    • Measuring lifetimes of excited nuclear states can give important information on the internal structure of the nucleus. This thesis is based on two experiments performed in Italy and in the USA in order to deduce the lifetimes of excited states in 165Lu and 107Cd. The lifetimes were measured using the Recoil Distance Method and the reduced transition probabilities between states have been calculated from the lifetimes in a model independent way. In the analysis of the data from the experiment on 165Lu, the shape of the nucleus is investigated using a collective rotational model to describe the observed excited states. A possibility of a triaxial shape of this nucleus is discussed. In the second experiment the obtained reduced transition probabilities for the nucleus 107Cd are compared to theoretical predictions for vibrational and rotational excitation modes

    • An unified shell model scheme is introduced that evaluates simultaneously the contributions of bound single-particle states, Gamow resonances and antibound states to processes occurring in the continuum part of nuclear spectra. This new scheme allows us to study the effect of the antibound pole and the remaining part of the complex continuum separately. The calculations, performed in the complex energy plane, are applied to the study of weakly bound nuclei. The influence of antibound states upon physical quantities in light as well as in heavy nuclei is assessed.

    • We investigate the two-neutron transfer modes induced by (t,p) reactions in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. The nuclear response to the pair transfer is calculated in the framework of continuum quasiparticle random phase approximation (cQRPA). The cQRPA allows a consistent determination of the residual interaction and an exact treatment of the continuum coupling. The (t,p) cross sections are calculated within the distorted wave Born approximation approach and the form factors are evaluated by different methods: macroscopically, following the Bayman and Kallio method, and fully microscopically. A significant part of the cross section corresponds to a high-lying collective mode built entirely upon continuum quasiparticle states.
