  • Value Destruction in Information Technology Ecosystems : A Mixed-Method Investigation with Interpretive Case Study and Analytical Modeling
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Information Systems Research. - : Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). - 1047-7047 .- 1526-5536. ; 34:2, s. 508-531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many of today’s software systems are created by leveraging ecosystems consisting of heterogeneous “complementors” and “hub” firms. In fact, the reliance on ecosystems is prevalent in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) domain, where larger ERP vendors form collaborative relationships with smaller industry-specific vendors to co-create value for themselves and their customers. However, value creation and destruction processes are often intertwined. A key motivation for this study is to shed light on the behavioral contingencies and underlying mechanisms that might lead to value destruction over time instead of the initially intended value co-creation. Furthermore, although value co-creation in collaborative relationships associated with ecosystems is often highlighted, research has been scarce on offering an in-depth analysis of the challenges in these relationships that can destroy value. This study attempts to address this issue by uncovering the underlying mechanisms that lead a hub firm and its complementors toward value destruction. Our mixed-methods approach involves the use of a combination of interpretive case study and analytical modeling to highlight nuances and develop conceptual propositions about the conditions that can potentially lead to value destruction. Our context is a globally reputed information technology (IT) firm known for providing business solutions (SOFTCo, a pseudonym) and numerous relatively small, less powerful customer-facing service firms (PartnerCos, a pseudonym). Our findings show that opportunism, unjust appropriation of rents, shirking, exploitation of asymmetric power, and undue dependence can initiate a value destruction process. Furthermore, our study revealed an unexpected emergence of a “pack of wolves,” where resentful PartnerCos formed a collective to tackle the opportunistic behaviors of SOFTCo by starting to align with its competitor, further destroying value for SOFTCo’s ecosystem. Overall, this study contributes to the literature on value co-creation/destruction in IT ecosystems. It also offers an illustration of a mixed-methods study where seemingly incommensurable approaches are harnessed to develop a theoretical understanding.

  • Navigating Work and Life Boundaries: Insights for Distributed Knowledge Professionals
  • 2021
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • As organizations continue to adapt and evolve to meet the challenges related to globalization and working with new collaboration technologies to bridge time and space, demands on employees’ time and attention continue to increase. Recognizing this problem and its implications, such as increased employee turnover, many companies are seeking ways to help their employees maintain a healthy balance between work and life. This book examines work-life conflict, i.e., the increasing lack of employees’ work-life balance, in the context of virtual teams and distributed work. It explores the negative impact on work-life conflict exacerbated by working across time zones, cultures, and geographical spaces. Further, it investigates specific causes of work-life conflict in distributed work environments. For researchers and practitioners in the HRM and OB domains, this book adds to the body of knowledge on work-life conflict, with a unique focus on the role of technology.

  • MISQ's DEI initiatives : A continuing journey
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Learned Publishing. - : Wiley. - 0953-1513 .- 1741-4857. ; 36:1, s. 48-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MIS Quarterly's (MISQ's) mission is to help develop, publish, and promote the finest scholarship within the IS academic community, and to do so without discrimination and bias. To address the above, MISQ's Editor-in-Chief and DEI Director published a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) position statement with an accompanying MISQ Editorial in 2021. MISQ decided to direct its DEI efforts equally towards ‘scholars’ (e.g., authors, reviewers) and the ‘scholarship’ (e.g., topics we study and approaches we take). Formation of a DEI workgroup was an early effort aimed at ensuring that the DEI-related practices are developed and implemented through a collective voice. A year-long mentoring programme including paper and career development sessions was designed to help scholars who had been inequitably affected by the pandemic. Initiatives such as flexible accommodation for board members and mentorship track for authors from disadvantaged groups/regions are being designed.

  • Insights for next generation undergraduate IS curriculum developers
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Information Systems Education Conference, ISECON 2020. - 2167-1435. ; 2020-March, s. 71-82
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents analyses on the trends of IS curriculum development that has evolved since its inception from the classical report by the AIS/ACM task force led by Heikki Topi and colleagues published in 2010. Based on an integrated synthesis of the literature, we categorize it into three theoretically-driven dimensions: (i) IS Curricula; (ii) Topic-Based IS Curricula, and (iii) IS Identity Crisis, followed by the identification of four empirically-driven contingencies: (i) Dangers of Legacy; (ii) Resource Competence; (iii) Technological Availability; and (iv) Trend Sensitivity. The paper presents IS curriculum development recommendations specifically driven by the four identified contingencies. Our findings inform how we design and re-design IS curricula. This in turn can influence the way we cross-fertilize with other disciplines forming a consolidated IS education that can offer the right competence to our future graduates, and will likely trigger more attention on information systems across the industry.

  • Reframing the Discourse on Work-Life Balance in the Digital Age
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Information Systems, ICIS 2023 : "Rising like a Phoenix: Emerging from the Pandemic and Reshaping Human Endeavors with Digital Technologies" - "Rising like a Phoenix: Emerging from the Pandemic and Reshaping Human Endeavors with Digital Technologies". - 9781713893622
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reframes our understanding of the discourse on work-life balance (WLB) from a global perspective, where life on the four income levels (from bottom of the wealth to top of the wealth) is equally considered. Based on a systematic literature review, our initial insights are that WLB of workers in the highest economic sectors has received significant attention from scholars and practitioners in the west, while the global rest and those in other economic sectors, which represents the majority of the world’s population, has almost entirely been overlooked. We argue for a new understanding of WLB that addresses the needs of all people across the globe, regardless of their economic status or geographic position, and independent of their formal or informal work contexts. In our future work, we aim to address how disparities in: (1) agency and dependence; (2) privacy and exposure; (3) connection and disconnection; and (4) formality and informality can affect people's dignity, equality, and healthy environments.

  • Toward a unified model of information security policy compliance : A conceptual replication study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: AIS Transactions on Replication Research. - 2473-3458. ; 7:2, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Moody et al. (2018) presented a unified model of information security policy compliance (UMISPC) to explain information systems security (ISS) behaviors. The model was empirically tested against 3 main types of security-related behavior: USB practices, not locking computers appropriately, and password issues. In this study, we present a conceptual replication of Moody et al. (2018) in order to provide stronger empirical support. To this end, our study has empirically examined UMISPC through three types of ISS behaviors within a work environment in the European Union (EU), where General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is in force. The replication of the empirical study with the three scenarios is original. While the replication in general highlights the strength of UMISPC, the results also indicate some differences from the original study and show that there is still room for improving some of its theoretical concepts.

  • Ghost in the machine : theorizing data knowledge in the age of intelligent technologies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Rising like a phoenix. - : AIS eLibrary. - 9781713893622 ; , s. 1-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AI technologies have led to new ways of thinking about data, knowledge, and organizations. Despite the arguments that data speak for themselves, the era of datafication demands revisiting data and knowledge and reflecting on new ways of theorizing. Considering that working with data is important for most employees, there is a need to investigate how the knowing of data can be achieved. In this paper, we move beyond the factual view of data and the hierarchical view of data and knowledge, to introduce data knowledge as a new type of knowledge. We present a first step towards a theory of explanation of what is data knowledge in today ́s organizations. To investigate this, we apply an etymological lens, and review systematically the IS literature. Our preliminary findings demonstrate unveiling data, balancing between intuition and data, acknowledging external and internal capabilities, and realizing data, as the four main concepts of data knowledge.

  • Practicing What We Preach? Reflections on More Sustainable and Responsible IS Research and Teaching Practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 51:1, s. 557-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on IS solutions for environmental sustainability have evolved to a modest, but firm body of knowledge. Despite this progressive understanding about the potential of IS in enabling environmental sustainability, our academic practices seem widely unaffected by these insights. The way we do research or conduct teaching is rarely influenced by sustainability considerations. For example, before the pandemic many of us belonged to a hypermobile group that travelled 5-6 times more than the average employee. Our research is also often not aligned with environmental goals. We research digital technologies without sufficiently acknowledging the significant amounts of resources they consume. Similarly, our teaching often focuses on the effective development and use of information systems; however, rebound, second order, or spillover effects are barely covered. Based on these observations we raise the question: Are we practicing enough of what we preach? While recognizing several efforts of IS researchers, we can no longer ignore the ‘environmental elephant in the room’. In our panel report, we discuss the status-quo and ideas to improve the environmental and societal impact of our academic practices and present three ideas to move forward: Leverage virtualization and limit air travel, overhaul teaching curricula, and recalibrate incentives and evaluation regimes.
