  • Fast-track surgery: procedure-specific aspects and future direction.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1435-2451 .- 1435-2443.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Fast-track (FT) surgery can be defined as a coordinated perioperative approach aimed at reducing surgical stress and facilitating postoperative recovery. The objective of this review was to examine the literature on the procedure-specific application of FT surgery. DISCUSSION: The concept of FT rehabilitation has been applied mainly in colorectal surgery, but positive data have appeared also in other areas such as orthopedic, hepatopancreaticobiliary, urological, upper gastrointestinal, gynecological, thoracic, vascular, endocrine, breast, and pediatric surgeries. There is very little experience with comprehensive FT programs in cardiac surgery or trauma. Quantitative analysis from randomized trials and cohort studies suggest that FT is effective in reducing hospital stay without increased adverse events. Other benefits of the FT approach include a reduction in complications, ileus, fatigue, pain, and hospital expenses. However, despite clear benefits of FT care, implementation in daily practice has been slow. Further efforts must be undertaken to secure implementation in routine clinical practice. Standardized FT protocols should be provided on a procedure-specific basis.

  • Acceptance of near-natural greenspace management relates to ecological and socio-cultural assigned values among European urbanites
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Basic and Applied Ecology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1439-1791 .- 1618-0089. ; 50, s. 119-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grasslands are widespread elements of urban greenspace providing recreational, psychological and aesthetic benefits to city residents. Two urban grassland types of contrasting management dominate urban greenspaces: frequently mown, species-poor short-cut lawns and less intensively managed, near-natural tall-grass meadows. The higher conservation value of tall-grass meadows makes management interventions such as converting short-cut lawns into tall-grass meadows a promising tool for urban biodiversity conservation. The societal success of such interventions, however, depends on identifying the values urban residents assign to different types of urban grasslands, and how these values translate to attitudes towards greenspace management. Using 2027 questionnaires across 19 European cities, we identify the assigned values that correlate with people's personal greenspace use and their preferences for different types of urban grasslands to determine how these values relate to the agreement with a scenario of converting 50% of their cities' short-cut lawns into tall-grass meadows. We found that most people assigned nature-related values, such as wildness, to tall-grass meadows and utility-related values, such as recreation, to short-cut lawns. Positive value associations of wildness and species richness with tall-grass meadows, and social and nature related greenspace activities, positively correlated with agreeing to convert short-cut lawns into tall-grass meadows. Conversely, disapproval of lawn conversion correlated with positive value associations of cleanliness and recreation potential with short-cut lawns. Here, people using greenspaces for nature-related activities were outstandingly positive about lawn conversion. The results show that the plurality of values assigned to different types of urban grasslands should be considered in urban greenspace planning. For example, tall-grass meadows could be managed to also accommodate the values associated with short-cut lawns, such as tidiness and recreation potential, to support their societal acceptance.

  • Structural biology studies of thylakoid lumen proteins required for photosystem II assembly and function
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Little is known about the structures and functions of thylakoid lumen proteins. However, some of these proteins have an essential role in photosynthesis. Photosystem II (PSII) complexes are embedded in the thylakoid membrane of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms and one of the central subunits, the D1 protein, is damaged by light during the light driven water – splitting reaction and must be replaced frequently. One of the thylakoid lumen proteins that is essential for assembly and renewal of PSII complexes is the High Chlorophyll Fluorescence 136 (HCF136) protein. Another important protein for the PSII complex assembly is the Low PSII Accumulation Protein 19 (LPA19). Both proteins, HCF136 and LPA19, were shown to bind to the core subunits of the PSII complex from the lumenal side and LPA19 has been shown to explicitly interact with the soluble C-terminus of the D1 protein, one of the core PSII complex proteins. Prior to the replacement of the damaged D1 protein, the PSII complex needs to be disassembled, which is done with the help of the Maintenance of Photosystem II under High light 2 (MPH2) protein. MPH2, also called TL16, is required during the repair cycle of the PSII complex particularly under increased and fluctuating light conditions. In this work I have determined the three-dimensional X-ray structures of the HCF136 protein at 1.6 Å resolution and the LPA19 protein at 1.2 Å resolution and have also biochemically analyzed possible interactions of HCF136 with the C-termini of D1 protein. In addition, we have determined the NMR structure of the MPH2 protein. The protein structures of HCF136, LPA19, and MPH2 determined from A. thaliana provide us with a starting point for further studies to improve our understanding of their functional roles in the assembly, maintenance, disassembly and renewal of the PSII complex. The structures are revealing the molecular details that are particularly important during the design of mutations to study protein-protein interactions and the binding of co-factors.Furthermore, I have contributed to the characterization of AnPrx6, the 1-Cyx peroxiredoxin from Anabaena sp. 7120. Peroxiredoxins are important caretakers of reactive oxygen species and a homolog PrxQ in A.thaliana is found in the thylakoid lumen. The dimeric AnPrx6 protein revealed different active site residues conformations in each of the dimers, which is probably coupled to its enzymatic activity. Unexpectedly, the protein acted also as a chaperone and showed chaperone activity in its dimeric state, which is a novelty for Prx proteins.

  • Characterization of Long Multi-Mode Fiber Links using Digital Holography
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Optics InfoBase Conference Papers. - 2162-2701. ; Part F160-OFC 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose to use digital holography to characterize long multi-mode fiber links. A four segment 26.5km fiber span supporting 45 spatial modes is analyzed, showing the evolution of both mode-dependent loss and cross talk.

  • Field Trial of FPGA-Based Real-Time Sensing Transceiver over 524km of Live Aerial Fiber
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optical Fiber Communication Conference, OFC 2023. - 9781957171180
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform fiber sensing over a 524 km live network using a real-time coherent transceiver prototype. Polarization and length changes from the link consisting exclusively of aerial fiber wound around high-voltage power cables are continuously monitored.
