  • Supporting Information Security Management : Developing a Method for Information Classification

    • In the highly digitalised world in which we live today, information and information systems have become critical assets to organisations, and hence need to be safeguarded accordingly. In order to implement and work with information security in a structured way, an Information Security Management System (ISMS) can be implemented. Asset management is a central activity in ISMS that aims at identifying, assigning ownership and adding protection to information assets. One activity within asset management is information classification that has the objective to ensure that the information receives an appropriate level of protection in accordance with its importance to the organisation. Information classification is a well-known practice for all kinds of organisations, both in the private and public sector, and is included in different variants in standards such as ISO/IEC 27002, COBIT and NIST-SP800.However, information classification has received little attention from academia, and many organisations are struggling with the implementation. The reasons behind why it is problematic, and how to address such issues, are largely unknown. Furthermore, existing approaches, described in, for example, standards and national recommendations, do not provide a coherent and systematic approach to information classification. The short descriptions in standards, and literature alike, leave out essential aspects needed for many organisations to adopt and implement information classification. There is, for instance, a lack of detailed descriptions regarding (1) procedures and concepts, (2) how to tailor the approach for different situations, (3) a framework that structures and guides the classification, (4) what roles should be involved in the classification, and (5) how information with different granularity is handled.This thesis aims to increase the applicability of information classification by developing a method for information classification in ISMS that draws from established standards and practice. In order to address this aim, a Design Science Research (DSR) study was performed in three cycles. A wide range of data was collected, including a series of interviews with experts and novices on information classification, a survey, most of the Swedish public sector information classification policies, and observations. There are three main contributions made by this thesis (1) the identification of issues and enablers for information classification, (2) the design principles underpinning the development of a method for information classification, and (3) the method for information classification itself. Contributions have also been made to the context around information classification, such as, for example, 20 practical suggestions for how to meet documented challenges in practice.

    • Patient Empowerment (PE) allows patients to be more active in managing their own health and quality of life. The aim of this paper is to analyze how trust affects PE, in the context of healthcare information systems. An interview study was conducted concerning patients’ online access to electronic healthcare records. Results show that PE requires that patients trust the information that healthcare professionals and their electronic health record systems provide. Without trust, patients cannot control their own participation in relation to the healthcare professionals. This may result in a diminished ability to participate in the healthcare processes regarding their own care. Practical implications include acquired knowledge about and awareness of how trust influences PE, with particular emphasis on healthcare professionals. A trust model is presented that illustrates the trustor-trustee dimensions of PE. This model has both theoretical and practical implications in its illustration of how trust and PE connect.

    • The problem we address is that researchers have insufficiently investigated the processes and nuances of Business and IT alignment. One attempt to tackle Business and IT alignment in a process-oriented way is to adopt the concept of IT Service Management (ITSM). However, identified challenges entails that ITSM is hard to define and that existing ITSM frameworks sometimes are considered as overly complex containing an extensive process scope, making it costly and hard to implement. The purpose of this workshop paper is to understand in what way are ITSM core processes supporting business and IT alignment? Our qualitative research approach embraced a two-phase method based on empirical studies where identified core processes were mapped using the Strategic Alignment Model. The result shows that the core of ITSM consists of five processes and that these processes somewhat constitute the bridges and interfaces that aligns Business and IT.

  • Facilitating the Implementation and Use of Self Service Business Intelligence

    • In traditional Business Intelligence (BI), there is a request-response scenario between technical power users serving non-technical casual users. Today, when data volumes and the frequency of use of a traditional BI system increase, power users are unable to serve all requests from casual users. Self-service Business Intelligence (SSBI) is an upcoming trend that addresses this problem since it enables all users to use BI in a self-reliant manner without support from power users.The aim of SSBI is to simplify the usage of traditional BI by letting all users conduct their own analysis. Users are allowed to access and use data as desired for their analysis when making decisions, which speeds up the process to use BI. At the same time the pressure on the IT department is relieved, since no power user is needed to support the process. SSBI enables organisations to make time critical decisions without waiting for reports that normally take weeks or months to be delivered. This saves organisational resources since all users can work more effectively and in a self-reliant manner compared to traditional BI. Although SSBI offers many benefits compared to traditional BI, many organisations are still struggling and failing to implement SSBI. The process to implement and use SSBI is not an easy task. There is no clear roadmap for how to achieve the SSBI benefits. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to facilitate the implementation and use of SSBI. Two objectives have been formulated to address this aim. First, it is important to identify what challenges organisations are facing when implementing and using SSBI. The second objective aims to identify success factors for managing the associated SSBI challenges. Case study research has been chosen as an appropriate research method to fulfil the research aim and objectives. The case study involves one BI consultancy firm and two of their main customers. The customers are medium-sized organisations which are considered to be the most experienced with implementing SSBI in the consultancy firm’s client base. With regard to research objective 1, 37 SSBI challenges have been identified and organized in in five categories of the AQUIRE framework: Access and use of data; Data Quality; User Independence; creating Reports; and Education. For research objective 2, nine success factors for SSBI implementation and use have been revealed as well as how they can be applied over time.  Initially, pilot groups and champions can increase interest in SSBI. Next, user groups and their data needs should be identified, and these user groups should get responsibility to change faulty data. Later, common data definitions and standard reports can simplify the use of data sources. Only then, top management support is needed to accomplish that business governs SSBI data content and that business employees and IT department employees work together in integrated settings. Finally, ongoing SSBI education should target non-technical and technical users differently and change its content over time.

    • Self-service business intelligence (SSBI) enables all users, including those with limited technical skills, to perform business intelligence (BI) tasks without the support of BI experts. SSBI reduces pressure on BI experts, gives more freedom to self-reliant users and speeds up decision-making. Recent research has illustrated how organisations experience numerous challenges when trying to obtain SSBI benefits. The AQUIRE framework organises 37 identified SSBI challenges in five categories: Access and use of data, Data Quality, User Independence, creating Reports and Education. SSBI literature does poorly address how these challenges can be tackled. This research study aimed to identify strategies on how to manage those 37 SSBI challenges. The performed case study includes 24 semi-structured interviews with respondents from two organisations which have been heavily involved in SSBI implementation. The results reveal how nine identified SSBI success factors are related to the 37 AQUIRE challenges and how they can be addressed over time.

    • Self-service Business Intelligence (SSBI) allows non-technical users to use Business Intelligence in a self-reliant manner without the support of technical users. Many organizations struggle to utilize the potential of SSBI and experience implementation challenges. This study aims to explore user-related SSBI challenges by conducting 30 qualitative interviews with 2 SSBI implementation projects. Analysis revealed challenges that can help practitioners to avoid unnecessary obstacles when implementing and using SSBI, and guide researchers in simplifying the implementation process.

    • The rapid pace of digitalisation provides many smarter and more efficient ways of interacting with the world, but may also lead to the exclusion of some groups. Senior citizens are one of these groups at risk. Taking the European Digital Competence Framework for Citizens as a starting point, we investigate digital survival skills for the elderly. Data was collected from digital education workshops for senior citizens organized jointly between Telia, Swedish municipalities, and the researchers. We use content analysis to understand seniors’ perceptions of which competences they need to survive in an increasingly digital environment and provide a version of the Competence Framework targeted at senior citizen inclusion. Lessons for inclusion initiatives are drawn from the results.

    • The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had a significant impact on healthcare delivery. As resources are reallocated, surgery for benign conditions such as gallstone disease is often given low priority. We do not know how this has affected the risk of patients with uncomplicated gallstone disease to develop acute cholecystitis, biliary pancreatitis, or obstructive jaundice.The study was based on the population-based Swedish Register of Gallstone Surgery and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography. The period prior to the first cases of COVID-19 in Sweden, that is, April 2015-March 2020, was compared to the period April 2020-March 2021 during the pandemic. Stratification was made for factors potentially related to priority decisions.Altogether, 78,211 procedures were performed during the period of the study. The ratio of procedures performed during April 2020-March 2021 in the previous 5 years was 0.960 (p = 0.113). The ratio of procedures on patients aged <65 years was 0.945 (p = 0.008), on patients aged 65-80 years was 0.964 (p = 0.423), on patients aged >80 years was 1.336 (p = 0.025), on men was 1.001 (p = 0.841), on women was 0.934 (p = 0.006), on procedures completed laparoscopically was 0.964 (p = 0.190), on procedures completed with open approach was 0.659 (p = 0.044), on acute procedures was 1.218 (p = 0.016), on planned procedures was 0.791 (p < 0.001), on procedures performed for biliary colic was 0.808 (p < 0.001), on procedures performed for acute cholecystitis was 1.274 (p = 0.012), for biliary pancreatitis was 1.192 (p = 0.037), and for obstructive jaundice was 1.366 (p = 0.008).The COVID-19 has had a great impact on how gallstone surgery has been organized over the last 2 years. The decreased number of planned procedures probably reflects the reallocation of resources during the pandemic. However, whether the increasing number of acute procedures is the result of postponed planned surgery or a continuation of a long-term trend toward more acute surgery remains unanswered. Further studies are needed to assess and evaluate how this has affected public health and health economics.

    • Healthcare, like society in general, is facing great changes and challenges. Rapid development and uptake of digital technologies bring about the need to change. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the amount of healthcare meetings taking place online has surged. This means, among other things, that there are more healthcare actors involved in a patient’s care, and that information relating to a patient needs to be shared across borders now more than ever need to be improved. However, this is currently not done seamlessly, and there are many hinders and obstacles to overcome. This research aims at enabling a holistic approach on how to handle patient information in order to support seamless and secure care along the whole patient process. In doing so, drivers and hinders need to be identified, and a socio-technical framework with concrete guidelines will be developed. These results will be a first step towards filling this research gap, and will connect several perspectives in order to make the results truly actionable and holistic.
