  • Big data from the cloud to the edge : The aggregate computing solution
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: PervasiveHealth. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Publications. - 9781450371421 ; , s. 177-182
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We advocate a novel concept of dependable intelligent edge systems (DIES) i.e., the edge systems ensuring a high degree of dependability (e.g., security, safety, and robustness) and autonomy because of their applications in critical domains. Building DIES entail a paradigm shift in architectures for acquiring, storing, and processing potentially large amounts of complex data: data management is placed at the edge between the data sources and local processing entities, with loose coupling to storage and processing services located in the cloud. As such, the literal definition of edge and intelligence is adopted, i.e., the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills is shifted towards the edge of the network, outside the cloud infrastructure. This paradigm shift offers flexibility, auto configuration, and auto diagnosis, but also introduces novel challenges. © 2019 ACM.

  • Machine Learning-Assisted Performance Assurance
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the growing involvement of software systems in our life, assurance of performance, as an important quality characteristic, rises to prominence for the success of software products. Performance testing, preservation, and improvement all contribute to the realization of performance assurance. Common approaches to tackle challenges in testing, preservation, and improvement of performance mainly involve techniques relying on performance models or using system models or source code. Although modeling provides a deep insight into the system behavior, drawing a well-detailed model is challenging. On the other hand, those artifacts such as models and source code might not be available all the time. These issues are the motivations for using model-free machine learning techniques such as model-free reinforcement learning to address the related challenges in performance assurance.Reinforcement learning implies that if the optimal policy (way) for achieving the intended objective in a performance assurance process could instead be learnt by the acting system (e.g., the tester system), then the intended objective could be accomplished without advanced performance models. Furthermore, the learnt policy could later be reused in similar situations, which leads to efficiency improvement by saving computation time while reducing the dependency on the models and source code.In this thesis, our research goal is to develop adaptive and efficient performance assurance techniques meeting the intended objectives without access to models and source code. We propose three model-free learning-based approaches to tackle the challenges; efficient generation of performance test cases, runtime performance (response time) preservation, and performance improvement in terms of makespan (completion time) reduction. We demonstrate the efficiency and adaptivity of our approaches based on experimental evaluations conducted on the research prototype tools, i.e. simulation environments that we developed or tailored for our problems, in different application areas.

  • Robustness-Driven Hybrid Descriptor for Noise-Deterrent Texture Classification
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 2169-3536. ; 7, s. 110116-110127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A robustness-driven hybrid descriptor (RDHD) for noise-deterrent texture classification is presented in this paper. This paper offers the ability to categorize a variety of textures under challenging image acquisition conditions. An image is initially resolved into its low-frequency components by applying wavelet decomposition. The resulting low-frequency components are further processed for feature extraction using completed joint-scale local binary patterns (CJLBP). Moreover, a second feature set is obtained by computing the low order derivatives of the original sample. The evaluated feature sets are integrated to get a final feature vector representation. The texture-discriminating performance of the hybrid descriptor is analyzed using renowned datasets: Outex original, Outex extended, and KTH-TIPS. The experimental results demonstrate a stable and robust performance of the descriptor under a variety of noisy conditions. An accuracy of 95.86%, 32.52%, and 88.74% at noise variance of 0.025 is achieved for the given datasets, respectively. A comparison between performance parameters of the proposed paper with its parent descriptors and recently published paper is also presented.

    • Two triazine based Ultra Violet (UV) absorbers Sulfuric acid mono-(2-{4-[4-chloro-6-(4-{4-chloro-6-[4-(2-sulfooxy-ethanesulfonyl)-phenylamino]-[1,3,5] triazin-2-ylamino-phenylamino)-[1,3,5]triazin-2-ylamino]-benzenesulfonyl}-ethyl) ester (1a) and 4-{4-chloro-6-[4-(2-sulfooxy-ethanesulfonyl)-phenylamino]-[1,3,5] triazin-2-ylamino}-2-[4-chloro-6-(2-sulfooxy-ethanesulfonyl)-[1,3,5]triazin-2-ylamino]-benzenesulfonic acid (2a) with different substituents were designed computationally. The influence of different substituents on the electrochemical properties and UV spectra of the absorbers was investigated. The presence of electron deficient unit in 1a to the molecular core significantly reduces the LUMO levels and energy gap. The designed absorbers were synthesized via condensation reaction and characterized by UV–Vis, FT-IR, MS studies. The performance of synthesized compounds as UV absorbers and their fastness properties were assessed by finishing the cotton fabric through exhaust method at different concentration and results appeared in good range.

  • Orientation Independent Chipless RFID Tag Using Novel Trefoil Resonators
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 2169-3536. ; 7, s. 122398-122407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a compact and fully passive bit encoding circuit, capable of operating as a chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is presented. The structure consists of novel concentric trefoil-shaped slot resonators realized using Rogers RT/duroid (R) 5880 laminate, occupying a physical footprint of 13.55 x 13.55 mm(2). Each resonating element is associated with a particular data bit, having a 1:1 resonator-to-bit correspondence. Bit sequences are configured through introducing modifications in the geometric structure either by addition or exclusion of each nested slot resonator. Such changes manifest directly in the electromagnetic signature of the tag as presence or absence of corresponding resonant peaks. The proposed 10-bit tag offers minimized inter-resonator mutual coupling and insensitivity to changes in polarization and incident angles thereby demonstrating orientation independent functionality. Moreover, error-free encoding is achieved through stabilizing the shift in resonant frequencies for a variety of different geometric configurations and orientation of the structure. The tag operates within the license-free ultrawideband ranging from 5.4 to 10.4 GHz, providing spectral bit capacity and bit density of 2 bits/GHz and 5.44 bits/cm(2) respectively.

  • Texture Representation Through Overlapped Multi-Oriented Tri-Scale Local Binary Pattern
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 2169-3536. ; 7, s. 66668-66679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper ideates a novel texture descriptor that retains its classification accuracy under varying conditions of image orientation, scale, and illumination. The proposed Overlapped Multi-oriented Tri-scale Local Binary Pattern (OMTLBP) texture descriptor also remains insensitive to additive white Gaussian noise. The wavelet decomposition stage of the OMTLBP provides robustness to photometric variations, while the two subsequent stages - overlapped multi-oriented fusion and multi-scale fusion - provide resilience against geometric transformations within an image. Isolated encoding of constituent pixels along each scale in the joint histogram enables the proposed descriptor to capture both micro and macro structures within the texture. Performance of the OMTLBP is evaluated by classifying a variety of textured images belonging to Outex, KTH-TIPS, Brodatz, CUReT, and UIUC datasets. The experimental results validate the superiority of the proposed method in terms of classification accuracy when compared with the state-of-the-art texture descriptors for noisy images.

  • Revisiting the structural, electronic and photocatalytic properties of Ti and Zr based perovskites with meta-GGA functionals of DFT
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - UK : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7526 .- 2050-7534. ; 9:14, s. 4862-4876
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) functional of density functional theory (DFT) conforms to all possible exact constraints required of a meta-GGA functional and offers good approximations for structural and energetic properties of solids in comparison to experiments. However, SCAN is unable to fully overcome the underestimation of band gap for perovskite oxide materials suitable for photocatalysis. In the present work, we use a combination of meta-GGAs SCAN and modified Becke–Johnson local density approximation (mBJ-LDA) potential functional to accurately compute the structural, energetic, mechanical, vibrational and optoelectronic properties of Ti and Zr based ABO3 (A = Sr, Ba and B = Ti and Zr) perovskite oxides. In addition to evaluating their physical properties, the potential applications of these materials as photocatalyst operating in the UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum are also examined. We show that the structural, energetic, mechanical and vibrational properties calculated using SCAN are in better agreement with experimental data as compared to the commonly used semi-local functionals of DFT. However, the optoelectronic properties of the large band gap Ti and Zr based perovskite oxides are further improved if computed with the mBJ-LDA potential functional, whereby an even higher level of accuracy than with SCAN is achieved, with results that are comparable to the computationally expensive hybrid DFT functionals. On the whole, our DFT calculations indicate that a combination of SCAN and mBJ-LDA functionals for exploring the physical properties of large band gap perovskite oxides provide the means for identifying photocatalysts suitable for hydrogen production at low computational costs.
