  • Introduction : Mapping the field of masculinity studies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Routledge International Handbook of Masculinity Studies. - : Routledge. - 9781138056695 - 9781315165165 ; , s. 1-16
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last decades, masculinity studies has become a well-established part of interdisciplinary gender research. This introduction discusses three different narratives about the field: one that emphasizes its roots in social sciences, one that problematizes its relation to other feminist scholarship and one that highlights its influences from humanities scholarship. The chapter troubles these narratives and proposes masculinity studies as ‘minor literature’, which is not occupied with canon formation or certain theories but rather destabilizes linear narratives about the field and aims for less hierarchical ontologies and epistemologies. The chapter also introduces the chapters and their contribution to masculinity studies, including decentring of global Northern and Western knowledge, advancing transnational and intersectional approaches, and developing masculinity studies as a transdisciplinary field to meet contemporary challenges.

  • Men, Masculinities, and Peace, Justice, Conflict, and Violence : A Multi-level Overview
  • 2021. - 1
  • Ingår i: Routledge Handbook of Feminist Peace Research. - London : Routledge. - 9780367109844
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relations between men, masculinities and violence, peace, justice, and conflict are of clear importance, yet often remain unaddressed explicitly in analysis, policy, and practice. This chapter overviews the large body of feminist and critical literature on these multi-level connections. Violence, non-violence, peace, justice, conflict, and post-conflict are approached through the lens of Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities (CSMM), and in terms of theory, politics, policy, and practice. The chapter begins with an overview of CSMM as a body of scholarship informing theory, policy and practice interventions around violence, peace, justice, and conflict at interpersonal, communal, institutional, national, and transnational levels. The authors continue with an analysis of key contributions of CSMM in understanding the challenges and possibilities of peaceful, non-violent masculinities within different levels, while acknowledging intersections and overlaps between levels. It is contended that CSMM provide necessary hope and evidence that positive peace is achievable through the transformation toward more healthy, non-violent masculinities and gender relations.

  • Routledge International Handbook of Masculinity Studies
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Routledge International Handbook of Masculinity Studies provides a contemporary critical and scholarly overview of theorizing and research on masculinities as well as emerging ideas and areas of study that are likely to shape research and understanding of gender and men in the future. The forty-eight chapters of the handbook take an interdisciplinary approach to a range of topics on men and masculinities related to identity, sex, sexuality, culture, aesthetics, technology and pressing social issues. The handbook’s transnational lens acknowledges both the localities and global character of masculinity. A clear message in the book is the need for intersectional theorizing in dialogue with feminist, queer and sexuality studies in making sense of men and masculinities.Written in a clear and direct style, the handbook will appeal to students, teachers and researchers in the social sciences and humanities, as well as professionals, practitioners and activists.

  • Knowledge, Power and Young Sexualities : A Transnational Feminist Engagement
  • 2022. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book troubles the ways young people have been constructed as ‘trouble’ through critical readings of the effects and impacts, politically and ideologically, globally and locally, of scholarship and practice directed at South African young people’s sexualities over the last three decades of addressing HIV, GBV and other sexual and gender justice challenges.Located primarily in South Africa, the book speaks to global concerns about the politics of knowledge and transnational flows of information and practice with respect to gender and sexuality and is framed by global imperatives and analyses located in transnational, postcolonial and intersectional feminist frameworks. The key argument developed here, and explored in relation to several different forms of research and practice, is that efforts to challenge HIV, GBV and unequal sexual and gender practices among young people, particularly as evident in heterosexual relationships, have tended to reflect and reproduce (re)new(ed) orthodoxies about sexuality, gender, family and young people, while bolstering global and local racist, classist ‘othering’ of certain communities and nation-states, and reiterating the ‘innocence’ and authority of those already privileged and centred. The book contributes to critical reflexive work on global practices of knowledge and its complex enmeshment with power in the terrain of sexual and gender justice work aimed at young people.
