  • RIS-enabled smart wireless environments: deployment scenarios, network architecture, bandwidth and area of influence
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Eurasip Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. - 1687-1499 .- 1687-1472. ; 2023:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) constitute the key enabler for programmable electromagnetic propagation environments and are lately being considered as a candidate physical-layer technology for the demanding connectivity, reliability, localisation, and sustainability requirements of next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we first present the deployment scenarios for RIS-enabled smart wireless environments that have been recently designed within the ongoing European Union Horizon 2020 RISE-6G project, as well as a network architecture integrating RISs with existing standardised interfaces. We identify various RIS deployment strategies and sketch the core architectural requirements in terms of RIS control and signalling, depending on the RIS hardware architectures and respective capabilities. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss, with the aid of simulations and reflect array measurements, two novel metrics that emerge in the context of RIS-empowered wireless systems: the RIS bandwidth of influence and the RIS area of influence. Their extensive investigation corroborates the need for careful deployment and planning of the RIS technology in future wireless networks.

    • Compared to its previous generations, the 5th generation (5G) cellular network features an additional type of densification, i.e., a large number of active antennas per access point (AP) can be deployed. This technique is known as massive multipleinput multiple-output (mMIMO) [1]. Meanwhile, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) evolution, e.g., in channel state information (CSI) enhancement, and also on the study of a larger number of orthogonal demodulation reference signal (DMRS) ports for MU-MIMO, was one of the Release 18 of 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP Rel-18) work item. This release (3GPP Rel-18) package approval, in the fourth quarter of 2021, marked the start of the 5G Advanced evolution in 3GPP. The other items in 3GPP Rel-18 are to study and add functionality in the areas of network energy savings, coverage, mobility support, multicast broadcast services, and positioning

  • Leveraging Ris-Enabled Smart Signal Propagation for Solving Infeasible Localization Problems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine. - 1556-6080 .- 1556-6072. ; 18:2, s. 20-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have tremendous potential for both communication and localization. While communication benefits are now well understood, the breakthrough nature of the technology may well lie in its capability to provide and support localization capabilities. We present an overview of RIS-enabled localization scenarios, considering various numbers of RISs, single- or multi-antenna base stations, narrowband or wideband transmissions, and near- and far-field operations. Based on this overview, we also highlight key research directions and open challenges specific to RIS-enabled localization and sensing.

  • RIS-aided Localization under Pixel Failures
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - 1558-2248 .- 1536-1276. ; In press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) hold great potential as one of the key technological enablers for beyond-5G wireless networks, improving localization and communication performance under line-of-sight (LoS) blockage conditions. However, hardware imperfections might cause RIS elements to become faulty, a problem referred to as pixel failures, which can constitute a major showstopper especially for localization. In this paper, we investigate the problem of RIS-aided localization of a user equipment (UE) under LoS blockage in the presence of RIS pixel failures, considering the challenging single-input single-output (SISO) scenario. We first explore the impact of such failures on accuracy through misspecified Cramer-Rao bound (MCRB) analysis, which reveals severe performance loss with even a small percentage of pixel failures. To remedy this issue, we develop two strategies for joint localization and failure diagnosis (JLFD) to detect failing pixels while simultaneously locating the UE with high accuracy. The first strategy relies on l_1-regularization through exploitation of failure sparsity. The second strategy detects the failures one-by-one by solving a multiple hypothesis testing problem at each iteration, successively enhancing localization and diagnosis accuracy. Simulation results show significant performance improvements of the proposed JLFD algorithms over the conventional failure-agnostic benchmark, enabling successful recovery of failure-induced performance degradations.

  • Reconfigurable, Intelligent, and Sustainable Wireless Environments for 6G Smart Connectivity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Magazine. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 59:10, s. 99-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Various visions of the forthcoming sixth generation (6G) networks point toward flexible connect-and-compute technologies to support future innovative services and the corresponding use cases. 6G should be able to accommodate ever evolving and heterogeneous applications, future regulations, and diverse user-, service-, and location-based requirements. A key element toward building smart and energy sustainable wireless systems beyond 5G is the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which offers programmable control and shaping of the wireless propagation environment. Capitalizing on this technology potential, in this article we introduce two new concepts: i) wireless environment as a service, which leverages a novel RIS-empowered networking paradigm to trade off diverse, and usually conflicting, connectivity objectives; and ii) performance-boosted areas enabled by RIS-based connectivity, representing competing service provisioning areas that are highly spatially and temporally focused. We discuss the key technological enablers and research challenges with the proposed networking paradigm, and highlight the potential profound role of RISs in the recent Open Radio Access Network architecture.

  • Wireless environment as a service enabled by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces: The RISE-6G perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 Joint European Conference on Networks and Communications and 6G Summit, EuCNC/6G Summit 2021. ; , s. 562-567
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design of 6th Generation (6G) wireless networks points towards flexible connect-and-compute technologies capable to support innovative services and use cases. Targeting the 2030 horizon, 6G networks are poised to pave the way for sustainable human-centered smart societies and vertical industries, such that wireless networks will be transformed into a distributed smart connectivity infrastructure, where new terminal types are embedded in the daily environment. In this context, the RISE-6G project aims at investigating innovative solutions that capitalize on the latest advances in the emerging technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), which offers dynamic and goal-oriented radio wave propagation control, enabling the concept of the wireless environment as a service. The project will focus on: i) the realistic modeling of RIS-assisted signal propagation, ii) the investigation of the fundamental limits of RIS-empowered wireless communications and sensing, and iii) the design of efficient algorithms for orchestrating networking RISs, in order to implement intelligent, sustainable, and dynamically programmable wireless environments enabling diverse services that go well beyond the 5G capabilities. RISE-6G will offer two unprecedented proof-of-concepts for realizing controlled wireless environments in near-future use cases.
