    • We analyze the spectral lags of a sample of bright gamma-ray burst pulses observed by CGRO BATSE and compare these with the results of high-resolution spectroscopical investigations. We find that pulses with hard spectra have the largest lags, and that there is a similar, but weaker correlation between hardness- intensity correlation index,., and lag. We also find that the lags differ considerably between pulses within a burst. Furthermore, the peak energy mainly decreases with increasing lag. Assuming a lag-luminosity relation as suggested by Norris et al., there will thus be a positive luminosity - peak- energy correlation. We also find that the hardness ratio, of the total flux in two channels, only weakly correlates with the spectral evolution parameters. These results are consistent with those found in the analytical and numerical analysis in Paper I. Finally, we find that for these bursts, dominated by a single pulse, there is a correlation between the observed energy-flux, F, and the inverse of the lag, Deltat: F proportional to Deltat(-1). We interpret this flux-lag relation found as a consequence of the lag-luminosity relation and that these bursts have to be relatively narrowly distributed in z. However, they still have to, mainly, lie beyond z similar to 0.01, since they do not coincide with the local super-cluster of galaxies. We discuss the observed correlations within the collapsar model, in which the collimation of the outflow varies. Both the thermal photospheric emission as well as non-thermal, optically-thin synchrotron emission should be important.

    • Abstract in Undetermined Vi problematiserar den kritik mot föreläsningsbaserat lärande vid universitet och högskolor, som är vanlig i dagens pedagogiska diskussioner. Vi baserar vårt arbete på enkätundersökningar och på djupintervjuer av studenter på grundutbildningskurser i fysik vid Lunds universitet och Kungliga Tekniska högskolan. Vi anser att den rådande bilden av föreläsningens värde bör nyanseras så att man inte bortser från det unikt positiva hos en bra föreläsning. Man bör därför inte förkasta denna pedgogiska metod, utan, väl förberedd, har föreläsningen en viktig och uppskattad roll i inlärningen.

  • The Zeeman-sensitive emission lines of MgI at 12 microns in Procyon

    • Emission lines of magnesium at 12 mum have been observed in the spectrum of Procyon. We reproduce the observed disk-averaged line flux from Procyon ( as well as the observed intensity profiles from the Sun) by calculating the line formation and relaxing the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium. We find that the lines in Procyon are formed in the photosphere in the same manner as the solar lines. We discuss our modeling of these Rydberg lines and evaluate, among other things, the importance of the ionizing flux and updated model-atom parameters. The lines are of large diagnostic value for measurements of stellar magnetic fields through their Zeeman splitting. We have not, however, detected splitting of the Mg I lines in Procyon. Using simple arguments, we believe that we would have detected a magnetic field had it been of a strength larger than approximately 800 G covering more than a quarter of the surface. We discuss the prospects for future use of the Zeeman-sensitive, mid-infrared Mg I emission lines as a diagnostic tool for stellar magnetic fields.

  • "XL-Calibur", the Next-Generation Balloon-Borne Hard X-ray Polarimeter

    • This paper introduces a second-generation balloon-borne hard X-ray polarimetry mission, XL-Calibur.(1) The XL-Calibur will follow up on the X-Calibur mission which was flown from Dec. 29, 2018 for a 2.5 days balloon flight from McMurdo (the Antarctic). X-ray polarimetry promises to give qualitatively new information about high-energy astrophysical sources, such as pulsars and binary black hole systems. The XL-Calibur contains a grazing incidence X-ray telescope with a focal plane detector unit that is sensitive to linear polarization. The telescope is very similar in design to the ASTRO-H HXT telescopes that has the world's largest effective area above 10 keV. XL-Calibur will use the same type of mirror. The detector unit combines a low atomic number Compton scatterer with a CdZnTe detector assembly to measure the polarization making use of the fact that polarized photons Compton scatter preferentially perpendicular to the electric field orientation. It also contains a CdZnTe imager at the bottom. The detector assembly is surrounded by a BGO anticoincidence shield. The pointing system with arcsecond accuracy will be achieved by the WASP (Wallops Arc Second Pointer) from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. A first flight of the XL-Calibur is currently foreseen for 2022, flying from Sweden.

    • It is widely accepted that strong and variable radiation detected over all accessible energy bands in a number of active galaxies arises from a relativistic, Doppler-boosted jet pointing close to our line of sight(1). The size of the emitting zone and the location of this region relative to the central supermassive black hole are, however, poorly known, with estimates ranging from light-hours to a light-year or more. Here we report the coincidence of a gamma (gamma)-ray flare with a dramatic change of optical polarization angle. This provides evidence for co-spatiality of optical and gamma-ray emission regions and indicates a highly ordered jet magnetic field. The results also require a non-axisymmetric structure of the emission zone, implying a curved trajectory for the emitting material within the jet, with the dissipation region located at a considerable distance from the black hole, at about 10(5) gravitational radii.

    • A cornerstone of Einstein’s special relativity is Lorentz invariance—the postulate that all observers measure exactly the same speed of light in vacuum, independent of photon-energy. While special relativity assumes that there is no fundamental length-scale associated with such invariance, there is a fundamental scale (the Planck scale, lPlanck~1.62×10-33cm or EPlanck = MPlanckc2~1.22×1019GeV), at which quantum effects are expected to strongly affect the nature of space–time. There is great interest in the (not yet validated) idea that Lorentz invariance might break near the Planck scale. A key test of such violation of Lorentz invariance is a possible variation of photon speed with energy. Even a tiny variation in photon speed, when accumulated over cosmological light-travel times, may be revealed by observing sharp features in γ-ray burst (GRB) light-curves. Here we report the detection of emission up to ~31GeV from the distant and short GRB090510. We find no evidence for the violation of Lorentz invariance, and place a lower limit of 1.2EPlanck on the scale of a linear energy dependence (or an inverse wavelength dependence), subject to reasonable assumptions about the emission (equivalently we have an upper limit of lPlanck/1.2 on the length scale of the effect). Our results disfavour quantum-gravity theories in which the quantum nature of space–time on a very small scale linearly alters the speed of light.

    • Pulsars are born with subsecond spin periods and slow by electromagnetic braking for several tens of millions of years, when detectable radiation ceases. A second life can occur for neutron stars in binary systems. They can acquire mass and angular momentum from their companions, to be spun up to millisecond periods and begin radiating again. We searched Fermi Large Area Telescope data for pulsations from all known millisecond pulsars (MSPs) outside of globular clusters, using rotation parameters from radio telescopes. Strong gamma-ray pulsations were detected for eight MSPs. The gamma-ray pulse profiles and spectral properties resemble those of young gamma-ray pulsars. The basic emission mechanism seems to be the same for MSPs and young pulsars, with the emission originating in regions far from the neutron star surface.

  • BRIGHT ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI SOURCE LIST FROM THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF THE FERMI LARGE AREA TELESCOPE ALL-SKY SURVEY

    • The first three months of sky-survey operation with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope reveal 132 bright sources at |b| > 10 degrees with test statistic greater than 100 ( corresponding to about 10 sigma). Two methods, based on the CGRaBS, CRATES, and BZCat catalogs, indicate high-confidence associations of 106 of these sources with known active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This sample is referred to as the LAT Bright AGN Sample (LBAS). It contains two radio galaxies, namely, Centaurus A and NGC 1275, and 104 blazars consisting of 58 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), 42 BL Lac objects, and 4 blazars with unknown classification. Four new blazars were discovered on the basis of the LAT detections. Remarkably, the LBAS includes 10 high-energy-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), sources which were previously difficult to detect in the GeV range. Another 10 lower-confidence associations are found. Only 33 of the sources, plus two at |b| < 10 degrees, were previously detected with Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope( EGRET), probably due to variability. The analysis of the gamma-ray properties of the LBAS sources reveals that the average GeV spectra of BL Lac objects are significantly harder than the spectra of FSRQs. No significant correlation between radio and peak gamma-ray fluxes is observed. Blazar log N-log S distributions and luminosity functions are constructed to investigate the evolution of the different blazar classes, with positive evolution indicated for FSRQs but none for BL Lacs. The contribution of LAT blazars to the total extragalactic gamma-ray intensity is estimated.

  • Detection of 16 Gamma-Ray Pulsars Through Blind Frequency Searches Using the Fermi LAT

    • Pulsars are rapidly rotating, highly magnetized neutron stars emitting radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum. Although there are more than 1800 known radio pulsars, until recently only seven were observed to pulse in gamma rays, and these were all discovered at other wavelengths. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) makes it possible to pinpoint neutron stars through their gamma-ray pulsations. We report the detection of 16 gamma-ray pulsars in blind frequency searches using the LAT. Most of these pulsars are coincident with previously unidentified gamma-ray sources, and many are associated with supernova remnants. Direct detection of gamma-ray pulsars enables studies of emission mechanisms, population statistics, and the energetics of pulsar wind nebulae and supernova remnants.

    • We report the detection of high-energy gamma-ray emission from two starburst galaxies using data obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Steady point-like emission above 200 MeV has been detected at significance levels of 6.8 sigma and 4.8 sigma, respectively, from sources positionally coincident with locations of the starburst galaxies M82 and NGC 253. The total fluxes of the sources are consistent with gamma-ray emission originating from the interaction of cosmic rays with local interstellar gas and radiation fields and constitute evidence for a link between massive star formation and gamma-ray emission in star-forming galaxies.
