  • Ingår i: Sin, Suffering, and the Problem of Evil. - 9783161575389 - 9783161575396 ; 126, s. 319-344
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the ways the dynamics of sin, good, andevil may be understood in a technological future characterized by the implementation of artificial intelligence in society. By re-reading the Eden story inGenesis 2–3 in light of current AI-discourse, Scheuer shows how sin, good, andevil are intrinsic to the enterprise of creating an entity that bears the essence ofthe Creator, while at the same time being fundamentally different from theCreator.

  • Animal names for Hebrew Bible female prophets
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Literature and Theology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0269-1205 .- 1477-4623. ; 31:4, s. 455-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the literary and ideological dimensions of zoomorphic names for Deborah (bee) and Huldah (weasel)-two of the Hebrew Bible female prophets. The two women stand out among the female protagonists of the Hebrew Bible in three ways: they are the only female prophets endowed with textual legacy, they are remarkably successful in roles usually reserved for men, and they are the only women named after unclean animals. In this article, I argue that biblical authors use animal names to enhance the characterisation of the two women and to foreshadow the outcome of their narratives. Perceived as a bee, Deborah emerges as a triumphant weapon of war launched against the enemies of her people. Perceived as a weasel, Huldah appears as masterful in finding ways to solve intricate situations. At the same time, the use of names of unclean animals works to undermine the achievements and capacity of the two women, thereby consolidating the divide between male and female roles. Zoomorphic names of unclean animals suggest that although imaginable, and sometimes indispensable, female leadership is essentially extraordinary and must be viewed with suspicion.

  • Bees, Wasps, and Weasels : Zoomorphic Slurs and the Delegitimation of Deborah and Huldah in the Babylonian Talmud
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this book, Blaženka Scheuer explores the zoomorphic content of Zibburta (bee/wasp) and Karkušta (weasel)—demeaning names given by R. Naḥman of b. Meg 14b to Deborah and Huldah, two distinguished prophets of the Hebrew Bible. Looking closely at relevant texts, she explores ancient beliefs about bees, wasps, and weasels, recounting a variety of key literary and visual motifs that highlight the different attributes of these animals. Scheuer demonstrates the multiple ways in which zoomorphic images were used as interpretative keys both in the formation of Deborah and Huldah stories in the Hebrew Bible and in their subsequent versions. In a constant process of interaction with their cultural contexts, such zoomorphism represents an attempt to define the rabbinic beliefs about the role of women in Jewish tradition but also about the nature of God. Scheuer argues that the symbolic association of bees and weasels with asexual conception and birth also made the zoomorphic slurs about Deborah and Huldah effective as an argument against the doctrine of virgin birth in early Christianity. Emphasizing the foundational process of constant negotiation of traditions and textual interpretations, Scheuer exposes the culturally rich and religiously competitive world in which the biblical texts were transmitted.
