  • Integrating Syrian refugee children in Turkey : The role of Turkish language skills (A case study in Gaziantep)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Educational Research Open. - : Elsevier BV. - 2666-3740. ; 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study discusses issues around the integration of Syrian refugee children into the Turkish school system by using the case study of a secondary school in the city of Gaziantep in the southeast of Turkey. Based on focus groups with teachers at the school who engage with the growing number of Syrian refugee children in their classrooms, this study highlights in particular the role of Turkish language skills in ensuring the integration of Syrian children in the Turkish educational system. The data obtained from the teachers illustrate the significant challenges they face given the lacking Turkish language competency of Syrian students. The study presents the solutions suggested by the teachers at the secondary school and their assessment of the success of the Promoting Integration of Syrian Children into the Turkish Education System (PICTES) (2016–2018) which was implemented to address the specific educational needs of Syrian refugee children. Using Paolo Freire's concept of the pedagogy of the oppressed as theoretical framework, the paper argues that while enhancing Turkish language competency is crucial, it will not be effective as long as the intervention programmes primarily focus on language. Such programmes also need to consider the emotional well-being and mental health of Syrian refugee children, who suffer from the repercussions of the traumatic experiences caused by civil war and displacement, and provide avenues for integrating their perspectives in the classroom and in the wider school community.

  • Contesting ritual practices in Twelver Shiism : modernism, sectarianism and the politics of self-flagellation (taṭbīr)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1353-0194 .- 1469-3542. ; 50:5, s. 1067-1090
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shiis perform a number of rituals on the first 10 days of the Islamic month of Muḥarram to mourn the killing of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Husayn, in Karbala in southern Iraq in 680CE. Among the most controversial rituals is the practice of blood-letting self-flagellation (taṭbīr). This article provides a comprehensive discussion of debates around this ritual among prominent Shii clerical figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. While the vast majority of senior clerics is either sympathetic to taṭbīr or retains an indifferent attitude, clerical interventions critical of it are informed by the discursive parameters of Islamic modernism and emphasize the universal moral and socio-political message of Husayn’s revolt. These debates also point at concerns over inter-sectarian relations between Sunnis and Shiis and efforts to discard Shii ritual practices that could antagonize Sunni Muslims. Finally, these debates contain an important political dimension reflecting contestations around Iran’s aim to exercise hegemony over Shii communities across the world. The 1994 fatwa by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic ‘Ali Khamenei (b. 1939) in which he declared taṭbīr prohibited (ḥarām) has hardened existing cleavages between those supporting and those rejecting this practice, as this article illustrates.

  • Creating Shia Spaces in British Society : The Role of Transnational Twelver Shia Networks in North-West London
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: British Muslims and Their Discourses. - 9783031450129 - 9783031450136 ; , s. 101-120
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scholarship addressing Shia Muslim minorities in Western contexts often refers to them as a ‘minority within a minority’ or ‘the other within the other,’ highlighting their dual-marginalization within non-Muslim societies. This paper challenges the concept of double-marginalization by examining the dynamics of transnational Shia communal spaces in north-west London and the creation of Shia spaces through local networks and organizations. While being perceived as ‘the other within other’ emphasizes their marginalization, it also presents opportunities within the discourse of post-9/11 securitization of Islam, distinguishing between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ Muslims. This discourse, focused on militant Sunni expressions, allows Twelver Shia Muslims to position themselves as ‘moderate’ Muslims targeted by the same radical forces responsible for global terrorism. Using transnational Twelver Shia networks in London’s Brent borough as a case study, this article explores the agency of these networks across different spatial scales—local, national, and transnational—while also creating a ‘utopian’ space of Shia religious imagination that transcends physical boundaries. In conclusion, the concept of ‘complex diasporas’ is employed to understand the social heterogeneity, coexistence of discourses, and dual orientation of diasporic communities. The Twelver Shia networks in Brent exemplify multi-spatial and multi-temporal diasporic formations, engaging locally, nationally, and transnationally. These networks interact with the local environment, connect with clerical authorities in the Middle East, engage in diasporic politics, and create a global Shia unity, illustrating their simultaneous ethnic-parochial and cosmopolitan nature.

  • Muhammad 'Abduh : Modern Islam and the Culture of Ambiguity
  • 2022
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How to approach the complex intellectual legacy of a modern Muslim thinker like Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905)? This book offers an answer to this question by providing a new complete intellectual biography of him. It delineates ‘Abduh’s formation as a reformer and activist and embeds his varied intellectual contributions in a culture of ambiguity which has marked the intellectual life of Muslim societies throughout their history.By using new sources – in particular his early mystical, philosophical and political writings – and including recent academic contributions on him, the book explores ‘Abduh’s complex intellectual formation, the various religious, philosophical and cultural influences that shaped him, and his changing attitudes towards “Western modernity” and its colonial manifestation in the 19th century. Oliver Scharbrodt challenges the perception in academic scholarship - and among Muslim reformers of the 20th century - that searched for intellectual coherence and biographical consistency in ‘Abduh’s life. Instead, this book offers a new more comprehensive reading of his intellectual legacy and highlights the variety of approaches and ideas manifest in his contributions.
