  • On the origins of data envelopment analysis
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Productivity Analysis. - 0895-562X .- 1573-0441. ; 17:1-2, s. 23-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept "Data Envelopment Analysis" (DEA) was introduced in the journal literature by the highly influential 1978 paper of Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes. In the subsequent literature the development of research leading up to this paper tended to be forgotten. However, studying this diffusion of ideas may give valuable insights into research issues still unexplored and insight in the research process itself. A natural starting point is Farrell's seminal 1957 paper on concepts of efficiency and their computation. The richness of ideas presented in Farrell is demonstrated by the fact that the developments in the following two decades were based on aspects and ideas there. The origins of the main developments are identified, and the connections to Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes are explored.

  • Utveckling och spridning av forskning: fallet effektivitetsforskning
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent availability of electronically accessible database of journal articles makes studies of the diffusion of papers through citations possible. Citation peaks have been found to be typically five to seven years, with a long tailing off. A seminal paper on theoretical and applied efficiency analysis followed quite another diffusion pattern.

  • Artikelpublicering - vad säger amerikanska databaser?
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Ekonomisk Debatt. - 0345-2646. ; 25:3, s. 155-160

  • Language and Scientific Publication Statistics
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Language Problems and Language Planning. - 0272-2690. ; 28:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of contributions to scientific journals by authors from various OECD countries in 1998-2000 according to the commonly used ISI databases SSCI, A&HCI, and SCI Expanded is in focus. The number of contributions per million inhabitants is related to the main language of the country, the gross domestic product per capita and whether a country is a former socialist country or not. The social sciences, the arts and humanities, and the natural sciences are studied separately. It turns out that there is a tendency for a higher publication rate for English-language countries, slightly lower for countries with small languages, and even smaller for countries with large non-English languages. This is consistent with the hypotheses that there is a bias in the data bases from the ISI such that English-language journals tend to be overrepresented, that scholars from English-language countries write almost exclusively in English, and that scholars from other countries tend to publish less in English and more in their domestic language the larger is their domestic language. This calls for caution in using these databases for international comparisons of research activity.
