  • Growth and Redox Properties of Boron on Al(111) : Competing Affinities in the Case of Honeycomb AlB2
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - 1936-0851.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complexity of the geometric and electronic structure of boron allotropes is associated with the multicentric bonding character and the consequent B polymorphism. When growth is limited to two-dimensions (2D), the structural and electronic confinement yields the borophenes family, where the interaction with the templating substrate actually determines the stability of inequivalent boron phases. We report here a detailed study of the growth of the honeycomb AlB2 phase on Al(111), followed by an investigation of its oxidation and reduction properties. By means of a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we show that the structure of the B/Al interface is affected by the complex interplay between B, Al, and common reactive agents like oxygen and hydrogen. While kinetic effects associated with diffusion and strain release influence the AlB2 growth in vacuo, Al, B, O, and H chemical affinities determine its redox behavior. Reduction with atomic hydrogen involves the B layer and yields an ordered honeycomb borophane H/AlB2 phase. Instead, oxidation takes place at the Al interface, giving origin to buried and 1D surface aluminum oxide phases.

  • Mitochondrial DNA copy number and future risk of B-cell lymphoma in a nested case-control study in the prospective EPIC cohort.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 124:4, s. 530-535
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been suggested that mitochondrial dysfunction and DNA damage are involved in lymphomagenesis. Increased copy number of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) as a compensatory mechanism of mitochondrial dysfunction previously has been associated with B-cell lymphomas, in particular chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). However, current evidence is limited and based on a relatively small number of cases. Using a nested case-control study, we extended these findings with a focus on subtype specific analyses. Relative mtDNA copy number was measured in the buffy coat of prospectively collected blood of 469 lymphoma cases and 469 matched controls. The association between mtDNA copy number and the risk of developing lymphoma and histologic subtypes was examined using logistic regression models. We found no overall association between mtDNA and risk of lymphoma. Subtype analyses revealed, significant increased risks of CLL (n=102) with increasing mtDNA copy number (OR=1.34, 1.44 and 1.80 for quartiles 2-4, respectively P-trend=0.001). mtDNA copy number was not associated with follow-up time suggesting that this observation is not strongly influenced by indolent disease status. This study substantially strengthens the evidence that mtDNA copy number is related to risk of CLL and supports the importance of mitochondrial dysfunction as a possible mechanistic pathway in CLL ontogenesis.

  • The Data-Driven Product-Service Systems Design and Delivery (4DPSS) Methodology
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030579968 ; , s. 314-321
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design of Product-Service Systems (PSS) has been approached from several perspectives like the process, innovation, engineering and operational ones providing, for each one of those, a specific view on the problem. This paper proposes a Data-Driven Product-Service System Design and Delivery (4DPSS) methodology focusing on the collection and exploitation of delivery data to feed the design phase. The logic of the methodology relies on aggregating operational data (collected in the delivery phase) to build a consistent body of knowledge to be exploited in iterative PSS design activities, thanks to better identification of customer needs, and product and service process design issues. This paper presents the 4DPSS methodology at a theoretical level, the implementations of the different methods constituting the methodology are referred to in the text, while its implementation and test as a whole are demanded to future work. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

  • Environmental footprint family to address local to planetary sustainability and deliver on the SDGs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : ELSEVIER. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 693
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of publications on environmental footprint indicators has been growing rapidly, but with limited efforts to integrate different footprints into a coherent framework. Such integration is important for comprehensive understanding of environmental issues, policy formulation and assessment of trade-offs between different environmental concerns. Here, we systematize published footprint studies and define a family of footprints that can be used for the assessment of environmental sustainability. We identify overlaps between different footprints and analyse how they relate to the nine planetary boundaries and visualize the crucial information they provide for local and planetary sustainability. In addition, we assess how the footprint family delivers on measuring progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), considering its ability to quantify environmental pressures along the supply chain and relating them to the water-energy-food-ecosystem (WEFE) nexus and ecosystem services. We argue that the footprint family is a flexible framework where particular members can be included or excluded according to the context or area of concern. Our paper is based upon a recent workshop bringing together global leading experts on existing environmental footprint indicators. Elsevier B.V.

  • A catalog of genetic loci associated with kidney function from analyses of a million individuals
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 51:6, s. 957-972
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is responsible for a public health burden with multi-systemic complications. Through transancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and independent replication (n = 1,046,070), we identified 264 associated loci (166 new). Of these,147 were likely to be relevant for kidney function on the basis of associations with the alternative kidney function marker blood urea nitrogen (n = 416,178). Pathway and enrichment analyses, including mouse models with renal phenotypes, support the kidney as the main target organ. A genetic risk score for lower eGFR was associated with clinically diagnosed CKD in 452,264 independent individuals. Colocalization analyses of associations with eGFR among 783,978 European-ancestry individuals and gene expression across 46 human tissues, including tubulo-interstitial and glomerular kidney compartments, identified 17 genes differentially expressed in kidney. Fine-mapping highlighted missense driver variants in 11 genes and kidney-specific regulatory variants. These results provide a comprehensive priority list of molecular targets for translational research.

  • In Situ Observation of C−C Coupling and Step Poisoning During the Growth of Hydrocarbon Chains on Ni(111)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie - International Edition. - : Wiley. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 62:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synthesis of high-value fuels and plastics starting from small hydrocarbon molecules plays a central role in the current transition towards renewable energy. However, the detailed mechanisms driving the growth of hydrocarbon chains remain to a large extent unknown. Here we investigated the formation of hydrocarbon chains resulting from acetylene polymerization on a Ni(111) model catalyst surface. Exploiting X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy up to near-ambient pressures, the intermediate species and reaction products have been identified. Complementary in situ scanning tunneling microscopy observations shed light onto the C−C coupling mechanism. While the step edges of the metal catalyst are commonly assumed to be the active sites for the C−C coupling, we showed that the polymerization occurs instead on the flat terraces of the metallic surface.
