  • The energization and radiation in geospace (ERG) project
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Dynamics of The Earth's Radiation Belts and Inner Magnetosphere. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 9780875904894 ; , s. 103-116
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Energization and Radiation in Geospace (ERG) project for solar cycle 24 will explore how relativistic electrons in the radiation belts are generated during space storms. This geospace exploration project consists of three research teams: the ERG satellite observation team, the ground-based network observation team, and the integrated data analysis/simulation team. Satellite observation will provide in situ measurements of features such as the plasma distribution function, electric and magnetic fields, and plasma waves, whereas remote sensing by ground-based observations using, for example, HF radars, magnetometers, optical instruments, and radio wave receivers will provide the global state of the geospace. Various kinds of data will be integrated and compared with numerical simulations for quantitative understanding. Such a synergetic approach is essential for comprehensive understanding of relativistic electron generation/loss processes through crossenergy and cross-regional coupling in which different plasma populations and regions are dynamically coupled with each other. In addition, the ERG satellite will utilize a new and innovative measurement technique for wave-particle interactions that can directly measure the energy exchange process between particles and plasma waves. In this paper, we briefly review some of the profound problems regarding relativistic electron accelerations and losses that will be solved by the ERG project, and we provide an overview of the project.

  • Thermo-responsive emission induced by different delocalized excited-states in isomorphous Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) one-dimensional chains
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: CHEMICAL SCIENCE. - 2041-6520 .- 2041-6539.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The self-assembly of d8 transition metal complexes is essential for the development of optoelectronic and sensing materials with superior photofunctional properties. However, detailed insight into the electronic delocalization of excited states across multiple molecules, particularly in comparing 5d8 (Pt(ii)) and 4d8 (Pd(ii)) systems, remains ambiguous but important. In this study, we have successfully evaluated the differences in the excited-state delocalization and thermal responses of self-assembled Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) complexes. Although the complexes presented herein, K[M(CN)(2)(dFppy)]H2O (M = Pt or Pd, dFppy = 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinate), are crystallographically isomorphous with similarly short metal & ctdot;metal contacts, only the Pt(ii) complex exhibited thermal equilibria between delocalized excited states, resulting in a drastic thermochromic luminescence with a red-shift of greater than 100 nm. In contrast, the dimeric localized emission from the Pd(ii) complex showed a significant increase in the quantum yield upon cooling, approaching almost unity.

  • Two ABC transport systems carry out peptide uptake in Enterococcus faecalis : Their roles in growth and in uptake of sex pheromones
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Molecular Microbiology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0950-382X .- 1365-2958. ; 116:2, s. 459-469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Enterococcal pheromone-inducible plasmids encode a predicted OppA-family secreted lipoprotein. In the case of plasmid pCF10, the protein is PrgZ, which enhances the mating response to cCF10 pheromone. OppA proteins generally function with associated OppBCDF ABC transporters to import peptides. In this study, we analyzed the potential interactions of PrgZ with two host-encoded Opp transporters using two pheromone-inducible fluorescent reporter constructs. Based on our results, we propose renaming these loci opp1 (OG1RF_10634-10639) and opp2 (OG1RF_12366-12370). We also examined the ability of the Opp1 and Opp2 systems to mediate import in the absence of PrgZ. Cells expressing PrgZ were able to import pheromone if either opp1 or opp2 was functional, but not if both opp loci were disrupted. In the absence of PrgZ, pheromone import was dependent on a functional opp2 system, including opp2A. Comparative structural analysis of the peptide-binding pockets of PrgZ, Opp1A, Opp2A, and the related Lactococcus lactis OppA protein, suggested that the robust pheromone-binding ability of PrgZ relates to a nearly optimal fit of the hydrophobic peptide, whereas binding ability of Opp2A likely results from a more open, promiscuous peptide-binding pocket similar to L. lactis OppA.

  • Liquid-crystalline dye-sensitized solar cells : Design of two-dimensional molecular assemblies for efficient ion transport and thermal stability
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chemistry of Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0897-4756 .- 1520-5002. ; 28:18, s. 6493-6500
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanostructured liquid-crystalline (LC) electrolytes have been developed for efficient and stable quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Two types of ionic LC assemblies for electrolytes have been designed: (i) noncovalent assemblies of two-component mixtures consisting of I2-doped imidazolium ionic liquids and carbonate-terminated mesogenic compounds (noncovalent type) and (ii) single-component mesogenic compounds covalently bonding an imidazolium moiety doped with I2 (covalent type). These mesogenic compounds are designed with flexible oligooxyethylene spacers connecting the mesogenic and the polar moieties. The oligooxyethylene-based material design inhibits crystallization and leads to enhanced ion transport as compared to alkyl-linked analogues due to the higher flexibility of the oligooxyethylene spacer. The noncovalent type mixtures exhibit a more than 10 times higher I3- diffusion coefficient compared to the covalent type assemblies. DSSCs containing the noncovalent type liquid crystals show power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 5.8 ± 0.2% at 30 °C and 0.9 ± 0.1% at 120 °C. In contrast, solar cells containing the covalent type electrolytes show significant increase in PCE up to 2.4 ± 0.1% at 120 °C and show superior performance to the noncovalent type-based devices at temperature above 90 °C. Furthermore, the LC-DSSCs exhibit excellent long-term stability over 1000 h. These novel electrolyte designs open unexplored paths for the development of DSSCs capable of efficient conversion of light to electricity in a wide range of temperatures.

  • Slalom encodes an adenosine 3'-phosphate 5'-phosphosulfate transporter essential for development in Drosophila.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: EMBO Journal. - : Wiley. - 1460-2075. ; 22:14, s. 3635-3644
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sulfation of all macromolecules entering the secretory pathway in higher organisms occurs in the Golgi and requires the high-energy sulfate donor adenosine 3'-phosphate 5'-phosphosulfate. Here we report the first molecular identification of a gene that encodes a transmembrane protein required to transport adenosine 3'-phosphate 5'-phosphosulfate from the cytosol into the Golgi lumen. Mutations in this gene, which we call slalom, display defects in Wg and Hh signaling, which are likely due to the lack of sulfation of glycos aminoglycans by the sulfotransferase sulfateless. Analysis of mosaic mutant ovaries shows that sll function is also essential for dorsal–ventral axis determination, suggesting that sll transports the sulfate donor required for sulfotransferase activity of the dorsal–ventral determinant pipe.
