  • Internet addiction and sleep quality among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic : A multinational cross-sectional survey
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science. - 1932-6203. ; 16:11 November
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of many people, including medical students. The present study explored internet addiction and changes in sleep patterns among medical students during the pandemic and assessed the relationship between them. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out in seven countries, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Guyana, India, Mexico, Pakistan, and Sudan, using a convenience sampling technique, an online survey comprising demographic details, information regarding COVID-19, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Results In total, 2749 participants completed the questionnaire. Of the total, 67.6% scored above 30 in the IAT, suggesting the presence of an Internet addiction, and 73.5% scored equal and above 5 in the PSQI, suggesting poor sleep quality. Internet addiction was found to be significant predictors of poor sleep quality, causing 13.2% of the variance in poor sleep quality. Participants who reported COVID-19 related symptoms had disturbed sleep and higher internet addiction levels when compared with those who did not. Participants who reported a diagnosis of COVID-19 reported poor sleep quality. Those living with a COVID-19 diagnosed patient reported higher internet addiction and worse sleep quality compared with those who did not have any COVID-19 patients in their surroundings. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that internet addiction and poor sleep quality are two issues that require addressing amongst medical students. Medical training institutions should do their best to minimize their negative impact, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Detection of dusty plasma near the E-ring of Saturn
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 57:14-15, s. 1795-1806
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present several independent in-situ measurements, which provide evidence that charged dust in the E-ring interacts collectively with the dense surrounding plasma disk of Saturn, i.e., form a system of dust-plasma interaction. The results are based on data sampled by the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) investigation onboard Cassini, which allows for interferometry of plasma density inhomogeneities (delta n/n) with two antenna elements and a Langmuir probe sensor. The interferometer experiment detects two ion populations: one co-rotating with the planetary magnetic field and another moving with near Keplerian speed around Saturn. The full range of RPWS measurements indicates that the Keplerian population consists of colder ions (T-i

  • Dusty plasma in the vicinity of Enceladus
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present in situ Cassini Radio Plasma Wave Science observations in the vicinity of Enceladus and in the E ring of Saturn that indicate the presence of dusty plasma. The four flybys of Enceladus in 2008 revealed the following cold plasma characteristics: (1) there is a large plasma density (both ions and electrons) within the Enceladus plume region, (2) no plasma wake effect behind Enceladus was detected, (3) electron densities are generally much lower than the ion densities in the E ring (n(e)/n(i) < 0.5) as well as in the plume (n(e)/n(i) < 0.01), and (4) the average bulk ion drift speed is significantly less than the corotation speed and is instead close to the Keplerian speed. These signatures result from half or more of the electrons being attached to dust grains and by the interaction between the surrounding cold plasma and the predominantly negatively charged submicrometer-sized dust grains. The dust and plasma properties estimated from the observations clearly show that the dust-plasma interaction is collective. This strong dust-plasma coupling appears not only in the Enceladus plume but also in the Enceladus torus, typically from about 20 R(E) (similar to 5000 km) north and about 60 R(E) (similar to 15,000 km) south of Enceladus. We also suggest that the dust-plasma interaction in the E ring is the cause of the planetary spin-modulated dynamics of Saturn's magnetosphere at large.

  • In Vivo Toxicity Assessment of the Probiotic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HTI-19 Isolated from Stingless Bee (Heterotrigona itama) Honey
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - 2072-6643. ; 15:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study evaluated the acute and sub-acute toxicity of B. amyloliquefaciens HTI-19 (isolated from stingless bee honey) in female Sprague Dawley rats. In an acute toxicity study, the rats received a low dosage (1 x 109 CFU center dot mL 1), medium dosage (3 x 10(9) CFU center dot mL(-1)), or high dosage (1 x 10(10) CFU center dot mL(-1)) of B. amyloliquefaciens HTI-19 daily orally by syringe-feeding for 14 days. For the subacute toxicity study, rats received a low dosage (1 x 10(9) CFU center dot mL(-1)) or a high dosage (1 x 10(10) CFU center dot mL(-1)) for 28 days. The probiotic feeding in acute and sub-acute toxicity studies showed no mortality or significant abnormalities in rats throughout the experimental period. In week 2 of the acute study, the body weight of the rats showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) compared to the control. By gross and microscopic examination of organs, no evidently significant changes were observed in the morphology of organs. Serum biochemical tests and blood hematology tests also revealed no treatment-related changes. Overall, these data indicated that oral administration of B. amyloliquefaciens HTI-19 up to 1 x 10(9) CFU center dot mL(-1) for 28 days can be considered safe.

  • Wake potential of a test charge using the stationary phase method
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The linear response of a dusty (complex) plasma to a moving test charge can be determined using an appropriate plasma dielectric function and a three dimensional Fourier analysis. Many analytical results have been found for a slowly moving test charge. For intermediate and large velocities numerical methods of integration are commonly used. However general asymptotic results valid at large distances can be found, using a combination of the residue calculus applied to the zeroes of the dielectric function and the method of stationary phase for integration over a wave vector component. The method can be expressed in terms of conditions on the group and phase velocity of waves in the reference frame of the moving test charge. In particular for a given radial direction the asymptotic response is determined by wave vectors for which the group velocity is directed radially outwards. The analysis is close to that due to Kelvin for ship waves in deep water. An essential difference is that in the present case three spatial dimensions are involved instead of only two, and also that the dispersion relation for plasma waves is more complicated.
