  • To which world regions does the valence-dominance model of social perception apply?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Human Behaviour. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2397-3374. ; 5:1, s. 159-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution. • The quasars 1038+528 A and B
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - Les Ulis : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 142:1, s. 71-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results of VLBI observations of the quasars 1038 + 528 A and B at 2.8, 3.6, 13, and 18 cm at various times between November 1979 and March 1981 are reported. The observations and data calibration are described, as are the mapping and astrometric techniques applied in the study. Both quasars are found to have 'core-jet' morphologies. The core of the A quasar dominates its morphology at centrimetric wavelengths with the brightness temperature of its 400 pc long jet being about 1/100 that of the core. By contrast, the 'jet' in the B quasar is very short (about 70 pc); the tail of this jet has the steepest spectral index found to date in extragalactic compact sources, indicating that high electron losses are responsible for the shortness of the jet. No evidence for appreciable morphological change in the B quasar was found over the time span of the study, whereas a new feature may be emerging from the A quasar core at superluminal speed.

  • Production and electromagnetic decay of hyperons : a feasibility study with HADES as a phase-0 experiment at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A feasibility study has been performed in order to investigate the performance of the HADES detector to measure the electromagnetic decays of the hyperon resonances Sigma(1385)(0), Lambda(1405) and Lambda(1520) as well as the production of double strange baryon systems Xi(-) and Lambda Lambda in p + p reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 4.5GeV. The existing HADES detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. Afterwards the expected signal count rates using a target consisting of either liquid hydrogen or polyethylene are summarized.

  • Disparities in treatment and outcome of kidney replacement therapy in children with comorbidities: an ESPN/ERA Registry study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Clinical Kidney Journal. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2048-8505 .- 2048-8513. ; 16:4, s. 745-755
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Data on comorbidities in children on kidney replacement therapy (KRT) are scarce. Considering their high relevance for prognosis and treatment, this study aims to analyse the prevalence and implications of comorbidities in European children on KRT. Methods We included data from patients <20 years of age when commencing KRT from 2007 to 2017 from 22 European countries within the European Society of Paediatric Nephrology/European Renal Association Registry. Differences between patients with and without comorbidities in access to kidney transplantation (KT) and patient and graft survival were estimated using Cox regression. Results Comorbidities were present in 33% of the 4127 children commencing KRT and the prevalence has steadily increased by 5% annually since 2007. Comorbidities were most frequent in high-income countries (43% versus 24% in low-income countries and 33% in middle-income countries). Patients with comorbidities had a lower access to transplantation {adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.67 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.61-0.74]} and a higher risk of death [aHR 1.79 (95% CI 1.38-2.32)]. The increased mortality was only seen in dialysis patients [aHR 1.60 (95% CI 1.21-2.13)], and not after KT. For both outcomes, the impact of comorbidities was stronger in low-income countries. Graft survival was not affected by the presence of comorbidities [aHR for 5-year graft failure 1.18 (95% CI 0.84-1.65)]. Conclusions Comorbidities have become more frequent in children on KRT and reduce their access to transplantation and survival, especially when remaining on dialysis. KT should be considered as an option in all paediatric KRT patients and efforts should be made to identify modifiable barriers to KT for children with comorbidities. Lay Summary Kidney transplantation (KT) is considered the optimal treatment for children who suffer from permanent kidney failure, because it leads to a lower mortality and higher quality of life compared with dialysis. Children on dialysis frequently suffer from diseases of other organs (comorbidities) that can directly lower their life expectancy and could potentially represent a barrier for transplantation, posing an additional disease burden for these children. In this study we looked at data from a large multinational registry for children with kidney failure who require kidney replacement. Using these data, we studied whether these children suffered from comorbidities and whether these impact their life expectancy or their access to KT. We found that more and more children with kidney failure suffer from comorbidities when starting kidney replacement therapy. We also found that these children have a lower access to KT and a higher mortality on dialysis compared with children without comorbidities, especially in low-income countries. After KT, children with comorbidities have a similar mortality and graft survival compared with children without comorbidities. We concluded that reduced access to a kidney transplant might represent a modifiable barrier to KT in children with comorbidities, especially in low-resource countries. We suggest that children with comorbidities in need for kidney replacement therapy should be rapidly evaluated for eligibility for KT.

    • Artificial olfaction  was introduced  as a model tool  to investigateolfaction  properties  [1]. Nonetheless,   the  only  analogy  between the natural and the artificial system lies just in the selectivity proper- ties of the receptors. The implementation of more sophisticated fea- tures such as the large number of receptors and the glomerular layer have been hampered  by technical difficulties related to the manage- ment of large numbers  of simultaneous  signals. As demonstrated in the past, optical imaging is a read-out  tech- nique for sensors development that can provide large sensor arrays [2]. On that basis, we recently introduced  an artificial olfaction sys- tem based on the imaging of a continuous layer of chemical indi- cators [3]. In this situation an image sensor provides a segmentation of the whole sensing layer in a number  of elementary  units corre- sponding to the pixels of the image. Eventually, since it is possible to evaluate the optical properties of every single pixel, each pixel of the image may correspond to an individual sensor. In this regard, even low-resolution  images may easily result in thousands of independ- ent sensing units. In our system a collection of arbitrarily shaped regions of color indicators  is illuminated  by a controlled  light source;  the optical characteristics  of each pixel of the image are measured by a camera yielding the light intensities in the three channels  red, green, and blue.   The  combination  of  illumination   sequence  and   cameraread-out  results  in  a  fingerprint  encoding  the  optical  properties of the sensing layer portioned in image pixels. Even a simple clas- sification of these fingerprints assigns each pixel to a class, and each class contains pixels carrying the same color indicator.  This behav- ior resembles the association between ORNs carrying the same chemical receptors into the same glomerulus [4]. On the basis of this analogy it is straightforward to describe the layer of indicators as an artificial epithelium, pixels of the image as artificial olfactory  neu- rons, and the classes provided  by the classifier as an abstract  rep- resentation of artificial glomeruli. This system thus allows the generation of a complex model of olfaction,  including  glomerular  compartmentalization [5], which is then applied to data generated by the exposure to pure and mixed gases. Results show that such a model enhances the discrimination of pure and mixed odors. Eventually,  such a platform,  apart  from evidencing the similarities between natural and artificial olfactory systems, is also proposed as a practical tool to test olfactory models.1. K.
