  • Design of a wideband multi-channel system for time reversal hyperthermia
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Hyperthermia. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0265-6736 .- 1464-5157. ; 28:2, s. 175-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To design and test a wideband multi-channel amplifier system for time reversal (TR) microwave hyperthermia, operating in the frequency range 300 MHz-1 GHz, enabling operation in both pulsed and continuous wave regimes. This is to experimentally verify that adaptation of the heating pattern with respect to tumour size can be realised by varying the operating frequency of the antennas and potentially by using Ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse sequences instead of pure harmonic signals. Materials and methods: The proposed system consists of 12 identical channels driven by a common reference signal. The power and phase settings are applied with resolutions of 0.1W and 0.1 degrees, respectively. Using a calibration procedure, the measured output characteristics of each channel are interpolated using polynomial functions, which are then implemented into a system software algorithm driving the system feedback loop. Results: The maximum output power capability of the system varies with frequency, between 90 and 135W with a relative power error of +/- 6%. A phase error in the order of +/- 4 degrees has been achieved within the entire frequency band. Conclusions: The developed amplifier system prototype is capable of accurate power and phase delivery, over the entire frequency band of the system. The output power of the present system allows for an experimental verification of a recently developed TR-method on phantoms or animals. The system is suitable for further development for head and neck tumours, breast or extremity applications.

  • Time-reversal system for microwave hyperthermia
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: EuCAP 2010 - The 4th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation. - 9788476534724 ; , s. Art. nr. 5505231-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hyperthermia is presently used as an adjuvant to the radiation therapy in the treatment of certain types of cancers. Recently, many randomised trials have shown a significant advantage of addition of hyperthermia combined with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy in the treatment of solid tumours. This paper presents the first experimental results obtained with a prototype of a new system for microwave hyperthermia based on time-reversal algorithm. The level of absorbed energy is strongly dependent on size of treated area through penetration depth of EM waves, thus selection of the frequency depends on treated area sizes as well as tumour volume. The system has thus been designed to work at broad frequency range.

  • The effect of ciprofloxacin injection on genetically absence prone (Wag/Rij) Rat's electroencephalogram characteristics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Basic and Clinical Neuroscience. - 2008-126X. ; 4:1, s. 31-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Ciprofloxacin which was used in this study is a Fluoroquinolone (FQ). This kind of drug may cause epileptic seizures probably because of the inhibition of GABA binding to its receptors. Wag/Rij rats (an animal model for generalized absence epilepsy), were used as experimental subjects. Methods: For EEG study, electrodes were inserted into the cortex of animals according to paxinos coordinates. After and before ciprofloxacin injection, EEG was recorded and their SWDs were compared with each others. Results: Findings showed a significant increase in the mean number of seizures during recording period. But the mean number of SWDs during seizures did not show any significant differences between groups. Discussion: These results may be due to involvement of GABA antagonistic effects of FQs and/or Mg2+ linked blockade of NMDA receptors. More researches are going to determine physiopathology of SWDs and find new effective substance against this kind of epilepsy.
