channels applicable to multitrack magnetic recording and orthogonal frequency division multiplex transmission systems. Exact minimum distance for a wide class of ISI responses is derived. The fundamental analytical technique is to transform the channel into an equivalent minimum phase channel. The results improve upon the prior work of Soljanin and Georghiades.

  • Lifetime risk of stroke in the general male population
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0001-6314 .- 1600-0404. ; 142:1, s. 30-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives Most previous studies of incidence rates of stroke are from register studies, while data from prospective cohort studies are limited. The aim of the present study was to describe hazard rates, prevalence and cumulative proportion free from stroke during a lifelong follow-up of a representative sample of middle-aged men sampled from the general population. Methods A population-based sample of 855 men, all born in 1913, was investigated at 50 years of age and followed up with repeated medical examinations at age 54, 60, 67, 75 and 80. Data from hospital records and the Cause of Death Register were collected, and all stroke events during 48 years of follow-up were registered. Medical records were scrutinized in order to confirm and validate the stroke diagnoses. Results One man was excluded because of stroke prior to baseline, while 176 of the remaining 854 men (20.7%) suffered a first-ever stroke during follow-up. The total 5-year stroke risk (hazard rate) increased with age, from 3.54 (95% CI: 0-7.55) per 1000 persons at risk at age 50 years, to 119.05 (95% CI: 45.39-192.70) at age 90 years. The stroke prevalence peaked at age 80 and older, with about 120 cases per 1000 years of observation. The survival rate (cumulative proportion free from stroke) at age 98 was 50.0%. Conclusion One out of five men in this population sample suffered a stroke of any type during follow-up from 50 to 98 years of age and the cumulative incidence was close to 50%.
