  • Facilitating Distribution Grid Network Simulation Through Automated Common Information Model Data Conversion
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE PowerTech Conference 2015, Eindhoven (Netherlands), 29 June - 2 July 2015. - : IEEE. - 9781479976935
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In R&D projects as well as in development work, simulations of grid configurations and control methods are acommon tool for assessing different technical options. At thesame time, these simulations are often limited by difficulties indata exchange, simply due to the fact that systems are notcompatible and data format in operational systems is not alignedwith data in simulation and analysis tools. To this extent a toolhas been developed that allows large scale import of real-worldgrid data using CIM XML to state of the art simulation toolsbased on MATLAB. The tool is used in a large FP7 projectinvolving leading European DSOs.

  • Modeling and Control for Islanding Operation of Active Distribution Systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Modeling and Control of Sustainable Power Systems. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642229039 - 9783642229046 ; , s. 83-125
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Along with the increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG) in distribution systems, there are more resources for system operators to improve the operation and control of the whole system and enhance the reliability of electricity supply to customers. The distribution systems with DG are able to operate in islanding operation mode intentionally or unintentionally. In order to smooth the transition from grid connected operation to islanding operation for distribution systems with DG, a multi-agent based controller is proposed to utilize different resources in the distribution systems to stabilize the frequency. Different agents are defined to represent different resources in the distribution systems. A test platform with a real time digital simulator (RTDS), an OPen Connectivity (OPC) protocol server and the multi-agent based intelligent controller is established to test the proposed multi-agent based frequency controller. The modeling of different DG is discussed in details. Two distribution systems with DG are used to carry out case studies to illustrate the proposed multi-agent controller.

  • Coordinated control scheme of battery energy storage system (BESS) and distributed generations (DGs) for electric distribution grid operation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 4758-4764
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a coordinated control scheme of battery energy storage system (BESS) and distributed generations (DGs) for electric distribution grid operation. The BESS is designed to stabilize frequency and voltages as a primary control after the electric distribution system enters into the islanding operation mode, while the centralized joint load frequency control (CJLFC) utilizing DGs handles the secondary frequency regulation. The BESS with the associated controllers has been modelled in Real-time digital simulator (RTDS) in order to identify the improvement of the frequency and voltage response. The modified IEEE 9-bus system, which is comprised of several DG units, wind power plant and the BESS, has been employed to illustrate the performance of the proposed coordinated flexible control scheme using RTDS in order to verify its practical efficacy.

  • Multi-agent based controller for islanding operation of active distribution networks with distributed generation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: DRPT 2011. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781457703645 ; , s. 803-810
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing amount of distributed generation (DG) in today's highly complex restructured power networks gives more options for distributionsystem operators (DSOs) under contingency conditions. A low voltagedistribution network with a large amount of DG can be operated as an islanded system if the distribution system is disconnected from the main grid due to the contingency. The control and management of the islandeddistribution system are important, and the overall network synchronism must be maintained in the islanded distribution system. In this paper, a multi-agentbased controller is proposed to stabilize the frequency and voltages of anactive distribution system after it enters into the islanding operation mode. The modified IEEE 9-bus system was used to illustrate the dynamic and steady state performance of the active distribution system during islanding operationwith the proposed multi-agent based controller. Case studies have been carried out using the RealTime Digital Simulator (RTDS). Case study results show that the proposed multi-agent controller can efficiently help stabilize the frequency and voltages of active distribution systems after switching toislanding operation.

  • Multiagent-Based Distribution AutomationSolution for Self-Healing Grids
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. - 0278-0046 .- 1557-9948. ; 62:4, s. 2620-2628
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multiagent-based distribution automationsolution is proposed to be used in the distribution of selfhealinggrids to solve the service restoration part of theFault Location, Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR)task. The solution reduces the grid topology to an undirectedweighted graph and executes a distributed implementationof Prim’s minimum spanning tree algorithm tosolve the problem. The solution is compliant with state-ofthe-art standards within smart grids, including but not limitedto IEC61850. To test the performance of the algorithm,a testbed is assembled consisting of a physical dc gridmodel and several Arduino microcontrollers and RaspberryPi computers. The test results show that the proposedalgorithm can handle complex FLISR scenarios.

  • Ancillary services for smart grids : Power quality markets
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 202013 IEEE Grenoble Conference PowerTech. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467356695
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper addresses the roles and models of ancillary services in future Smart grids. Realization of future Smart grids is enabled by a transition from present day mainly hierarchical and regulated power systems to open market based flexible Smart grids. This transition involves new stakeholders and market opportunities related to primary and ancillary services. We suggest Service Level Agreements (SLAs) as a mechanism to coordinate and monitor primary and ancillary services and stakeholders in s given use/business case. We illustrate our approach with use cases based on Power Quality (PQ) markets with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) or established PQ indices as coordination and negotiation mechanisms between producers and users of power. Some of our use cases are chosen from the ongoing EU project Grid4EU.

  • A conceptual study of systems architecture for decentralised topology inference of distribution networks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 22nd International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2013). - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 9781849197328 ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Power system operation and control relies heavily on models for decision making. Determining the topology of electrical distribution networks is a critical part of producing these models and maintaining up-to-date topologies is a resource consuming and challenging task. This paper provides a conceptual study of a methodology and supporting system architecture for real time inference of electrical topology using process and model data from IEC 61850 compliant substation automation devices .The conceptual study aims to provide a discussion of the performance and scalability of such systems based on an analysis scenario. The decentralized topology inference system concept forms the basis for future work in operation and management of active distribution networks accommodating larger integration of distributed energy sources of intermittent nature.
