  • Dissecting unique and common variance across body and brain health indicators using age prediction
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Human Brain Mapping. - : WILEY. - 1065-9471 .- 1097-0193. ; 45:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ageing is a heterogeneous multisystem process involving different rates of decline in physiological integrity across biological systems. The current study dissects the unique and common variance across body and brain health indicators and parses inter-individual heterogeneity in the multisystem ageing process. Using machine-learning regression models on the UK Biobank data set (N = 32,593, age range 44.6-82.3, mean age 64.1 years), we first estimated tissue-specific brain age for white and gray matter based on diffusion and T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, respectively. Next, bodily health traits, including cardiometabolic, anthropometric, and body composition measures of adipose and muscle tissue from bioimpedance and body MRI, were combined to predict 'body age'. The results showed that the body age model demonstrated comparable age prediction accuracy to models trained solely on brain MRI data. The correlation between body age and brain age predictions was 0.62 for the T1 and 0.64 for the diffusion-based model, indicating a degree of unique variance in brain and bodily ageing processes. Bayesian multilevel modelling carried out to quantify the associations between health traits and predicted age discrepancies showed that higher systolic blood pressure and higher muscle-fat infiltration were related to older-appearing body age compared to brain age. Conversely, higher hand-grip strength and muscle volume were related to a younger-appearing body age. Our findings corroborate the common notion of a close connection between somatic and brain health. However, they also suggest that health traits may differentially influence age predictions beyond what is captured by the brain imaging data, potentially contributing to heterogeneous ageing rates across biological systems and individuals. A 'body age' model trained on health traits demonstrated comparable age prediction accuracy to models trained solely on brain MRI data. Health traits may differentially influence age predictions beyond what is captured by the brain imaging data, revealing a degree of unique variance in brain and bodily ageing processes. image

  • NeuLAND: The high-resolution neutron time-of-flight spectrometer for R 3 B at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 1014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NeuLAND (New Large-Area Neutron Detector) is the next-generation neutron detector for the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research). NeuLAND detects neutrons with energies from 100 to 1000 MeV, featuring a high detection efficiency, a high spatial and time resolution, and a large multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency. This is achieved by a highly granular design of organic scintillators: 3000 individual submodules with a size of 5 × 5 × 250 cm3 are arranged in 30 double planes with 100 submodules each, providing an active area of 250 × 250 cm2 and a total depth of 3 m. The spatial resolution due to the granularity together with a time resolution of σt≤ 150 ps ensures high-resolution capabilities. In conjunction with calorimetric properties, a multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency of 50% to 70% for four-neutron events will be achieved, depending on both the emission scenario and the boundary conditions allowed for the reconstruction method. We present in this paper the final design of the detector as well as results from test measurements and simulations on which this design is based.

  • Towards Improving Software Architecture Degradation Mitigation by Machine Learning
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mitigating software architecture degradation is a task in evolving large and complex software-intensive systems that is as important as it is challenging. One aspect adding to the complexity of the task is the amount of information in the implementations of most real-world systems to be digested in order to detect, analyse, and remedy degradation. In domains with similar challenges, machine learning techniques have been applied in recent years and partially delivered exciting results. Hence the question arises whether, and to which degree, machine learning can be successfully applied to tackle software architecture degradation. In this paper, we propose a novel combination of existing techniques for different phases of the task of mitigating software architecture degradation from detecting it to repairing it. We outline how these techniques could be complemented by machine learning to increase their accuracy and efficiency over time

  • Border of the island of inversion: Unbound states in Ne-29
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 105:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleus Ne-29 is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder f(7/2) state, which would place Ne-29 firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of Ne-29 is reported. The states were populated in Ne-30(p, pn) and Na-30(p, 2p) reactions at a beam energy of around 230 MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing assignments for the observed states. The lowest lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant l = 3 component, giving first evidence for f(7/2) single particle strength in Ne-29. The excitation energies and strengths of the observed states are compared to shell-model calculations using the SDPF-U-MIX interaction.

  • First observation of 28 O
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 620:7976, s. 965-970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Subjecting a physical system to extreme conditions is one of the means often used to obtain a better understanding and deeper insight into its organization and structure. In the case of the atomic nucleus, one such approach is to investigate isotopes that have very different neutron-to-proton (N/Z) ratios than in stable nuclei. Light, neutron-rich isotopes exhibit the most asymmetric N/Z ratios and those lying beyond the limits of binding, which undergo spontaneous neutron emission and exist only as very short-lived resonances (about 10−21s), provide the most stringent tests of modern nuclear-structure theories. Here we report on the first observation of 28O and 27O through their decay into 24O and four and three neutrons, respectively. The 28O nucleus is of particular interest as, with the Z = 8 and N = 20 magic numbers1,2, it is expected in the standard shell-model picture of nuclear structure to be one of a relatively small number of so-called ‘doubly magic’ nuclei. Both 27O and 28O were found to exist as narrow, low-lying resonances and their decay energies are compared here to the results of sophisticated theoretical modelling, including a large-scale shell-model calculation and a newly developed statistical approach. In both cases, the underlying nuclear interactions were derived from effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. Finally, it is shown that the cross-section for the production of 28O from a 29F beam is consistent with it not exhibiting a closed N = 20 shell structure.

  • Metalworking exposures and persistent skin symptoms in the ECRHS II and SAPALDIA 2 cohorts
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Contact Dermatitis. - : Wiley. - 0105-1873 .- 1600-0536. ; 60:5, s. 256-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Diseases of the skin are important and often preventable conditions occurring among workers with dermal exposures to irritant and sensitizing agents. OBJECTIVE: We conducted this analysis to assess the associations between metalworking exposures and current and persistent skin symptoms among male and female participants in two population-based epidemiologic studies. METHODS: We pooled data from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey II (ECRHS II) and the Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung and Heart Disease in Adults 2 (SAPALDIA 2), two prospective cohort studies in Europe. Each participant completed interviewer-administered questionnaires to provide information about symptoms and exposures related to selected occupations, including metalworking, during the follow-up periods. We assessed associations between skin symptoms and the frequency of metalworking exposures among 676 ECRHS II/SAPALDIA 2 respondents. RESULTS: Current skin symptoms were reported by 10% of metalworkers and were associated with frequent use, defined as four or more days per week, of oil-based metalworking fluids [prevalence ratio (PR): 1.76, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.25-2.49)] and organic solvent/degreasing agents (PR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.21-3.50). CONCLUSIONS: Skin symptom prevalence is associated with increasing frequency of oil-based metalworking fluid and degreasing agent use. Our findings justify assessing strategies for reducing the frequency of metal-related exposures.

  • Carotid plaque-RADS : a novel stroke risk classification system
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JACC Cardiovascular Imaging. - : Elsevier. - 1936-878X .- 1876-7591. ; 17:1, s. 62-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Carotid artery atherosclerosis is highly prevalent in the general population and is a well-established risk factor for acute ischemic stroke. Although the morphological characteristics of vulnerable plaques are well recognized, there is a lack of consensus in reporting and interpreting carotid plaque features. Objectives: The aim of this document is to establish a consistent and comprehensive approach for imaging and reporting carotid plaque by introducing the Plaque–Reporting and Data System (RADS) score. Methods: A panel of experts recognized the necessity to develop a classification system for carotid plaque and its defining characteristics. Using a multimodality analysis approach, the Plaque-RADS categories were established through consensus, drawing on existing published reports. Results: The authors present a universal classification that is applicable to both researchers and clinicians. The Plaque-RADS score offers a morphological assessment in addition to the prevailing quantitative parameter of “stenosis.” The Plaque-RADS score spans from grade 1 (indicating complete absence of plaque) to grade 4 (representing complicated plaque). Accompanying visual examples are included to facilitate a clear understanding of the Plaque-RADS categories. Conclusions: Plaque-RADS is a standardized and reliable system of reporting carotid plaque composition and morphology via different imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. This scoring system has the potential to help in the precise identification of patients who may benefit from exclusive medical intervention and those who require alternative treatments, thereby enhancing patient care. A standardized lexicon and structured reporting promise to enhance communication between radiologists, referring clinicians, and scientists.
